The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Project was named to be misleading. It was evidently hoped that those who did recognize that word "auroral" would accept the idea that the University of Alaska is studying the aurora borealis. Begich and Manning do not approach this topic as speculation about who may be behind the dubious activities behind the fence, but they do point out that HAARP is part of a global cooperative effort. The facility in Alaska is not the only ionospheric heater on the planet. So it's bigger than weapons development by the US military alone. It is also copiously documented that official sources have repeatedly lied to the public about exactly what is going on. They write about the HAARP facility's ability to: generate earthquakes, modify the weather, control people's minds, map the Earth's interior, generate ultra-powerful laser like power beams, transmit wireless power, and more. Sure, these technologies can be used benevolently, but when they are in the hands of our military, the emphasis is on killing people and breaking stuff. We're concerned that these technologies are being used against the American people."Angels Don't Play this HAARP" is a great example of good old American muckraking journalism from a very capable duo.

If my understanding is correct, this book or at least the information contained, has been available for the last 20 years.Yet, I have never heard it mentioned.It is high time that the American people read this information and contact their congressional representatives to find out if any adult iin the room is in charge of these Air a force and Navy cowboys who are shooting Radio beams into the ionosphere. No wonder there is climate change for which we citizens are being blamed.I would bet that 98% of the U.S. Congress doesn't have a clue!

About the Author

Kevin Schindler is a native of Ohio but has lived in Flagstaff for more than twenty years, working for most of that time at Lowell Observatory. He graduated from Marietta College in 1987, majoring in geology and with a strong focus on paleontology. He currently serves as Lowell Observatory's historian after two decades of leading the observatory's education and outreach efforts. Schindler is an active member of the Flagstaff history and science communities. This is his fifth book.Dr. Will Grundy is a planetary scientist who studies icy planets, Kuiper belt objects and giant planet satellites. He is an editor for Icarus, the leading international scientific journal for Solar System studies, and heads the Surface Composition science theme team for NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto and the Kuiper belt. Dr. Grundy mostly grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. His undergraduate degree was in physics from Yale University, and his PhD in planetary sciences came from the University of Arizona.

I received a copy of this book from a friend at Lowell Observatory and - it is a gem. The description of the arduous road to the discovery of this planet and, later, its satellite Charon, and its recent unveiling by the New Horizons spacecraft, was an eye-opener; it is a combination of grinding labor, dead-ends, good fortune and, above all, imagination and the courage to persevere in the face of naysayers. The writing is fluid and propelling. An excellent set of photographs accompanies the text. Also recommended is William Lowell Putnam's more general history of Lowell, The Explorers of Mars Hill.

This is a tiny book written for high school children. It is an excellent overview of the basics of Stalin's life but it was not what I was expecting. I was hoping for more details and I should have noticed that it only had a few pages. I will donate it to our local library that does not contain any books on Stalin, so that anyone who wants to see how horrible some human beings can be, will get at least the basics of one such human. The only way to learn from our mistakes is to at least be aware of them. Tyrants cannot be allowed to commit such acts.

Joseph Stalin was in my view a butcher and a cold and unfeeling human being. This man like Hitler, could destroy millions, and not miss a moment of sleep. I was very interested in his early life, many books on ths man do not provide much on this area of his life. It seems quite understandable why most people who had to deal with him, were so frightend of him. I would recommend this book to others. I just wish it had been a bit longer. JRV

These are great little reads. Fun. Quick. Kind of a Wikipedia page with cute pictures. Can't complain. Just don't expect cutting edge scholarship.

This book is only 128 pages. The book is only 7 x 5 1/4 inches and the font size is large. Subtract the photos, the maps, glossary, etc. and there isn't that much substance, its more like a pamphlet. While it might be okay for high school students, it's not for serious history buffs. I didn't learn anything new; I've learned more from biographies of FDR, Churchill, etc.

