I am a big fan of his small screen series, such as Foyle’s War, a nuanced, intelligent series about a British detective during WW II and beyond to the Cold War, the short series Injustice, a tense drama about a tormented attorney, and the eccentric but suspenseful Midsomer Murders about a quaint English village and its people, coupled with murder. Magpie Murders had a combination of a vintage English murder, mixed with a contemporary meta-fiction that renders it more complex and twisty.In this, another murder case, Horowitz is even more brazen by casting himself as himself, layering fictional characters and a storyline with the authentic Horowitz, in a sometimes gleefully tingling meta- scene. For example, the writer is in an actual meeting with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, and…well, I won’t reveal what happens, but it really blurs the lines between fact and fiction, that scene being the most arch of all the meta-scenes due to the billion-watt celebrities going eerily from foreground to background with a few strokes of a keyboard.The story: It starts with a short narrative: a 60s-aged woman, Diana Cowper, walks into a funeral parlor to arrange her own funeral, and is murdered six hours later. This was more of a prologue, demonstrating the author’s draft of a story, and then the next chapter we get to the meat of the set-up, and how that funeral parlor scene came to be.In London, Anthony Horowitz, busy with different writing projects and a screenplay, is contacted by a peculiar ex police force detective named Daniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne was once hired by Horowitz’s production team to be used as a consultant in his five-part miniseries, INJUSTICE, to help keep the script’s police procedures credible and methodical. He was brilliant with his advice, and apparently a crack investigator, but was fired by the Metropolitan police force prior to working with Horowitz on the series. Anthony never liked him—he found him morose, socially miscued, prickly, annoying, and intrusive, but he put up with him for his use on the series.Horowitz is inwardly outraged and outwardly dismissive when Hawthorne calls him to offer him a 50-50 book deal to write about himself. Why would anyone want to read about Hawthorne? And how brazen for him to call Horowitz to write this? And 50-50??? Yet, when he finally does meet up with him and Hawthorne tells him about the Cowper case, Anthony is legitimately intrigued. The fact that she has a famous son, a stage and screen actor he’s familiar with, amps up the buzz.Horowitz agrees to do it, i.e. to follow Hawthorne around (who has been curiously hired by the Met to consult, and seems to have primary privileges). The problem— to Anthony’s chagrin, Hawthorne is a cipher and refuses to answer any questions about himself. Anthony expresses to him that if he is going to write about him, “I’d have to know where you live, whether you’re married or not, what you have for breakfast, what you do on your day off. That’s why people read murder stories.” Hawthorne’s response? “I don’t agree. The word is murder. That’s what matters.”As the case and story unfold, and the suspects pile up, it becomes just as thrilling to witness the testy relationship of Hawthorne and Horowitz as it is to watch how the investigation progresses. Moreover, the writer shares the writing process. Although the case is fiction (but treated as fact), you totally believe in it! Horowitz is a genius at including himself BUT getting out of his own way. Only an accomplished, meticulous writer is able to pull that off. You won’t be disappointed.

