Excellent instruction. I teach beginning watercolor and always looking for better ways to explain-demonstrate the medium. I found this book very helpful to me and my student.

Very easy projects with simple steps. As a "nonartist,' I could create a lovely painting, with little frustration.

Very good book for the beginner. If there is a fault with the book it's that the author, or publisher, forgot to include adding the color yellow whenever a brown is being mixed. Other than that I'm pleased with the book so far.

My daughter (just turned 5) LOVES these books. She is so motivated to work on them. She wants to do page after page until she finishes the book. This is the third one I've bought her in the past month, and I can see I'm going to have to buy the next phonics for 1st grade (the one with the crab on the front cover). My daughter makes me sit down with her by the hour to read through the books and do the activities. Don't get me wrong, she is reading everything, including the directions, and completing the activities on her own, but she likes to make sure she's doing them correctly, so she likes me to be there to check her work. Then, she loves to put the starts on the completed pages at the end. This book is very motivating for my daughter and she has learned a lot from them.

My son likes working on this and he enjoys the activities in it.However, each page also lists the name of the items.you son has learned that he doesn't need to speak the words and listen. He can look at spelling and determine what rhymes.I was hoping I could challenge him by flipping to pages that do not have the pictures with word description.... but they all have the name of item :(

Bought several of this brand of workbook and they have been wonderful for my son. He was two when we started these and some of the harder ones he is doing now at 3. I plan to continue to buy this brand as it looks like some of them go up to 6th grade. They are cheap enough to where once he is done using them it isn't a problem to order a replacement. he really enjoys the gold stars they came with and having them applied to his completed pages.

Meh. I was excited to come across this book, but was a bit let down after reading several of the stories. The people featured in this book had lives that were anything but dull, so it's a shame for the book to be dull.When I read a Wikipedia entry on an individual person, living or dead, the "Personal Life" section is the one that's always most interesting to me. Rather than having the all-inclusivity of an encyclopedic collection of literally ever sideshow performer from year X to year X, with just niblets of information on each, I would have much preferred fewer "chapters" focused on more details on fewer individual lives. As other reviewers have already pointed out, you quickly become cross-eyed reading the life story of one "world's tallest person," followed back-to-back by the life story of another "world's tallest person," and have their stories be more or less the same time after time. It becomes mind-numbing and uninteresting after three or four of those.

This book is just what it says it is: an encyclopedia for sideshow freaks. I don't consider all the people in the book as "freaks." They are, however, different than the rest of us and the book very interestingly describes their deformities or differences, and tells a brief story of their lives, complete with birth and death dates, when available. I found it to be educational and extremely interesting. One of those books I couldn't put down! I grew up around a person who was born with extreme deformities, but that person was never in a sideshow, and he isn't in this book, of course. Because of living around that person (my dad's hired hand), I never discriminated against people who are "different" and I used to get very angry at people who stared at him. This book makes one realize that these people who are different have real lives, just like the rest of us.

Marc Hartzman has undertaken an ambitious project: a chronicle of those showfolks who performed in America's sideshows from circa 1830 to the present. Starting with the golden era under P.T. Barnum, Hartzman gives the reader brief biographical introductions to these unusual performers. Hartzman's prose offers a good humored look at the place where truth and hype converge in the lives of these human oddities. The text is accompanied by rare photographs from the author's and other collections (including that of yours truly).I find it gratifying that whereas most books focus on sideshow's illustrious (or dubious) past, Hartzman also takes time to acknowledge the contemporary performers and showmen keeping the tradition alive out there on the sawdust trail.The short, the tall, the fat, the tattooed, the conjoined, the hirsute, the limbless: they're all here to discover inside Hartzman's tent.

This book is informative, thorough and makes a lively read.Hartzman obviously has a lot of passion and affection for his subject. He has detailed the lives of many odd, strange and unique human beings in a refreshingly straight forward manner. He has a light touch and a wry sense of humor that pokes through from time to time. It is apparent that this was a labor of love and the author brings the book right up to date with a review of contemporary performers who are bringing various aspects of the sideshow to modern audiences. The book opens in the 'golden age' of the sideshow, from the 1830s, through the Barnum years up to the early 1900s. A time when the only way rural working people could be 'amazed and amused' was when the circus or the fair blew in to town. Hartzman documents some of the most famous performers and human exhibits of that period. He continues through the 'silver' age, around the end of WW1 through to the Vietnam era. And finishes with the 'modern' age. The three sections document nicely the rise, decline and subtle rebirth of this unique corner of American theater.In a world where reality TV rules supreme, it is gratifying to read a book that is dedicated to celebrating those who truly kept it and continue to keep it very real.Highly reccomended. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book, stop reading and order it.

