The majority of this book is available in a free google preview, however I wished to access the additional content the website mentions which is exclusive to purchasers with a purchase code. I purchased the book, obtained the code and had issues with the website creating an account to view the exclusive content. Numerous attempts were made in 3 different browsers. I attempted to contact the authors via the "contact us" link on the website over a dozen times but there was a server gateway issue which prevented my message from being delivered. I found an email address for contact in the book and emailed over 2 weeks ago, and have received no reply. The book has a facebook page; I have messaged them over weeks ago and received no reply.The directions on how to access each trail are good and detailed however the actual trail descriptions and directions themselves are lacking. The trail animations available to all on their website are futile.

This book is very useful, containing a choice of trails for four regions in Jordan. The guide provides information about features of the different trails they suggest, pictures, GPS coordinates, simple well displayed maps, and access points. Of particular value is the timeless presentation provided here. The guide book does not rely on characteristics that are subject to change over time. A hiker can rely on the information its provides even fifty years from now -- the desert environment it describes will still be there. Other guide books I have used often describe characteristics that are no longer relevant when you are actually there on the ground and trying to rely on that information. A highly recommended guide for a phenomenal natural resource, to be used time and time again.

I was in Jordan in Wadi Rum and I wish I had this guide while I was there. As most travel in Jordan is arranged by travel companies, it is difficult to find your way to the canyons and deserts by yourself. This guide is a great resource for anyone planning a trip to Jordan. The book is remarkably detailed with maps and a key to a website with videos and GPS files. It is also useful to see what hikes are available that are not far from Amman.I bought it for a friend who is planning to go Jordan and who wants to see Petra, Wadi Rum and some canyons with waterfalls near the dead sea. I think this book gives plenty of interesting ideas.

Haven't had a chance to test it out yet in the field, but I've scoured the thing while trip planning and it looks great. The GPS files, available from their website, have come in handy for trip planning as well.

Useful and interesting book for anyone planning on hiking in Jordan. In particular, the GPS trails are essential, just load them on to your phone before you go. They saved me a few times when I veered off trail or where the trail was poorly marked.

I bought this book last year when it was just released. We took a trip to Jordan in June 2014, and traveled on our own - no guide other than this book and the included GPX hiking tracks loaded in our GPS. It was absolutely invaluable on our trip. Totally amazing hikes, and hikes you would never be able to take on your own. Jordan isn't like hiking in the USA or Europe - there are no painted trail markers, cairns, or really any way to know where you're going. With these GPX tracks loaded in your GPS though, you can go for awesome hikes through the desert, emerge through a wadi, and still make it back to your car! It was an incredible trip and the hikes this book let us take - truly heading off in to the middle of nowhere - were beautiful and one-of-a-kind. If you want to be able to go to Jordan, travel around on your own, and experience fantastic hikes, incredible scenery, and amazing places WITHOUT hiring a local guide to take you to places they know, then you need to get this book. Also be sure to bring at least TWO GPS DEVICES to load the GPX track files on - you don't want to be caught mid-hike, in the desert, with no water, with a dead GPS.Photo shows me hiking on the side of a cliff on one of the hikes in the book. Literally, side of a cliff. You'll never get here with any 'normal' guide book. Awesome.

Having been raised a Puritan, she sees a new way of life and thinking when hunting with the scientist by her side. Antonio, though a Catholic, also reveres the natural philosophy that guides the world, in his mind. When they realize the secret, he doesn't shy away from the potential truth but shows her how it could be beneficial to the world. She, however, wants to save her father first, and can't immediately care about the truth. Her journey is from being a simple daughter to a person who wants to realize her dreams, who wants to study the natural world.While the story itself is quite good, and makes for an exciting read, the writing couldn't complement it well enough. Often, I would find myself skimming over paragraphs of needless exposition and description, even though they seemed slightly important in the former case, simply because they were superfluous. There was a lull towards the middle of the book in terms of pacing, and I was tempted to stall and pick up another book to get over it. In conclusion, I enjoyed it but I felt it could have been better edited, to lend more urgency to the plot and create the atmosphere which this book should have.