The first thing you need to know is that this book is one of a series called "A Wicked History," so what you get here is the true story of one of history's villains, not a softened whitewash. The second thing you need to know is that the book is published by Scholastic, so take that to mean this is intended for a younger audience - I assume high school age or thereabouts. It is a GREAT overview of who and what Stalin was, and for anyone who wants to inform the younger generation of the dark side of Communism, here is a perfect tool.I am so impressed with this little book on so many levels. It is well researched and written, captivating to read, superbly illustrated inside and out, and is laid out perfectly all the way down to the font choice. Be warned - it contains some photographs depicting death, starvation, and violence. These may be too disturbing for middle-schoolers, but high-schoolers should be able to handle it. The cover illustration is a fantastic woodcut by Mark Summers, the beauty of which is not done justice by the thumbnail image you see here on Amazon.For adult readers, I would recommend this as a quick way to get familiar with the topic of Stalin, especially if you don't have the time or desire to read through the much longer books. Even at only 128 pages, I learned many things I hadn't known before. I knew that many millions of people had died under Stalin, but now I know under what specific circumstances. The author notes that historically, people still favor Stalin over Hitler, probably because Stalin was never forced to account for his crimes. Books like this give me hope that the truth will get more exposure.I look forward to reading more books from the Wicked History series. I wish I could say we found this in a bookstore, but we found it in a gift shop of all places. Why isn't this book in every bookstore? It should be.

Having read other Stalin history I can say I'm very impressed with this small text. I bought it for my grandchildren but enjoyed reading it myself. It is a terrific launching pad for conversations about the evils of socialism. The author has done an excellent job with not only this book but the other two in the series. My advice is buy the set--- Stalin, Hitler, and Mao. All of them are remarkable.

McHugh (formerly an editor at Woman's World and Cosmopolitan, and a frequent New York Times contributor) grew up with a mentally disabled brother for whom she became responsible as an adult after their mother died. McHugh doesn't shrink from the tough issues, even when looking at her own actions. Mostly, she reports, she blocked her brother and his problems out of her life as much as possible. So on one level, this is about McHugh's own journeyone viewed wrenchingly from another angle when one of her own children becomes blind and has a leg amputated as a result of complications from diabetes. First of all, I really wish that people who have not grown up with a disabled sibling would not write negative reviews of this book because they just don't know what it is like. My sister had polio and her illness and subsequent operations took all of my families' resources both financial and emotional. I grew up thinking that I was unimportant and that maybe if I was sick too, I would get attention. My earliest thoughts were those of wishing that I would just die so I didn't have to feel so bad/guilty all the time. Kids that grow up with disabled siblings often feel that they did something wrong to cause the disability. My middle sister and I both felt that way, yet we weren't even born when it happened.Ms. McHugh has written an incredibly honest book that will be greatly appreciated by anyone else in this situation. We live in a world of silence and isolation, how can you ever complain when you can walk, talk, hear, etc. You would be considered extremely selfish. The life of a sibling of a disabled person is very distorted.Thank you, Ms. McHugh for your courage.

I bought this book because I have a child with a disability, and I wanted to do what I can to be helpful to my three other children. It was a wonderful read! It reassured me, which is something all mothers need a lot of. It also reminded me that vigilance about sibling excesses is in order. After reading it, I reminded my children that they don't have to grow up to be superstars in some kind of effort to compensate for what my one child lacks.I enjoyed the author's willingness to be so honest about her feelings, yet even when revealing negative feelings, she asserted a positive spin by contrasting her feelings with more positive feelings of others. It's clear that much of her difficulty had to do with being raised in a different time -- when there was little help, and when disability was considered shameful and secret. My favorite section of this book is the discussion of the common phenomenon of siblings entering the helping professions as adults. She has a fresh and interesting take on this topic.

McHugh's book puts a new perspective out there for siblings of the disabled to come to grips with many of the endemic problems that this population of people (myself being one of them) deals with. Great for adults in understanding where they are coming from and really great for kids in understanding why they feel differently about siblings than their friends might. While there are other books out there, this one puts a bit of a "feel-good spin" on having siblings with disabilities, particularly in the last chapter. Sometimes you need to wallow in the frustration for a while and understand the negative consequences and their impact before you can see the positives, which is the only reason that this book gets four of five stars - aside from that, this is an excellent, helpful book that does a fantastic job of explaining the dilemma of having a sibling with a disability.

This is the first time, I have read a book, that I related to. I always felt so alone in my experiences as a child, and it is actually a surprise, that others have felt the way I felt. A relief too - that others have had similar experiences. I am a sibling of a disabled sister. This book is a must read if you are a sibling of a disabled sibling or a parent.