This book was completely fascinating. Each story was so interesting. Great way to learn about the old American sideshows and the "freaks" who made them possible.

When one reads the thumbnail (few are any more detailed than this) biographies of several fat ladies, a pall of sameness settles over it all. Part of it comes from the subject: fat ladies tend to have very similar situations and experiences, as do dwarves, giants, conjoined twins, etc., and to read of several is inevitably to read pretty much the same story.This author enhances that experience by writing them mostly in the same words, very often cliched ones at that. His attempts at humor are pretty much at the level of nudge, nudge, wink, wink: if there is any sense of wonder here, it seems to hover around the sex lives of the subjects.Yes, he is sympathetic to these folks, and few thoughtful people could really argue with the proposition "what else are they going to do for a living?" (I was blown away by the earnings he reports--$100 a week back in the day when $1 could buy 10 pounds of hamburger! It was often a very good living indeed.) Sadly, the sideshow has become passe, and with it a way of life that gave strange people a community--obviously often a rich and supportive one.

I purchased this book as my daughter will be graduating from high school soon. I can only say that I wish I had had this book when I went to college! "Dean's List" isn't about how to study better or even how to get good grades -- it provides the foundation in developing a mature approach to learning that will serve the student their entire life. The book also outlines practical advice on navigating college administrations -- something I didn't figure out until Junior year. Perfect reading for the summer before entering college.

it's good, it helps you prepare but I thought it would be full of more tools to use as a student.

This is a very informative book with cute illustrations BUT I don’t love it. Why? Well the book has a letter of the alphabet and a dinosaur on each page. Great! The problem is that some pages have a character from the series as an additional example of the dinosaur and sometimes it is one of the ‘Pterodon Family’ members. This confuses the heck out of my 3 1/2 yo. He doesn’t understand why sometimes the picture is the the ’right’ dinosaur and sometimes not. Maybe not a big deal for an older kid who can already read?

My 3.5 year old LOVES Dinosaur Train on PBS. We save the most recent episodes on our TiVo and had to permanently save the 4 episodes that make up the Dinosaurs A to Z (Tiny's big idea!). My son has learned and remembered SO many dinosaur names from this show. He impresses everyone with his talk of the Pachycepholosaurus, for example. There is an adorable dinosaur A-Z song where they sing all the dino's names. It goes rather quickly, and with these long Dino names can be hard for the little ones to sing. As soon as I saw this book, I knew he had to have it. He now flips through it and follows the TV story at the same time. I've also seen him flipping through the book and singing the song to himself. Now, his 19 month old brother also reaches for this book often. Highly recommend as a companion to the show.

This book is great for dinosaur lovers. My 3 year old is obsessed with dinosaurs. We watch Dinosaur Train occasionally and he loves the song for these. The best part is they give you the breakdown on how to pronounce each dinosaur and the time period.

My young son loves this book. He appears to be on the Autism Spectrum and Dinosaur Train is something he loves dearly to the point that he can say all the letters and the full dinosaurs associated with it at 4 years old.

My five year old grandson now knows the names of all these dinosaurs no matter where he sees them. Which impresses people no end! Great book. :)

Great addition to grandkids' collection of dinosaur books! Reinforces lessons learned on the popular T.V. show: Dinosaur Train. I appreciate author's help with pronouncing each dinosaur's name correctly.

I love this book almost as much as I love the television show. It is a good size and sturdy enough for a rough toddler. I love all the information provided including pronunciation! None of our other dinosaur books provide the pronunciation which I feel is the most important part. They go above and beyond, but that's what I expected from PBS Kids. <3

My son loves all things dinosaur, and Dinosaur Train is no exception. At 7 years old, he can recognize and say almost all of the names of the dinosaurs in this book. We actually saw several we had never heard of before! It's thick and padded too, so it's easy to find on the bookshelf, and will last a long time compared to regular paper books.