One is real, the eponymous writer of his 2017 novel, “The Word is Murder”, and the other, the presumably fictional Detective Daniel Hawthorne, living in the confine of its pages.The opening is a terrific hook: a woman walks into a funeral parlor to arrange her own funeral and, very shortly thereafter, is murdered at home. Coincidental, calculated, or something else?The plot quickly unfolds as the back-stories come to light. Various characters have involvements with one another, some concealed and some obscured only to be revealed as the drama requires. And there is more than one murder to be explained.Many of the characters you might expect to find in a large-scale film production: a doting mother, an ambitious self-absorbed actor, his unmarried girlfriend with their young daughter, an unhappy couple with a disabled son and nanny, an unctuous funeral director and staff, to name a few.The most curious relationship is between writer Horowitz and ex-detective Hawthorne. It initially seems to be an updated Watson and Homes pairing but given all the present television recreations, it is not surprising that this is different. They share similar traits, curiosity and desire to figure out what is happening, but they are quite distinct at the cores: the writer is collaborative by nature of his trade, whereas the ex-detective is a loner with his own dark corners.Anthony Horowitz borrows quite literally from his own life experiences, including real people in the entertainment world who briefly and somewhat distractingly appear in the story. Other than establishing the author’s need to work with others, the information seems to slow down the pace.On the other hand, Daniel Hawthorne (borrowed from Nathaniel Hawthorne?) seems to be waiting for Horowitz to animate him. He lives in borrowed quarters, has an estranged wife and son, reads Albert Camus’ “The Outsider”, and builds models of former real life military equipment. Seems like a cipher.The author has had great success layering stories within stories as he did in “Magpie Murders.” In that tale, partially set in current times, his characters are all fictional. This book dragged on and on. I only finished it because I started it, but i didn’t care for the way it was written. It was hard to get into the characters; no one was very likeable. The author, writing in the first person, kept expressing how ambivalent he was about writing this book. I was just as ambivalent about the value of reading it. Definitely not a fun read, nor a particularly rewarding one. This was a major disappointment for me, especially after reading the Magpie Murders, one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Anthony Horowitz’s “meta” mystery, “Magpie Murders”, I joyfully dove into “The Word is Murder” which has similar playful “conceits”. While not quite a book-inside-a-book, “The Word is Murder” is about Horowitz (yes, he’s written himself into the story) collaborating with a former Detective Inspector named Hawthorne, to both solve a murder and write a book about it. Basic premise: a woman walks into a funeral home to arrange her funeral details, and a few hours later she’s murdered in her own home. Coincidental? Hawthorne doesn’t believe in coincidences. Fans of “Magpie Murders” will enjoy all the “real life” references to actors, directors, authors, works of literature, film, and TV series (many of Horowitz’s own writing). The book doesn’t at all feel like a “commercial” for Horowitz – though it did compel me to add the BBC series, “Injustice” to my Amazon Prime Watch List. Pretty much anything Horowitz writes appeals to me; his plots are well crafted, his characters are interesting and quirky (Hawthorne is a real piece of work!) and his “Brit Wit” is exceptionally appealing.

She had me think of something that had caused me pain. That would be my sister... unfortunately. So I thought about how she made me feel and then thought of something good; that was how good God is! We only did the healing code for a few minutes and when we (3 of us) were done the bad feelings were gone! It's been almost a week and I can still think of my sister without the pain.You can google "the healing codes" to see youtube videos and learn more. I highly recommend this for healing all those hurts!

I am a US Army veteran. I have Post Traumatic Stress as well as depression. I have been on a journey of recovery for around 30 years now. I've tried literally everything, including AA, ALANON, drugs, disability, counseling, you name it. I have gone the traditional route on everything and absolutely nothing worked to help me get better. I came to the conclusion that most mental health professionals are sicker than I am, and they were working out their problems at my expense. All talking did was reinforce the events that led to my problems in the first place.I started this program about 2 years ago. One of the most important things I learned during this process is that the people who pan this technique never tried it, or if they did, they didn't stick with it. You won't get better over night. Each of us is different, and so it will take a different amount of time and often different codes to help each of us get well.Nowhere in this book does it say this is a cure for anything. It is not. Dr. Loyd gives plenty of disclaimers. The purpose of the Codes is to heal the underlying stress that each of us has. The studies he cites throughout the book are scientific, particularly the ones done by the Army, and it is true that memories are stored in the cells of our bodies, not in the brain. That's why it is so difficult to get well.What this system actually does is to help heal the emotions behind the memories and when those emotions are healed, the memories that cause us so many problems can't cause us problems anymore. It takes that stress off the body so that the body can heal itself. The body is largely self healing, and when our bodies aren't under stress, it is able to heal itself much more quickly.This is not an easy program to do. It is not a magic pill because it requires consistency and the right attitude on the part of the person who is doing the codes to help you get well. For those who say that Dr. Loyd is in it for the money have never visited his websites because he gives away tons of free content that includes free codes and other tips to help those who are using the codes get better faster. Even the monthly healing code session is only $50, which is a steal, and you get a copy of the recording so you can use it over and over.For those who are interested in genuinely getting well, this is an excellent place to start. The claims, as well as the scientific studies mentioned in the book, are all easily proven. I don't always understand how it works. I just know that it does. I feel better than I ever have in my life. My triggers are melting away, and I feel happy most of the time. I feel positive about my life, and I am now watching the pieces fall into place. I feel healthier and younger now, and I have a better health profile now than I did in my 20s. I am 52 years old. I don't care. It works, and it works very well, and as I continue to get well, all my critics have stayed sick. The proof here is ultimately in the results, and this will give you results like you have never experienced. You just have to do it.