There is a great need for enlightened books on the topic of growing up with a sibling with a disability. Unfortunately, this book does not answer that need.Ms. McHugh feels the common denominator between her and the other siblings who lament their sibling is the issue of disability. In fact, the common demoninator is self-pity. Most of us in this world have issues with their childhood, whether they be a sibling with a handicap, an abusive parent, a dead beat dad, or an overachieving brother. We all carry many scars. It is not the challenges that we face, but what we make of those challenges.Having a loved one with a disability does not change our essential truth. Yes, it may be difficult at times, but life is, difficult that is. The challenge of facing a disability on a daily basis only makes you more of what you already are. Sometimes that's good, in this case it's very sad.Ms. McHugh may be the sibling of a man with a disability. But she is the one truly handicapped. Handicapped by her inability to stop using the disability as a crutch. The disability nor your brother are the source of your pain, anger and suffering. It is the inability to deal with it in a productive manner.The next book I'd like to read from Ms. McHugh would be about people with disabilities and how they tolerate the whiny, self-important, shallow ramblings of their very confused siblings.

The gorgeous array of culinary dishes, mouthwateringly demonstrated by photos and stills against a rustic and very Persian background can only whet the appetite of the sophisticated foodie. What I particularly liked about Sinaee's book is the wonderful historical context she provides on Iran and the way these dishes have roared into her culinary pallet from the depths of history. She speaks from the vantage point of someone who has traveled the length and breadth of Persia; her father was an officer in the Iranian Imperial Army and was often deployed in various locations in Iran. What I admired about the book, as well, was the diverse choice of dishes from various regions of Iran illustrating the ethnic mosaic of this fascinating country. What I also sense in some of these beautiful illustrations is the artistic taste of the maestro chef herself. Her photo of the delicious Morassa' Polo (Jeweled Rice) with barberries and almonds and silvered pistachio and orange peel vermicelli has been illustrated with refined taste like some gem from the vaults of Safavid treasury. It is incidentally a dish that can be enjoyed by vegetarians as much as meat eaters; there is a feast of ideas there for vegetarians such as the Baghala Ghatogh (beans with garlic and eggs) from Iran's Caspian provinces. Sinaee has selected an eclectic mix of Iranian culinary gems including sweet snacks (walnut cookies), seafood (stuffed fish), Persian stews (lamb and rhubarb) and of course non-meat dishes. In her book, barberries become rubies, pomegranates red diamonds, saffron gold dust and mint emerald. It really is a rich tapestry but above all it celebrates diversity of colours, ethnicity, locations and tastes. She has also included photos of her family to add a personal touch as this book is a personal adventure for her many travels and fond childhood memories that has turned her into this very interesting food writer. I loved the book; it is highly recommended.

What we call Persian cuisine has been shaped by the Persian Empire’s ancient expansion, trade on the Silk Road, and the wide range of climates within Iran. Regional cooking in southern Iran has been influenced by Indian, Arab and African cuisines. The recipes in the book are taken from Gilan, Mazandaran, Azarbaijan, Kurdistan, Hormozgan, and Khuzestan.Persian food is based on the theory of “hot” and “cold”: high-energy, high-protein foods are considered “hot” (no relation to spicy), while many vegetables and fruit (particularly sour ones) are “cold.” Persian meals are a careful balance of these elements; it’s believed that too much “hot” food can cause rashes and hot flashes, while too much “cold” food causes digestive issues and low energy. A meal may balance out each of these elements in the same dish; for example, walnuts are “hot” so they are served with pomegranate (“cold.”).Like my country of Japan, Persian cuisine places great importance on seasonality and the first vegetables of the season, which are called “first of the harvest.” The Persian calendar is based around nature, beginning in March with Noruz (the spring equinox). There is also a glossary of Persian cooking terms.I own numerous Persian cookbooks, and “From the Land of Nightingales and Roses” has quickly become one of my favorites due to the wide range of regional recipes, ease of finding most ingredients (I keep a fairly well stocked Persian pantry of barberries, spices, dried limes and dried herbs on hand), cultural tidbits, and beautiful photography – it is also highly accessible for vegetarians as many of the vegetable and rice dishes are vegetarian or can easily be made so. The flavor combinations are outstanding too: I loved the inclusion of currants and dates in the rice and green lentils with brown butter eggs, or the saffron potato frittata, which combines mashed potatoes, walnuts, cinnamon, and rose petals in a beautifully layered dish that also holds up well for leftovers (it reminded me of the Spanish potato omelette I used to eat as an exchange student in Spain).Fans of Yotam Ottolenghi, Persian, and Middle Eastern cuisine will want to add this to your collection as soon as possible – it’s as close as you can get to a food tour of Iran (which is probably outside the realm of possibility for many readers).

