I own several of Kerry Lord's crochet books and have been enjoying her last one which is based on monsters. This time, she brings a pick and choose style book based on dolls. There are flip pages which show heads and bodies and you choose which one goes with which.Note that, once again, the instructions are provided in UK terms. Essentially, for the purposes of this book, UK dc (double crochet) is equal to US sc (single crochet.) To get full equivalents for UK/US terms, you can easily find them on the internet.The photo instructions in the book are done extremely well. Between “seeing” how to do something with the photo and reading the instructions, it is easy to follow along. Another great thing about this book is that it is spiral bound so turning both full pages and partial pages is done with the touch of a finger. As you are choosing what goes with what, it makes it much easier to put a project together than would have been if a traditional binding had been used.The first part of the book is made up of two segments – head and body. You flip to the pages you want based on the photo and on the back of the page are the instructions.There are three suggested sizes of yarn for the dolls DK, Aran (worsted) and Bulky. I think you can use any size yarn but need to be consistent throughout the project to keep the component sizes in synch.The book also goes into some detail about skin tones, hair and various wardrobe accessories that you can make using the patterns in the book. I appreciate that both female and male doll components were included as I crochet for both my grandson and granddaughter. They have enjoyed the monsters I have been making from Ms. Lord's last book and will now have some dolls to play with as well. I simply can't imagine where Ms. Lord's imagination will take us next, but I will certainly be looking for any new crochet books she releases.

This book is very well set up I love the patterns. Had to double take a project though when it was coming out too big as a reminder this book is written in UK crochet terms which are different from US by a smidge. Easy fix though and it came out much better the second time.

I was really looking forward to making some of these, however I came across several mistakes. Some of the patterns in the costume section were seriously out of order in an obvious way. It makes them difficult to follow. I'm going to return the item.

Despite multiple attempts with the standard body- I can only conclude that the written pattern has some mistakes. Cute book and I like the format however am disappointed in the mistakes.

I like the way it is an adult board book with 3 partitions on each page to select hair body. and clothing.I can be creative--and correct, with my doll making. This will be a faorite, oft referred to instruction book.

I am much more comfortable knitting, but for certain things, liked stuffed animals and dolls, crochet is better. This book gave me little tips for crocheting which have helped me with all other patterns as well as these. Love the creativity in these patterns.

I am a forever fan of Kerry Lord's crochet books. I have tried other artists, but I feel her patterns are the best. Friends and family always want me to crochet something from her patterns, and I know the creations from this book will be just as popular.

We keep this book on our coffee table in the living room and many of our guests look through it. We live in the city of St. Louis and it's very interesting to see before and after pictures of our city. I first saw this book at my doctor's office and I was so engrossed with it, that after I was called in - I put it down, and then stayed to finish looking at it after my appointment.

I am enjoying this book as I grew up in Saint Louis, living there from 1943 to 1960. I am planning on making a return trip and will use this book to choose sites to see. Having been gone for 50 years, it is fun for me to see the changes in my hometown.

Love this book! Grew up in St. Louis!

Although it is written in a prose format, this book immediately draws the reader into it's plot. As a matter of fact, the prose format is an advantage because it cuts out all of the unnecessary "fluff" and leaves just the "meat" of the story for the reader to enjoy. After 45 minutes of dedicated reading, I was disappointed to see this book end, and I highly recommend it! Definitely a must-read!

Got this book for our 9year old daughter, who loved reading it. She enjoyed the colorful picture the author paints of Cuba, while learning about how girls lived during that time period. Engle does a superb job weaving the thoughts and dreams of the three main characters into a thoughtful story of friendship. Would recommend to anyone!

