Great for ideas

I’ve got to say it: Look at the sub-title of this book – ‘A Source book of Decoration and Design’. It sure is!The ‘Introduction’, pages 9-15, begins by describing how this book came into being by defining what ‘Oriental’ means. On page 9, “This book will identify what constitutes ‘Oriental’ style both traditional and contemporary, in a variety of indigenous settings, from the relatively well-known ones of China and Japan to the less accessible cultures of Korea, Thailand, Bali, and Tibet. It is important to stress that there is no single, definitive ‘Oriental’ style, but rather a wealth of diverse treatments and approaches… (which) range from the authentic imitation of traditional interiors to the exuberant, eclectic blending of arts and artifacts from a variety of sources. These diverse themes have been adopted or adapted by Europeans and Americans to create their own, highly personal interpretations of ‘Oriental’ style.”This style includes Frank Lloyd Wright’s idea of organic architecture through his identification of Japan in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Following this were the wars with Japan and the Koreas, and then in dealing with countries like Singapore and Hong Kong. All of these ideas, places, and things have influenced how people define what is ‘Oriental’ and how they create it in their homes.This 1990 hard-cover book has 224 semi-glossy pages, many of which have at least 1 color or black and white photo per page.Of these ‘Oriental’ countries mentioned above, I have visited China, Japan, Thailand, Bali, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The last 4 – many times. Being in these countries has influenced my own ideas of ‘Oriental’ style.The authors are Michael Freeman, Sian Evans, and Mimi Lipton. The lead author, Freeman, has a master’s degree in geology from Oxford, has done photography in major magazines, such as the Smithsonian, and he’s written several books.This is a Bulfinch Book, Boston/ Thames and Hudson Ltd, London.The ‘Contents’ breaks down more Japanese cultural elements. There are 5 main sections. Look at the following pages to see some of the things that ended up in our home as a ‘variation on a theme’, in one way or other, of the following pages: 63-64, 88, 90, 95, 105, 114, 116, 123, 140, 148-149, 159, 164, 170, 188-189, and 199.This is an outstanding book for anyone who wants to learn about ‘Oriental’ living, cut in with a hybrid-western interpretation. This book won’t remain on your bookshelf; it will end up on your coffee table to pick up, page through, and dream.I would give this book 10 stars if I could!

Studying this book made me appreciate the great job done by most editors of style and design source books. This particular book falls short of the standard set by Asian style gurus like Tan Hock Beng and Barbara Walker.While this book is chock-a-block with professional photos of beautiful objets d'art and of sumptuous east-meets-western-interior-decorator homes, it comes off as an unsorted pile of images; the editorial vision never gets far beyond, "hey, y'all, check out this neat-lookin' stuff!"One way the editor could have improved the flow of this book would have been to devote just one more pair of facing pages to each of the featured homes. Facing pages are used to some advantage to concentrate on one given home, but these photos sometimes seem disjointed together rather than harmonious. And far too much distance is put between the walls and the camera, so while the overall room can be studied, there is often a lack of up-close, detail shots.Positive elements: the traditional Japanese interiors are gorgeous, and there are nice shots showing how objects can be grouped; there are lots of hints on how to work east and west together.Negative elements: three categories of Oriental design and decoration as introduced in the preface are never referred to again; this could have been a way to organize the book! Reader is made to jump from a collection of ornate Chinese and Japanese armoirs (pages 104 - 105), to a variety of Asian bedroom interiors (pages 106 - 107), to 3 rooms of a contemporary Philippines residence (pages 108 - 109). ...it's annoyingly random. There are too many photos of antique shop displays (with overwhelming arrays of objects) with (get this) big price tags on the items, in plain view! If you love the cluttered look, this may not be objectionable, but if you want to see more actual examples of putting a design element to its best advantage, this book won't measure up. I found the examples of western homes using Asian artifacts to be odd, & even sometimes quite insensitive to the beauty of the pieces.To be sure, there are some lovely photos in here, and many of the pieces (individual design elements) are quite nice. I don't doubt that the average reader will find something here to be inspired by. But there is a general lack of order and subtlty, and far too many inappropriate juxtapositions of images on the same page.