I picked it up because I've had success with Blankman's books in the past; Prisoner of Night and Fog and Conspiracy of Blood and Smoke were fascinating historical fiction novels. I knew that this new books was also historical fiction, but for some reason, I had thought it was set during the Civil War! I hadn't read the synopsis, otherwise I would have known better. Clearly Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels was on my mind (great book, by the way). Anyway! Traitor Angels is set in 1667 England, and it deals with John Milton and Galileo Galilei.Elizabeth Milton is the third of four daughters of John Milton, a now-blind but once-notorious poet of England. Her father has always treated her differently from her sisters; she can speak, read, and write in many different languages, and she was well-taught in swordplay and self-defense. But most differently, her father trusts her to help him write Paradise Lost (she writes what he dictates). One day, all of her father's training comes to good use: her father has been arrested by the king's men. Elizabeth and her father's strange houseguest Antonio Vivani race across England to uncover her father's carefully hidden clues and secrets, in hopes that whatever he hid might be bartered to the king for his freedom. But what Elizabeth and Antonio discover is more dangerous than one man's life - it could mean the end of society as they know it.What a twisted tale! Well, not "twisted" like one typically means it, but it certainly was tricksy! One of the things I liked the most about this book was the endless clues and puzzles and word games there were in this book. John Milton is known to be a great poet, and his words are his weapon (I think Antonio said something similar, in the book). I love puzzles and games and tricks and clues! Elizabeth and Antonio are clever, and Elizabeth knows her father and his work better than anyone, so it was fun to watch the pair work through the clues.Elizabeth is so incredibly intelligent. Milton's daughters were known to be uncommonly well-taught, and Elizabeth is no exception. She knows many languages (read/write/speak/understand), and she knows swordplay very well (to the point where she keeps knives strapped to her arms at all times), and she has a keen interest in astronomy. Elizabeth is clever and strong and very brave. She does not hesitate to go after her father, to find some way to free him.Antonio was sent to meet John Milton by his master (a Duke in Italy), and he is caught up in the search with Elizabeth when John is arrested. Antonio seems like a strange foreigner at first, but it becomes clear that he is noble and determined to help Elizabeth, and not just because his master sent him. Antonio is kind and quietly protective, but he lets Elizabeth be and is not a seventeenth-century sexist pig. I suppose this is anachronistic, but hey, I like Antonio a lot, and I am letting this slide.Robert Crofts is another very important character in the story. Elizabeth and Antonio meet him on their way to finding her father's clues. Robert is in a position to help them more than they can help themselves, and his assistance is pretty necessary. Robert is exactly what I expected, and I felt for him! I liked his intended, Lady Katherine, very much.There is so much history in this book! Galileo Galilei's work and theories are discussed in this book, and it is one of his works that is what Elizabeth and Antonio end up seeking. I love how meticulously the author does her research, and interlocks so many historical events! She has all the dates and events lined up really well! This story is set just before the Great Fire of London in 1666 - I love how Blankman leaves nothing out! Such great foresight. Or plotting. Or just pure brilliance. I am in awe!This book does have a religious theme to it, or perhaps a theme that somewhat discredits or refutes religion. In 1666, Christianity was dominant in England, and people like Galilei were considered heretics for even postulating ideas that seem contrary to the Church's teachings. Antonio is an atheist, it seems, and Elizabeth starts to question her steadfast Puritan beliefs. Religion is pretty important in this book, but then, it can't NOT be, given the time period.The story was so exciting! It seemed like there was never a dull moment. There were all sorts of action scenes, and balls, and betrayals, and moments of panic, and I enjoyed it all.The romance is not a huge part of the book, but it is there! No love triangle. Watching Antonio and Elizabeth fall for each other is sweet and subtly swoony, though not slow-burn. These two are cute together! And they're both wonderfully smart, so I think they're a great pair.Overall, I think you can tell that I was pleased with this book! It's definitely my favorite of Blankman's three novels. It's a great standalone, I recommend it!What I Did Not Like:Hmm, I don't know that I can think of anything at the moment. I'm not giving the book five stars (I liked it but it's not a new favorite), but I don't have complaints, I think!Would I Recommend It:You don't have to like historical fiction to like this novel! In fact, you don't need to know anything about the 1600s, or John Milton, or Paradise Lost, or Galileo Galilei. It helps (history nerds unite!), but not necessary, as Blankman does a great job of keeping readers educated on what they need to know to understand what is going on (i.e. the context). This is a great story, and an exciting one! I love stories that deal with clues and puzzles and finding something.Even if you didn't like Blankman's debut duology (or maybe never read it), I'd recommend this book; it's completely different from her debut duology! Less nail-biting, scary, etc.Rating:4 stars. As I said, definitely my favorite of Blankman's books! I'm excited to see which time period she'll write about next. She's done the 1900s, 1600s... the possibilities are endless!