In 1851, author and activist Fredrika Bremer spent three months in Cuba, traveling around the island with a young African-born slave who belonged to her hosts and who served as Bremer's translator. Drawing upon the nineteenth century writings and sketches of Fredrika Bremer, an early, important, and still relatively unknown figure in the women's rights movement, Margarita Engle has crafted THE FIREFLY LETTERS, a prose poetry dramatization of Bremer's time on the island.The story is told in alternating poems by Fredrika, her young translator Cecilia, by Cecilia's husband, and by Elena the fictional daughter of Bremer's hosts, a twelve year-old growing up in wealth and privilege who often seems to have even less freedom than the slaves owned by her father.It is when Fredrika leaves the confines of her host's home with Cecilia in tow (leaving young Elena stuck at home without companionship), and sets out across the island, that we come to grasp how the lively and rich culture that the slaves have brought with them contrasts so sharply with the strait-jacketed patriarchal society and customs from which Fredrika has escaped and to which Elena is a young, unwilling victim.THE FIREFLY LETTERS is a sterling example of how less can so often be more. Good prose poetry -- like all good poetry -- relies on strategic employment of the right words to paint pictures. As with so many great poetry novels, there is so much payoff here and relatively few words.I had not previously heard of Fredrika Bremer. I had no idea that Sweden and Denmark had enacted that legislation so far in advance of the U.S. I had no idea what Cuba was like 160 years ago. And, yet, in learning so much, I was able to read through this latest work by award-winner Margarita Engle in a very short amount of time, and then return to reread and savor a bunch of the poems I'd marked along the way.I'm not the biggest fan of Women's History Month. (I don't like the idea that one of the twelve months is for women, arguably leaving the other eleven for celebrating the brilliant guys who seem to have always gotten us into these messes.) But, being that it is March, it does make good sense to line up a copy of this book asap.

Before I even get to the book, let me just say, I love this cover. The artist behind it is Ana Juan Firefly Letters is written in free verse. Fredrika Bremer, was an author and she fought for the rights of women. In 1851 Bremer went to Cuba for three months. Engle read, Bremer's letters, diaries, notes and sketeches from that visit, The FireFly Letters is derived from that. ( I got all this lovely information from the historical note in the back of the book)The Swedish consulate places Fredrika with a rich family in Cuba. The family has slaves. Cecilia, a slave (around 15 yrs old), is Bremer's guide and translator. 12 yr old Elena, is the daughter of the house. The story is told through these three women. Engle has given Cecilia's husband Beni, a few poems of his own. I like them, especially the first one. Though I do think Beni's poem messed with the rhythm of the story a little.CeciliaThe huts of the freed slavesmake me think of my lost homeI remember a ghostly mistrising over the riverafter a boy drownedtrying to escapefrom the slave traders.The mist was silentbut the water sang softlytelling its ownflowing storyIf I had knownthat my father would trade mefor a stoloen cowI would have run awayinto the forestto live in a nestmade of dreamsand green leaves.Fredrika is against slavery and hates how women are treated in Cuba. Fredrika documented her trip in hopes of making people care about what was going on. With Cecilia as her guide Fredrika see much of Cuba. At night the two save fireflies, from the children who pull of their wings.Elena watches from her window. Its 1851, and its not proper for a young girl to do, basically anything. Elena can only do as she is told. She longs for a little independence.Engle's poems are beautiful. The voices of the three women fit together like music. The Firefly Letters was simply a pleasure to read.

This book, told in verse style, tells the story of Fredrika Bremer, a women's right pioneer. Fredrika travels to Cuba and realizes that slavery and women being controlled run rampant in Cuba. She begins to write about it and this book is based on her journals and letters. This book is told through Fredrika, her translator (who happens to be a slave) Cecilia, and a fictionalized rich girl whose family Fredrika is staying with named Elena. This book was a quick read. It was interesting to read about an area that I am not familiar with and about a person I did not know anything about. I enjoyed it.[...]

A luminous novel in verse. Engle evokes so much emotion, flavor, color and sound with so few words. Also a very interesting story and well drawn characters.