This book is described as a sourcebook and that's what it is. It is certainly not an overview of Oriental furniture since the emphasis is on display and design. It is, however, a great book for those who wish to blend in some Oriental furniture in their Western homes.The title may be a bit misleading; the main part of the book concentrates on South-East Asian furniture and not so much on Japanese/Korean styles. Most of the furniture comes from Thailand, Burma and China.For those, like me, who live in that part of the world that is OK. The antiques available in Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong are mostly, in the affordable categories, from these countries.In particular, there is a wealth of Chinese old furniture on the market. And for those who think prices are a problem, forget it. We have picked up many cabinets from Chian around $ 750 and for similar amounts you go to a good furniture shop in BKK and have lovely pieces handmade for you from your own design ideas.Even if you don't live here, but are here on a visit you can easily buy and have it shipped ( we have done it for friends on quite a few occassions). The shipping rates are quite OK and allow you still to pick up some pieces at good prices.For amateurs like me, who simply wish to introduce some Asian elements in their homes this book is very valuable and gives many ideas, not in the least through the many photographs.

The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because I don't give any book five stars unless it's either written by God or David McCullough.I owe soooo much to this book, and its predecessor Epic Content Marketing. These books helped me turn my tiny one-man agency into a global marketing agency because instead of "just writing articles" I leveraged my writing for Forbes into writing for Mashable, TechCrunch, Entrepreneur, and 10 other pubs, started doing video marketing, and when I moved to Shenzhen, China to open our newest office I remembered the part of this book that talked about starting and event series as a form of content marketing and we just made it happen this last weekend with our first event, the China Marketing Summit, which attracted 600 attendees with no website, pretty much just word of mouth marketing, and all in about two months from concept to execution. We billed it a "beta" event and we're now planning on 6,000 attending the main event in July. And no, we don't have tons of cash to do this type of stuff, in fact we only spent a few hundred bucks on the first event. The rest came from ticket sales and sponsors we hustled to get, so the event paid for itself. This first one wasn't profitable (we almost broke even) but the next one we're expecting to be wildly profitable based on what we learned from the first one and how much better set up we are now.Thanks Joe!PS - That guy in the red hoodie in the photo? By following this formula, you have a story to tell that will stand out from the clutter.In a way, it’s so simple that it’s hard to believe that this isn’t the way it’s always done. But so often, brands go into content without any real plan, or if there is a plan, it looks virtually everyone else’s. The strategy recommended here takes you from being a nobody to being a Joe Pulizzi, Michael Stelzner, or Ian Cleary (all whose stories are told in the book).That is the heart of the book, but there is so much more: Leveraging influencers, repurposing, speaking, book writing, monetizing, etc. You’ll find numerous examples of platforms you can use as your content hub or to promote your content. I loved the hype around this book and bought it instantly. I have to say, if you've been in the digital marketing space for a year or more, you won't find anything too ground-breaking in this book. I scanned it for about 5-10 minute when I got it, and then returned it. However, if I had someone who was new to content marketing or digital business enterprises, I would have given it to them. It's still a good book, honestly!It's just not for intermediate level or beyond. Even if you're not a pro, I think you'd read through it and think "I kind of already knew that". Seasoned online entrepreneurs might think, "If you're not using the business model mentioned here, where have you been the last ten years? It's been tribe-building before selling for a very long time."Learning about how to create content--in all its forms--is actually pretty easy. You just have to do it for a while to nail your audience, style, tone, platform channels, etc. You won't be a pro blogger over night, of course. And the technical side isn't all that technical if you get a wordpress plugin like Yoast. As for non-textual content, there are millions of epic tutorials on this. If you want all that conveniently put into one book, this is it. Buy it.

FYI, I listened to this book first. Without question, this is a “must-read” for anyone hoping to gain a competitive advantage via content marketing. Narrated by the author, Pulizzi delivers a comprehensive yet somehow concise guide that will benefit beginners and pros alike. Packed with real-world case histories, Pulizzi’s book also manages to be inspiring, which is critical given the time and effort it takes to build a successful content program.Perhaps the most differentiating idea in Pulizzi’s book is that you should build an audience before you figure out what it is you want to sell them. Certainly this approach turns every other business model on its ear, but he backs it up with a myriad of examples of entrepreneurs who did just that.As final proof of the value of this book — after listening to it a couple of times, I also purchased the hard copy to reference later on.