While each story is a standalone, why deprive yourself of all the deliciousness that is Black Light. Loved the chemistry between the main characters. Add a bit of suspense, and you not only have a great book but you also are ready for more. Hated to turn the last page... 5+Star read!!

I loooved it!This is the best book I have read since Lexi Blake's Masters & Mercenaries series.Maggie Ryan is an amazing story teller.This book is about so much more than jus kinky sex. Her characters are so real, and the story is so filled with emotion, strength, humor, struggles, triumphs, hot kinky sex, love and ultimately an HEA.I can not wait to read the rest in the series.Thank you Maggie.Happy Reading:)

I've enjoyed reading almost all of the Black Light stories, but I really liked this one. It's erotic, yes, and has some BDSM elements, but it's ultimately about the relationship between the main characters. It has it's flaws, what book doesn't; but the hero and heroine are likeable characters who like and respect and by the end, love one another. Even in the BDSM scenes there's no cruelty or behavior that makes you question their motives. That in itself merits a good rating in my opinion.

Book four in the Black Light series. Can be read as stand-alone. Black Light is a BDSM club. I liked this book. There was no miscommunication, or lack of communication, or just the characters being in their own heads. This was a good story and the characters actually spent time together developing their HEA. I would highly recommend.

I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. I also want to thank Henry Holt & Co and Netgalley for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review.Adele can see the dead, well she hasn't for awhile because she has been taking her meds. But lately she hasn't been which is why she is shocked when her friend Tori calls her name as she is walking home from the park. However, she notices immediately that she is dead or well she doesn't want to notice that. So despite not wanting to draw attention to herself she makes the call from a payphone to report the body.Soon Adele finds herself in the middle of investigation and if she isn't careful she might just get arrested for her friend's murder.So this is brief and spoilers, but I also want to talk about a few things. I have read most of April's other books and this just kind of fell flat for me. It had so much potential, the plot, the storyline, and even most of the characters. Sadly I can't even rave about the all of the things I want too because spoilers.That being said Adele, on the one hand I loved her, on the other I was like girl wake up... I mean for real. Her mother warned her, but she couldn't listen. Second the investigation was like stumbling in the dark, I mean literally considering how she found out everything. I had a pretty good idea, but wasn't for sure. Mostly because I didn't know if there was going to be a really shocking twist. Kudos for the red herrings and things thrown out to make you think otherwise.Luke, don't get me started on him... and him and Adele...for someone not on the popular side and having been picked one and humiliated she was super naive when it came to him. I know this is a YA so don't think I am judging it too harshly. These are high schoolers and at least 17 so you may not always be completely on the game, but you should know most of the people you are in classes with it, at least by reputation. Overall, I liked the book, I just wanted more from it.

I enjoyed the take on ghosts in this YA paranormal mystery, but unfortunately the plot wasn’t as strong as the concept.Adele has been diagnosed as schizophrenic, but she actually does see dead people, not hallucinations. When a former friend is murdered after they have a fight at a party, Adele discovers Tori’s ghost—and her body. Tori wants Adele to help figure out who murdered her, and Adele reluctantly agrees. Her attempts to find the killer become more urgent when the police start to suspect that Adele herself committed the crime.As an idea, the story works, but the mystery aspect is weak. Adele’s sleuthing is not very effective; she mostly wanders around speculating about whether this or that person might have committed the crime. In the end, the killer’s own miscalculations are their downfall, and the story is wrapped up in a very abrupt way. The identity of the murderer wasn’t exactly a surprise, either.I did like the way Adele’s ghostly gift works. Rather than being haunted by ghosts who follow her around, Adele can only see the dead when she is near their remains. That’s an interesting idea, and it adds some complexity to the story, since Adele can only communicate with Tori at certain times, like the visitation and the funeral. So, Adele really doesn’t have a ghostly partner in her investigations, which is the more typical approach. It’s too bad that the story itself doesn't live up to the premise.A copy of this book was provided through NetGalley for review; all opinions expressed are my own.