After reading Horowitz’s MAGPIE MURDERS, I was compelled to read this one straightaway. I am a big fan of his small screen series, such as Foyle’s War, a nuanced, intelligent series about a British detective during WW II and beyond to the Cold War, the short series Injustice, a tense drama about a tormented attorney, and the eccentric but suspenseful Midsomer Murders about a quaint English village and its people, coupled with murder. Magpie Murders had a combination of a vintage English murder, mixed with a contemporary meta-fiction that renders it more complex and twisty.In this, another murder case, Horowitz is even more brazen by casting himself as himself, layering fictional characters and a storyline with the authentic Horowitz, in a sometimes gleefully tingling meta- scene. For example, the writer is in an actual meeting with Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, and…well, I won’t reveal what happens, but it really blurs the lines between fact and fiction, that scene being the most arch of all the meta-scenes due to the billion-watt celebrities going eerily from foreground to background with a few strokes of a keyboard.The story: It starts with a short narrative: a 60s-aged woman, Diana Cowper, walks into a funeral parlor to arrange her own funeral, and is murdered six hours later. This was more of a prologue, demonstrating the author’s draft of a story, and then the next chapter we get to the meat of the set-up, and how that funeral parlor scene came to be.In London, Anthony Horowitz, busy with different writing projects and a screenplay, is contacted by a peculiar ex police force detective named Daniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne was once hired by Horowitz’s production team to be used as a consultant in his five-part miniseries, INJUSTICE, to help keep the script’s police procedures credible and methodical. He was brilliant with his advice, and apparently a crack investigator, but was fired by the Metropolitan police force prior to working with Horowitz on the series. Anthony never liked him—he found him morose, socially miscued, prickly, annoying, and intrusive, but he put up with him for his use on the series.Horowitz is inwardly outraged and outwardly dismissive when Hawthorne calls him to offer him a 50-50 book deal to write about himself. Why would anyone want to read about Hawthorne? And how brazen for him to call Horowitz to write this? And 50-50??? Yet, when he finally does meet up with him and Hawthorne tells him about the Cowper case, Anthony is legitimately intrigued. The fact that she has a famous son, a stage and screen actor he’s familiar with, amps up the buzz.Horowitz agrees to do it, i.e. to follow Hawthorne around (who has been curiously hired by the Met to consult, and seems to have primary privileges). The problem— to Anthony’s chagrin, Hawthorne is a cipher and refuses to answer any questions about himself. Anthony expresses to him that if he is going to write about him, “I’d have to know where you live, whether you’re married or not, what you have for breakfast, what you do on your day off. That’s why people read murder stories.” Hawthorne’s response? “I don’t agree. The word is murder. That’s what matters.”As the case and story unfold, and the suspects pile up, it becomes just as thrilling to witness the testy relationship of Hawthorne and Horowitz as it is to watch how the investigation progresses. Moreover, the writer shares the writing process. Although the case is fiction (but treated as fact), you totally believe in it! Horowitz is a genius at including himself BUT getting out of his own way. Only an accomplished, meticulous writer is able to pull that off. You won’t be disappointed.

An ex-British police detective and an author of fictional mysteries get together to solve a crime in seemingly current day London. One is real, the eponymous writer of his 2017 novel, “The Word is Murder”, and the other, the presumably fictional Detective Daniel Hawthorne, living in the confine of its pages.The opening is a terrific hook: a woman walks into a funeral parlor to arrange her own funeral and, very shortly thereafter, is murdered at home. Coincidental, calculated, or something else?The plot quickly unfolds as the back-stories come to light. Various characters have involvements with one another, some concealed and some obscured only to be revealed as the drama requires. And there is more than one murder to be explained.Many of the characters you might expect to find in a large-scale film production: a doting mother, an ambitious self-absorbed actor, his unmarried girlfriend with their young daughter, an unhappy couple with a disabled son and nanny, an unctuous funeral director and staff, to name a few.The most curious relationship is between writer Horowitz and ex-detective Hawthorne. It initially seems to be an updated Watson and Homes pairing but given all the present television recreations, it is not surprising that this is different. They share similar traits, curiosity and desire to figure out what is happening, but they are quite distinct at the cores: the writer is collaborative by nature of his trade, whereas the ex-detective is a loner with his own dark corners.Anthony Horowitz borrows quite literally from his own life experiences, including real people in the entertainment world who briefly and somewhat distractingly appear in the story. Other than establishing the author’s need to work with others, the information seems to slow down the pace.On the other hand, Daniel Hawthorne (borrowed from Nathaniel Hawthorne?) seems to be waiting for Horowitz to animate him. He lives in borrowed quarters, has an estranged wife and son, reads Albert Camus’ “The Outsider”, and builds models of former real life military equipment. Seems like a cipher.The author has had great success layering stories within stories as he did in “Magpie Murders.” In that tale, partially set in current times, his characters are all fictional. This book dragged on and on. I only finished it because I started it, but i didn’t care for the way it was written. It was hard to get into the characters; no one was very likeable. The author, writing in the first person, kept expressing how ambivalent he was about writing this book. I was just as ambivalent about the value of reading it. Definitely not a fun read, nor a particularly rewarding one. This was a major disappointment for me, especially after reading the Magpie Murders, one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Anthony Horowitz’s “meta” mystery, “Magpie Murders”, I joyfully dove into “The Word is Murder” which has similar playful “conceits”. While not quite a book-inside-a-book, “The Word is Murder” is about Horowitz (yes, he’s written himself into the story) collaborating with a former Detective Inspector named Hawthorne, to both solve a murder and write a book about it. Basic premise: a woman walks into a funeral home to arrange her funeral details, and a few hours later she’s murdered in her own home. Coincidental? Hawthorne doesn’t believe in coincidences. Fans of “Magpie Murders” will enjoy all the “real life” references to actors, directors, authors, works of literature, film, and TV series (many of Horowitz’s own writing). The book doesn’t at all feel like a “commercial” for Horowitz – though it did compel me to add the BBC series, “Injustice” to my Amazon Prime Watch List. Pretty much anything Horowitz writes appeals to me; his plots are well crafted, his characters are interesting and quirky (Hawthorne is a real piece of work!) and his “Brit Wit” is exceptionally appealing.