The Cannabis Manifesto has taken a plethora of information about all aspects of cannabis from it's medical and social history to current science, and put it into one small, concise, and hugely informative easy to read book. Since first learning about Steve DeAngelo and Harborside Health Center in California, I have looked up to and admired him for his activism, his tenacity, and his unwavering dedication to bringing the truth about cannabis to the mainstream. I almost didn't get this book, but after reading what Johnny Green wrote about it, I decided to go ahead and buy it for my library. I am so glad I did and only wish I could buy a truckload of this book to pass out to everyone I know who is on the fence about trying cannabis medicine, and also to the sometimes offensive know-it-alls, like me. Thanks Steve. You have created a gem for cannabis newbies as well as cannabis veterans. This book has really helped me collect and organize my cannabis knowledge, and tossed in quite a few revelations as well. Great job!

Steve DeAngelo and I share more than just a first name; we share several decades of dedication to the idea marijuana should be legally available. So when I was asked to write a blog promoting Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (Feel the Bern!), I wrote one entitled Feel the Burn: The Marijuana Manifesto. Bernie is the only Presidential candidate to receive an “A” on the issue of marijuana legalization. However, when I vainly tried to Google my online article, up popped The Cannabis Manifesto by Steve DeAngelo. Humbled, I ordered his book, read it, and loved it.There are many good books about marijuana, but most authors try to deny their own personal experiences in order to “objectively” portray an “unbiased” examination of the issue. Not, Steve DeAngelo. What makes his book such compelling reading is his unapologetic personal approach to the issue. Steve openly tells of smoking pot as a teenager with a close black friend called Eddie. Both of them got caught and busted, but because Eddie was poor and black, while Steve was middle-class and white; Eddie’s education and career prospects were ruined, not Steve’s. “I was protected by white privilege as a teenager, so my early scrapes with the law left me relatively unscathed…but most low-income minority youth arrested for cannabis are locked out of education and employment.”There are many other books that give ample factual information about marijuana and its history. This book is also filled with facts. But Steve goes beyond dispensing information; he makes a passionate plea to end the social injustice of prohibition. Whereas others make the specious argument that marijuana should be legal because it isn’t as addictive or dangerous as alcohol or tobacco; DeAngelo makes a compelling argument that cannabis should be legal because it is healthy and increases well-being.Personally, I believe it doesn’t matter if a mood-altering drug is healthy or unhealthy, addicting or non-addicting, popular or unpopular. Prohibition of drugs, whether marijuana, alcohol, or whatever, only makes those drugs more dangerous and more addicting. DeAngelo makes this case brilliantly and calls for government regulation of marijuana to both protect the environment and make certain marijuana isn’t contaminated with toxic additives. Of course, as politicians learned during alcohol Prohibition, the government can’t regulate a substance to reduce risk, if the substance is illegal. Steve DeAngelo sums this idea up succinctly: “The dangers of the illicit market are the real threat--not cannabis itself.”Whereas my expertise is in the area of addiction, his expertise is in the area or medical marijuana. Although he distinguishes between “medical use” and “adult use,” (believing the word adult is more apropos than recreational,) he makes the cogent argument it often difficult to discern one from the other. Is smoking marijuana to relieve pain, medical use? If you said yes, is smoking marijuana to relieve the emotional pain of anxiety, medical use? It shouldn’t matter. But it does matter if you live in a state where only medical marijuana is legal, but recreational marijuana is not. Advocating medical marijuana without endorsing recreational marijuana is like saying gays should have equal rights, but can't marry. The only way to guarantee that anyone who needs marijuana for medical reasons can get it is to legalize marijuana for medical and non-medical use.We are at the tipping point. Although the author boldly proclaims, “Legalization cannot and will not be stopped,” this statement will only be true, if we make it true. Sitting around smoking weed and watching Bob’s Burgers will do nothing to legalize cannabis. Buying this book, reading it, and becoming a political activist can push cannabis legalization past the tipping point. A toke is useless without a vote.

This book changed how my husband looked as his own cannabis usage. He said that he realized that he was using cannabis primarily for relaxation and pain control rather than intoxication.The book reframes how we should have conversations about the legalization of cannabis. It clearly breaks it into separate pieces - among these how cannabis should never have been made illegal, as well as demanding that non-users stop considering this a moral issue. It is important that this issue no longer be important, but become a simple fact of every day life for anyone who chooses to benefit. Kudos to Steve Deangelo for doing what he's been doing all these years, for bringing this material together in such a clear, calm and intelligent way, and most of all for sticking his neck out as he continues to do.