This is on my wishlist to own! Thank you, Washoe County Library System for carrying this book!It is not an easy book to get through. But if you manage, you find so many diamonds of wisdom to apply to your own life.Which of us has gotten through childhood unscathed? Which of us, as parents, release healthy, unscathed adults into the world? In Alison Bechdel's first memoir, Fun Home, Alison addressed her life with her father. In this book, Alison tells of her life with her mother. I was amazed at how well she was able to keep the story on her own interpretation of her own life. She brings in her therapists and friends and lovers in how they help her understand why certain things happened and how she can get over it and become whole.Though this is done in comic book form it is far from funny. Yet, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, she was able to speak volumes using this method of story telling. It brought my own mother issues to mind while reading this.A spot of vomit on the floor. Running lines with mom for the next play she'll be in. The inability to cry properly. Maybe these things wouldn't cause you cathartic experience, but as you follow Alison's path, which is also her mother's path, it is easy to relate to both women. As Alison calls into play the works of Virginia Wolfe and Freude among others to help her understand how it all fits and how we all fit into our mother's worlds.This book may have triggers for some people but I think that most people will find if they stick it out there are more answers than questions through Ms. Bechdel's story. I recommend it highly to everyone.

A story about a dead parent has a beginning and an end. A story about a living parent is quite a different thing, especially if you know the parent will be reading the story and you're invested in their response. With all that, I am astonished and in awe of Bechdel's courage - not just to reveal herself so intimately, but to do the same for her relationship with her mother.This is not Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic 2. It's much more complicated and diffuse. Bechdel's story about her father felt complete and symmetrical. This is much more distant and intellectual with the trailing off nature inherent to a story about two living people who continue to interact. Again and again we return to the image of Bechdel reading in this book . . . reading books about psychoanalysis, reading old correspondence between her parents, even reading transcripts of telephone conversations between her mother and herself (she would type what her mother was saying during the calls). She relates to her mother through reading and this central image tells us more about the brokenness of the relationship than anything else. Her mother, in return, will tell her about stories she reads in the New York Times that make her point instead of saying directly what it is she wants to say. There is little that is tactile or intimate about their relationship. The reader winds up thinking their way through the book in the same way that Bechdel has thought through her relationship with her mother.In Fun Home, Bechdel used literature, concepts of sexual identity, and even mythology to explore and illuminate her relationship with her father. In this book, despite the forays into the work of Virginia Woolf (which, while interesting, seem to fit least easily into what is going on), she uses mainly the language and insights of psychoanalysis and therapy to explore the ways in which her mother has hurt and empowered her. And while this book lacks none of the detailed hyperfocus on her own particular past that one would expect, it comes across as a much more universal story than Fun Home . . . about the ways in which our mothers, in general, hurt and empower us - even if the specifics of our relationships with our mothers vary from hers.Despite Bechdel's willingness to dig deep into her own emotions, the intellectualized nature of her relationship with her mother kept me at a distance for most of the book. The book engaged my brain quite deeply (there are a few exceptions that are moving, such as the scene about midway through the book when, as a young woman, she hangs up on her mother during a telephone conversation). Then, in the last few pages, it felt as if everything came together emotionally and I was moved to tears. Rather than being a deficiency in the book, I feel as if this was close to what she must have intended. To think, and think, and think . . . and then suddenly to feel so intensely.What a gift.

When you purchase this on kindle, there is a cryptic message that says it includes ComiXology, but it doesn't really explain what it is. It doesn't give you the choice to decline. Finally I figured out that ComiXology is an app that is supposed to enhance viewing of comic books. You can also read this book on Kindle. After downloading the ComiXology app on my tablet, I discovered that many of the scenes don't actually show up. Only certain colors or lines appear. (see attached photo)I love the book and the illustrations, but do not like ComiXology. My review would be 5 stars if ComiXology worked, or if I had the option to just purchase the kindle version.

Once I read the product description I was concerned that it would be too depressing however now that I've read it, while it's retrospective and there is a sense of melancholy it's so beautifully written and realistic that as the reader you feel mesmerised by the narrative and feel utterly compelled to understand the Tangle family. This family has a tragic secret that no one will talk about, not uncommon for that period in time. Having resided on the idealism of Martha's Vineyard everything is kept private and quiet. The past affects the present and the story jumps back and forth between the two time periods to help give the reader context.This story is a drama about a dysfunctional family who's lives tailspin after a tragedy. It's primarily told through the life and memories of the eldest daughter, Ginger. At times confronting, due to the inner turmoil you are waiting for things to unravel, and unravel they do. There are many twists and emotions run high. This story is one of mothers, daughters and sisters and really proves that you can never escape your family.I love how the characters unfolded and enabled me to understand why they are the way they are. Our pasts definitely shape us and have a profound effect on how we deal with things later in life. I am delighted I picked this book, it will make me think for days. 4.5 stars.