Awesome job from an excellent seller!!!I am excited to read the book and learn how to heal my body with my own energy. I did a "healing code" with a new friend that showed me how it's done. She had me think of something that had caused me pain. That would be my sister... unfortunately. So I thought about how she made me feel and then thought of something good; that was how good God is! We only did the healing code for a few minutes and when we (3 of us) were done the bad feelings were gone! It's been almost a week and I can still think of my sister without the pain.You can google "the healing codes" to see youtube videos and learn more. I highly recommend this for healing all those hurts!

I am a US Army veteran. I have Post Traumatic Stress as well as depression. I have been on a journey of recovery for around 30 years now. I've tried literally everything, including AA, ALANON, drugs, disability, counseling, you name it. I have gone the traditional route on everything and absolutely nothing worked to help me get better. I came to the conclusion that most mental health professionals are sicker than I am, and they were working out their problems at my expense. All talking did was reinforce the events that led to my problems in the first place.I started this program about 2 years ago. I would have gotten better a lot faster had I worked the program consistently. One of the most important things I learned during this process is that the people who pan this technique never tried it, or if they did, they didn't stick with it. You won't get better over night. Each of us is different, and so it will take a different amount of time and often different codes to help each of us get well.Nowhere in this book does it say this is a cure for anything. It is not. Dr. Loyd gives plenty of disclaimers. The purpose of the Codes is to heal the underlying stress that each of us has. The studies he cites throughout the book are scientific, particularly the ones done by the Army, and it is true that memories are stored in the cells of our bodies, not in the brain. That's why it is so difficult to get well.What this system actually does is to help heal the emotions behind the memories and when those emotions are healed, the memories that cause us so many problems can't cause us problems anymore. It takes that stress off the body so that the body can heal itself. The body is largely self healing, and when our bodies aren't under stress, it is able to heal itself much more quickly.This is not an easy program to do. It is not a magic pill because it requires consistency and the right attitude on the part of the person who is doing the codes to help you get well. For those who say that Dr. Loyd is in it for the money have never visited his websites because he gives away tons of free content that includes free codes and other tips to help those who are using the codes get better faster. Even the monthly healing code session is only $50, which is a steal, and you get a copy of the recording so you can use it over and over.For those who are interested in genuinely getting well, this is an excellent place to start. The claims, as well as the scientific studies mentioned in the book, are all easily proven. I don't always understand how it works. I just know that it does. I feel better than I ever have in my life. My triggers are melting away, and I feel happy most of the time. I feel positive about my life, and I am now watching the pieces fall into place. This program has actually helped me heal my issues, and both my mental and physical health have improved to levels I never thought were possible. I feel healthier and younger now, and I have a better health profile now than I did in my 20s. I am 52 years old. I don't care. It works, and it works very well, and as I continue to get well, all my critics have stayed sick. The proof here is ultimately in the results, and this will give you results like you have never experienced. You just have to do it.

This book has dramatically improved my health. Though I found the writing a little cumbersome, I did appreciate being able to jump ahead to the part where they explain how to perform the codes. After a couple of weeks, I realized if I held my hands in the correct position, I could actually feel a pulsing sensation. After that, I made sure I felt that pulse before I started counting. I also learned I could conjure up this pulse and it would continue without me having to hold my hands in that position. I then learned I could do it almost anywhere - even in the very chaotic Havana airport! In the 8 months that I've been doing this exercise, I have gotten rid of sphenoid sinus disease, severe shoulder pain and had improvement with insomnia and hot flashes. I hearty recommend trying this out for anyone who wanted to improve their health without drugs or surgery.