To say I was excited to read Traitor Angels would be an understatement. My precise reaction was something along the lines of "Paradise Lost/Da Vinci Code YA adaptation? YES, PLEASE", only with more squeeing sounds and some bouncing.Unfortunately, my hopes were dashed by the second chapter when, in a fit of wild anachronism, John Milton's daughter Elizabeth sneaks into the inn room of a stranger who she fears has come to harm her father, trusting to her wits and the knives she straps to her forearms each day to protect her. (In case you're wondering, the wrist scabbards were where my heart died a little inside.) Thankfully for Elizabeth, the stranger winds up being Antonio Viviani, the attractive student of an old friend of Milton's, and he's arrived just in time for the Miltons (sans Elizabeth) to be carted off to jail by the King's Men. To save her father, Elizabeth must work with Antonio to discover the secret buried in Milton's greatest work, Paradise Lost.Sounds like exactly the kind of great good fun fans of Dan Brown or James Rollins would adore, right? Except it's not fun. The clues are so unchallenging that the author feels the need to remind us constantly that only Elizabeth could possibly unravel them, and most of what we actually get that pertains to Paradise Lost is the main character transcribing it from memory after her father's written copy is destroyed. (Don't even get me started on the realism of that.) And while Blankman's bibliography indicates that she did extensive historical research for this book, she apparently chose not to apply any of it to her heroine, who remains ridiculously modern in her behavior, despite our being forced to read her endless internal struggles over letting go of the Puritan beliefs she's been raised with. Gah, I say. And GAH again.The premise of Traitor Angels is so promising that Blankman's execution suffers even more in comparison. Instead of offering a thrilling literary and historical ride, the reader is stuck plodding along with unconvincing characters who do ridiculous things for indiscernible reasons. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say Traitor Angels makes a Hell of Heav'n, but it certainly lands itself squarely in a very dull purgatory.

I really enjoyed reading the sequel to the first Death Note because they managed to keep the plot line fresh and original and to me, it didn't feel like a rehash of the first in the series. Death note continues its reputation of thick plot line, beautiful art and intriguing characters. I love seeing the task force meet L and their reaction to him which was pretty funny. I am currently waiting for the next two in the series to come in the mail, because after reading one and two, I want to read the whole series. I also enjoyed the crop of new characters that are beneficial to Light's story because it adds an extra element of suspense. I would recommend this series to any manga fan because there is so many different themes that could appeal to all walks of life.

What expectations could I have had? I'm just giving this review so that Amazon will stop bugging me about it. It's a book, it's not like I expected it to do my laundry.

The first half of volume 8 is a total bore. The tension and suspense that I have come to expect from this series was completely lacking in the front half of the book (as well as in the back half of volume 7, but I won't get into that), despite the stakes for the Yagami family being high from the cliffhanger at the end of the last volume. It just wasn't that gripping to question whether Soichiro was going to hand the book over or not. On top of this was the awful use of a lame plot device about a third of the way in. A missle that can neither be tracked nor shot down?! Come on, Ohba! You can do better than this!The second half of the volume picks up the pace, though. Once the threat level soars again and a new Shinigami is introduced into the mix, Light finally has a game again where the stakes are actually up to his level of playing. Mello and Near have a ways to go to live up to their predecessor, but the ride from here promises to be exciting.In all, if you've made it to volume 8, you're already a Death Note junkie, and telling you whether or not to get this volume is pointless. If you are browsing this title for the first time, I have to tell you that this isn't the kind of series you can pick up in the middle. Go back and start from volume 1. I promise it'll be worth the wait to get this far.

So excited and focused on it without knowing spending time. I highly recommend it to everyone. You'll be quite satisfied with it.

I have the Death Note manga through book 3 right now and I cannot wait untill I can get more!! This whole series is filled with suspense and it keeps you thinking, there are a lot of twists and turns. This is my favorite manga and I highly recomend that you try it. The plot is fast pace and so good that I must have read each book 5 times!!

My 12 year old granddaughter loves this series. She reads them as fast as I can get them for her. It's good to see her reading a book instead of seeing her nose in an iPod.