I love a good ghost story and a little mental illness thrown in is the best, but this book reads as if directed towards a very narrow age group. I don't think anyone over the age of 16 would find it entertaining, and with all the talk of underage drinking, I wouldn't want anyone younger than 14 reading it. So the targeted- but also appropriate- audience for this novel is basically only 15 year olds. Ok maybe 15-17 because the MC is 17, however the girl on the front cover of the book looks 28. So who knows.Seriously though, can I please complain about how many times Adele was so mystified by her new-found knowledge that sometimes people black out when they drink? There was a good 5 or 6 times she recalled her health class teacher mentioning that sometimes people black out after drinking a lot and don't remember what they did. I felt this was basic knowledge but our MC really seemed to have no clue.There was also no romance. The book begins w Adele randomly kissing Charlie (maybe just so the author would have a reason to keep him as a character) and before at Tori's infamous party (hate this trope) where she drunk-kissed Luke, Tori's boyfriend. *gasp* not."The Lonely Dead" is an okay ghost story for some teenagers.

I don't quite understand the reviews of this, saying it is for very advanced pianists. It is NOT. It is definitely for beginning to intermediate pianists, and I almost returned it for that reason. The arrangements are extremely simple and are mostly from Broadway musicals. I was imagining a wider cross-section of classical, pop, romantic, religious, ballads, etc. The most beautiful piano solos surely encompass more than Broadway pop! My training was mostly classical and there are MANY classical solos that could have been simplified down for this book to add another level of interest. I just feel this is a big book of very limited scope and not that exciting for someone who has much musical exposure. But it is relaxing to sit down and sight-read, and I'm keeping it for my little ones to work through once I teach them to play piano.

Ya know, I think I'm hooked on Hal Leonard books. Their instructional books just superb. This book. .. a definite keeper. I would call it intermediate more so than beginner. Definitely have to know how to read and play. Buy it. If you're advanced you'll still have fun. If you're a beginner you will have a few songs you can play or at least a great book as a goal. Or play the melody right hand. . Plenty of songs to choose from for that.

This is an excellent collection of beautifully arranged love songs and light classics. I did not like the glued ribbed backing, but for a minimal charge, I had Copy Cornet change it to a spiral notebook and pages are easier to turn.

If you want to stir up beautiful haunting memories with rich melodies embellished by generous chords with surprising, fine-tuned voicings, this just might be the book for you.With more than 100 years of sheet music on hand, many of these are duplications for me, but the ones that aren’t are ones I’ve searched for, for years, and here the duplicates all are so much more enticing - arrangements that I suspect will be the ones that I turn to when a melody line starts playing in my head.Fair warning, this book has a powerful magnetic pull that will find you irresistibly back at the keyboard again and again.

I consider this Piano book one of the best I have ever played. I am an advanced pianist who hasn't played in 30 years, but I add chords as I go along. It tends to be a little easier than an intermediate or advanced song book, but it is well worth purchasing and adds hours of enjoyment to play all the piano solos.

Has some beautiful songs in it. Thrilled that it has Les Miserables songs in it. However, it is a little more advanced than I thought it would be. I am an intermediate player and it's a little too hard for me. I also wish it came with the words on the music and also perhaps a CD that you could hear how it is suppose to sound. That would help an intermediate player like myself. I am sure advanced players wouldn't need this. BUt the selection is good and there are a lot of songs. A good thick book.

There is a range of difficulty in this volume that makes many of the songs accessible to the intermediate pianist with room for embellishment for the advanced musician. There are frequent key changes (that sometimes make sense and sometimes do not) in the longer pieces. Overall the scope of the music is very nice, lovely music. Many of the tunes are lovely lullabies that calm a fussy baby (true story) or soothe a busy day. Hubby said "Blue Moon" is worth the purchase of my grand piano. This isn't intended as solely classical piano, for that many books are available, however it contains some very sweet popular music from Billy Joel to Sting and terrific oldies like "Jean" or classics by Gershwin such as "Summertime". I thoroughly enjoy the selections. Clair de Lune, Fur Elise, and Canon in D are examples of the classical pieces included in this book, and they are lovely arrangements. I recommend this for pure enjoyment, relaxing and beautiful songs, and elegant non-tyrannical arrangements.

Be prepared for a very thick book which doesn't stand up that easily on the piano. Several of the arrangements have 3 flats or more, so be prepared to take your time learning and practicing these if you haven't played the piano for awhile.