This book draws you in from the very beginning and makes it impossible to put down. Makes you laugh & cry. Only dislike is the ending, leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

For a lot of this book, I just wasn't crazy about it. I thought it would be a book about a close knit group of sisters and I just didn't get that impression. For the first 2/3 of the book, the author goes back & forth between present and past.Ginger, one of the sisters, is portrayed as a sweet child. One that is very conscientious and wanting to please her parents. As an adult, I feel she is prtrayed as a pain in the tush who kind of scares her daughter and almost her husband away.Another sister, Mimi, I saw as kind of a typical teen who almost becomes like an uptight "soccer mom", but yet always complains that Ginger is too uptight & worrisome.The third and youngest sister, Callie, just seems carefree as a child. One that Mimi & Ginger look after. She does develop a quirk of wondering even out of school, but it seems as if it's just part of her personality. The family does suffer a majot tragedy that Callie is directly involved in so later on you realize her personality is actually a direct complication of the accident she was in.Glory is their mother and always seems like she is just out for herself. She seems as if she is bothered by her kids and doesn't necessarily always get along with her husband who tries his best to hold his family together and ultimately make Glory happy.The last third of the book I enjoyed much more and felt it redeemed the book. I lot more is explained and some confusing family issues are realized for what they truly are. Without giving too much away, I am happy for Ginger, who is the primary character, and how things are resolved for her.

I'm not sure what to say because I really didn't enjoy this book. It's a story about a family's life - so not much action. There's plenty of emotion and soul searching and characters trying to do the right thing without knowing what the right thing is. It's a genre I don't enjoy, but if you do, I recommend this book. It is well written and the characters are well developed. You understand them and their motivations and weaknesses. There's some unresolved issues, too, similar to real life because much of the story takes place when the characters are children. Memories are fuzzy and perspectives are different for each child. If you're looking for a book that forces you to think, this will do it. If you're looking for a book to entertain and distract you from real life, this isn't the book.

Not your typical dysfunctional family, but for those of us who come from them there is no such thing as typical. I saw it as 3 sisters, each with her own unique survivor mechanisms for dealing with a very narcissistic, out of touch with reality mother and a father who's main function was to provide for the family, not much else. Each sister has her own role in the family dynamic and when tragedy strikes they each have their own ways of dealing with it. Very interesting family psychology with well developed characters through out...

This storyline is a little different but that is part of what makes it a good book. I come from a family of three sisters and some of the same characteristics ring true. But that is where the similarities end. The Mother is all about keeping up with the Clarkes that lived next door and had a house on Martha's Vineyard. This story gives back and forth between what happened when the sisters were young and what is going on in their lives now. At first this is a little confusing but once you realize that's what is going on, it is easier to follow. I don't want to get a lot into the story because it will be easy to spoil it. I absolutely loved perusing and reading through this new book! As a former New Yorker and having grown up going to a Southhampton "cottage" I was intrigued to purchase the latest picturesque treasure, by the talented Ms. Rudick. - I very much enjoyed her other book Palm Beach Chic and for those of you who may not know - her talents also delve into the world of film - having taken the documentary world by storm with her production of "Iris." Jennifer's gift of educating her readers (in this case me) is a welcome respite to what we think we already know about the Hamptons. There is so much more to learn indeed, as this lovely coffee table book - an ornament in its self, is a must have! I so enjoyed learning historical facts that I never even knew existed and seeing a few homes of people I have encountered (or known) in my past whom are discreet, elegant and have a discerning taste. The work of photographer, Tria Giovan is marvelous... I would highly recommend this as a hostess present or to anyone, like myself, who has not visited for ages and who wishes to learn about a timeless location, well before the current day Instagram personalities and paparazzi took over what has always been a charming and enchanting place....Brava!

Good looking take, with variety

Disappointed that I paid this much money for a boring photographed collection of homes. From the cover, it had promises to be a beautiful book.