I received The Art of Advocacy earlier this week. I haven't finished it yet, but I've devoured much more of it than I thought I would so soon. I can tell already that it's going to be a mainstay on the bookshelf above my desk. In fact, it should be a mainstay on every litigator's bookshelf.I'm a senior associate in the litigation group of relatively large firm. I do quite a bit of motions briefing in my current gig. I'm an okay writer, and I've been lucky to be blessed by cases with good facts and law (which have led to several wins.) Despite that joy that comes from success, my biggest problem has always been that I find good written advocacy to be really, really difficult. It does not come naturally, and the anxiety/frustration that comes with wanting it to be perfect - but knowing that won't be easy - isn't very fun. This is the reason The Art of Advocacy has sucked me in.The book's style and format is different from any other advocacy text I've seen. And, I love it. Reading through the carefully selected examples has motivated me to dive back into writing projects, trying to emulate the techniques in the excerpts I just read. I imagine it's not unlike watching Michael Jordan highlights before heading out to the basketball court. Whether conscious or not, observing the best inspires you to go out and try to play the same way. (And, hopefully, make your effort a little bit stronger in the process.)So, well done Mr. Messing. You've done a very valuable thing here. This is a real resource, I expect it to overly dog-eared and highlighted in no time. This should be required reading for every lawyer -- from first year associates to partners. Buy it.

In a field in which effective practitioners MUST be good writers, this book is absolutely essential. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone looking to improve their legal writing.I wrote reasonably well before entering law school, so I assumed that I would have no trouble with legal writing. But it turns out that legal writing is hard. Lawyers work in an artificial world in which nearly everything is constrained—the available facts, the authoritative texts, the accepted argumentative forms. Even the structure of an argument is restricted by the court’s local rules. To write effectively, you can’t just navigate these obstacles; you have to actively use them to your advantage. Messing’s book teaches you how to do that at every turn.The book is outstanding in a number of ways, but three stood out to me.First, and most importantly, I wholeheartedly believe in Messing’s pedagogical approach: “the only good way to learn about writing is to read good writing.” That’s particularly true in a field as specialized and insular as law. Understanding the “principles” of effective writing is important, of course, but learning to write by learning rules is like learning how to hit a baseball by studying biomechanics. Messing’s lessons are built around meaty examples from top advocates, so you’re constantly exposed to exemplary work. You can’t help but pick up good habits.Second, the book shows that every aspect of a brief can and should be persuasive. Perhaps the most important thing I learned from the book is the power of facts. (That Messing dedicates three chapters to facts is telling.) There’s even a chapter on weaponizing your table of contents—something I had never considered before picking the book up.Third, while the excerpts are the book’s main attraction, Messing’s copious annotations are packed with useful information. Following his advice from the introduction, I read the examples first, ignoring the annotations. Then I returned for a second reading, this time including the annotations. I was consistently shocked by how little I noticed on my own. Subtle bits of advocacy were folded into every nook of the arguments. Without a veteran guide, it’s difficult to see what good lawyers are doing, or why they’re doing it. Messing breaks it down. At the same time, he doesn’t pull punches. When a lawyer slips up, Messing points it out, and explains how it could have been better.There are other things about the book that I appreciated. It’s simple and straightforward, but covers advanced strategies. The writing is excellent—as it should be in a book about writing! The organization and typesetting are smart and attractive, so the book is enjoyable to read.I could go on, but I won’t. This is a fantastic book. If you’re a law student, you owe it to yourself to read it. Even if you’re an experienced lawyer, I’d be shocked if this book didn’t help you improve your craft.(One note. I originally bought the Kindle edition, but the layout isn’t as good as the print version. Unless you’re trying to go fully digital, get a paper copy.)

Awesome! learned some great tips and trips.However, this book teaches more by showing examples of writing and using annotations to explain what the author of the book felt the author of the brief (or other writing) did correctly/effectively. I like this style way better than my "traditional" legal writing book that was assigned, but it may not be for you.We were assigned the book "Your Client's Story" for Legal Writing class. I didn't like that book and kept getting mediocre grades on assignments. So I bought this book and it helped a LOT!!1

Struggling through my first brief, I heard about this book form my 3L mentor. I'm glad I took his advice. Noah does a great job of distilling the most salient points in each excerpt and then categorizing them by theme. Rather than having to read through the whole book, whenever I'm in a tough spot, I simply jump to the relevant chapter. I've been told time and time again that learning to writing is exercise. Emulating the practices of great legal writers has been a great way to get my feet wet, thanks Noah!