This book has dramatically improved my health. Though I found the writing a little cumbersome, I did appreciate being able to jump ahead to the part where they explain how to perform the codes. After a couple of weeks, I realized if I held my hands in the correct position, I could actually feel a pulsing sensation. After that, I made sure I felt that pulse before I started counting. I also learned I could conjure up this pulse and it would continue without me having to hold my hands in that position. I then learned I could do it almost anywhere - even in the very chaotic Havana airport! In the 8 months that I've been doing this exercise, I have gotten rid of sphenoid sinus disease, severe shoulder pain and had improvement with insomnia and hot flashes. I hearty recommend trying this out for anyone who wanted to improve their health without drugs or surgery.

…because it is not the normal “of,” but rather, “in.”I recently read two other works of Jan Morris (née: James): Trieste And The Meaning Of Nowhere and Conundrum (New York Review Books Classics), the latter describes the journey from one first name to the other. Among other achievements in his/her life, as a reporter, Morris was the first one to race down Mount Everest with the “scoop” that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first humans to reach the summit in 1953. This book represents another first, of sorts. Morris accompanied Sultan Said bin Taimur, of Muscat, on the first motorized crossing of southeastern Arabia, from the south coast at Salalah, across the very barren Jaddat al Harasis, with a side trip to Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), and on to the disputed Buraimi Oasis and then to the Sohar, on the Gulf of Oman, and down the coast to his home, and capital, Muscat. This journey occurred in December, 1955.And the significance of the preposition? Today, Muscat is the capital of Oman. But in 1955, they were, “sorta,” two different places. Nominally, the Sultan ruled the entire country, but neither he nor his predecessors had been in the interior during the 20th century. Rather, they ruled the various coastal enclaves, and the interior, with its “capital” at Nizwa, was ruled by a very conservative Imam. And if one is attempting to extract that magic elixir of the 20th century, namely oil, as the British were doing at Fahud, the fussiness of sovereignty proved to be an enormous inconvenience, to put it mildly. So, with some British-officered native forces, they drove the Imam from power, with apparently only one shot being fired.The December, 1955 trip was a “victory lap” for the Sultan, and he invited Morris along to document it. Salalah is one of the more fascinating places on the Arabian Peninsula since a small portion of the monsoon that waters India touches it commencing in August of each year. Normally the weather is misty and overcast, and the surrounding crescent of plains and mountains lush green. It is from this area that another elixir, frankincense, which was sought by the Roman Empire, two millennium earlier, brought much prosperity to the region. From Salalah, the convoy raced (and that does seem to be the operative word) across the roadless wastes of Jaddat al Harasis, which is a hard 12-hour drive on asphalt. It took them three days. Morris says little about the logistical arrangements of such a trip, but does mention that the oil company had prepositioned oil and water along the route for the Sultan’s convenience.The Sultan entered Nizwa, with its famous round fort, and without the Imam, apparently unconcerned about the possibility of a few unrepentant supporters of the “ancien regime.” Naturally he was well-received by the oil community at Fahud, and Morris describes the expat lifestyle there that was so similar to Aramco’s in Dhahran. Buraimi is a true anomaly, contested by three different countries, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi, and Oman. The Americans backed the former, the British backed the latter two, and somehow it was peacefully resolved, the latter two literally splitting the nine villages of the oasis 6 to 3. From Buraimi, the convoy raced on to a warm reception in the agricultural settlements along the Batinah coast, and then back to Muscat, which closed its gates at night, just like a medieval village when Morris was there.The author is a good observer, and admits he knew virtually nothing about the country before undertaking the trip. For Morris, the Pax Britannica glass is more than half full. As she says in the acknowledgments: “If there is a flavor of the 1920’s to this list, an aroma of open cockpits, Rolls-Royce armored cars, proconsuls and spheres of influence, it is because our adventure was one of the last of a line, a late flourish of Britain in Arabia… the ghosts of Curzon and Gertrude Bell rode with us approvingly.” And that perspective mars this account, as evidenced by such statements: “There are queer subtleties in the mind of the Semite,” and “… their ponderous muskets to fight out their ridiculous squabbles.” How easily the Somme seems to be forgotten.In December, 1997 I drove from Riyadh to the UAE, and on to (united) Oman, camping for three glorious days on the beach south of Muscat. I made the very large circuit around the Jebel Akhdar, back to the Buraimi Oasis, where one drives down a city street with signs alternating, telling you that you have just entered Oman, and then the UAE. My big regret is not having driven to Salalah. But there is a fundamental problem that the best time to be there, August, is the worse time to drive those terribly boring 12 hours. I found Oman fascinatingly different from the surrounding countries, much more orderly, a bit of Denmark on the peninsula, where people obey the speed limit, and drive much safer. And a major reason for this is Sultan Qaboos, who overthrew his father, the man Morris accompanied, in 1970, and modernized the country in a prudent and rational way. (And he is STILL the ruler, almost a half century later.)4-stars for Morris fascinating accounting of an unusual time and place.

In an effort to increase regional knowledge in advance of an assignment in Oman, I bought this book together with several others to augment knowledge gained in an earlier visit to the Sultanate in '03. The book is short and set in 1955, and is essentially the diary of a traveler accompanying the Sultan's traveling party on a historic journey through the country at the end of a brief civil war. While interesting in parts, the trip was done at break-neck pace and therefore true insights on the country are limited. While an interesting snapshot in time, the book nonetheless was something of a disappointment. I expected to get a book which would really paint a solid picture of the country prior to the reign of Sultan Qaboos. In a way this does have elements of that, but it is more aimed at the romantic traveler than it is a student of the country or its history.

Over 60 years later, Jan (then James) Morris's account of the grand progress of the Sultan in Oman through his poverty stricken desert country is still powerfully cinematic in effect. The stately forms of the benign autocrat as he makes his way, supported by proud tribesmen in full fighting regalia and meeting with local chieftains of all consuming dignity and patience reflects, bar the twentieth century luxuries of Rolls Royces, life as it was lived for centuries before the discovery of oil transformed the Gulf. This is quick, beautifully written and compelling read.

Classic! A Mapplehorpe ‘must have’ for your collection.

I was introduced to Robert Mapplethorpe sometime in the early 1990's, and his art and humanity have stuck with me since. I am a heterosexual Black male, and I find his homo-erotic images to be quite affecting. His graphic photography involving male genitalia and overt sexuality, seem to be saying "this is my lifestyle and my art. You can't say you love my art if you aren't willing to engage this content". I agree with him.Some might protest the "objectification" of Black males in the book. The energy of the men in the photos seem to suggest that it was a collaboration and that to some degree all photography involves the objectification of the person being being photographed. This is a fabulous book. The photography is gorgeous. If one loves ethnic ornamentation but cannot obtain these pieces, this book is the next, best thing to owning them.

Interesting material

Breath-taking color photos of no longer used and fastly dissappearing head adornments. All pieces are photographed from private collecters and muemseums.

The book is visually stunning: some readers may be disappointed, depending on what they are seeking. The book consists of superb shots of pieces from Asia, Africa, Oceana, and (South)America. The pieces consist of a variety of head ornaments: combs, bands, nose ornaments, etc., but do not include earrings (which are covered in A World of Earrings) or hats. The representation is uneven, with the collections for Asia and Africa being much stronger than for Oceana (perhaps 24 pieces) or South America (perhaps a dozen pieces). Since this is a catalog of a personal collection, one obviously cannot have pictures of what is not there, and this is not a criticism. However, the person researching international jewelry should recognize the limitation.The pictures themselves are stupendous: large with extremely clear detail. Depending on the item, there may be several on a pages (as with small hairpins) or one piece may have a double spread. The pictures are solely of the pieces; there is no attempt to display them as they would be used. They are arranged in geographical sections, with a brief introduction to the jewelry of that area. All of the caption information is collected at the end of the book, which I suppose avoids detracting from the pictures, but which some may find annoying. At least every page seems to have a discreet page number, so it is easy to match them to the captions. Anyone with a scholarly interest may find this disappointing: there is minimal information about the size of the pieces, generally the largest dimension only, and only one, even if multiple pieces are shown in the same picture. Only a very broad provenance is given, and little about the age. One comb for example, notes that this style was derived from the Spanish mantilla beginning in the 17th century, but it does not indicate if it is also contemporary. I a a little confused by the notation in the caption about a piece from Nigeria referring to Pharaonic Egypt. Does this reflect cultural sharing? Does this mean that the piece is from the time in history? The precise comment is that the ancient Egyptians often copied natural forms, but looking through the pictures, isn't that true of most cultures?The index is very detailed in that one may, for example, look up pieces from Ming Dynasty China under either Ming or China. It would be helpful if a time period was specified for the dynasties. Also, the page numbers refer only to text, either in the section introductions or the captions. Thus, one is directed to the captions for the jewelry, and goes from there to the pictures. There are also maps and an extensive bibliography.Well worth oohing and ahhing over, but will be only a supplement for a person with scholarly interests.
