I can't fully express my happiness with this book. The pictures are stunning, the artist's style is fantastic and she's not afraid to use some bright, vibrant colors. The step by step lessons are also extremely helpful and she takes the time to explain, in detail, how shadowing works and how to create a well-balanced painting. If I had to find fault with the book, it would be that she sometimes seems to skip steps, but I actually like this because it gives me the chance to figure out how she created the look or to create one of my own.

I looked at it in a store before buying - so I knew I'd love it - but it has excellent descriptions and tons of paintings. If you are a new artist with the ability to paint and just need a little guidance this is great. It covers the basics of colors and shadings, brush, canvas, and paint options, and techniques. After that - its not a super basic step by step, but each painting is broken down into three stages with great tips - like "water reflects directly below the object", no matter what - and "in this painting - the sun is coming from the left, so the right sides of the mountains should be darker"

This is more useful than any other book for this level that I have seen. Most go straight from materials to the step-by-steps, but the bulk of this book is in techniques and exercises. I like it, I think I'll check out some of the author's other acrylics books. Recommended for beginners or those first branching into landscapes.

Lee Hammond offers the most down to earth and simple explanations I've found, non pretentious and I really appreciate that. When she explained the 'awkward' stage it was a real validation for me...I use her phrase often when I'm teaching my ceramic class too. People expect to lay down one coat of paint and it be beautiful..I tell them you have to get through the awkward stage then it will come just like when I paint on canvas or watercolor paper...

This book has many lessons teaching basic techniques for painting the things that go into a landscape picture.Trees, water, mountains, rocks,bushes, sky, clouds,flowers, etc. Good instruction on color mixing and the use of color and shading.There is basic description on brushes and their use.The demonstrations lead the reader/painter in the process of creating the finished picture.A very good book for a beginning painter.

I really appreciate the time that Lee Hammond has taken to teach people like me how to be an artist. She is very thorough in her teaching. If you follow her advice and directions, then you will walk away a better artist. I have three of her books. I have found that she is truly a great artist and she has a lot to teach. I would highly advise anyone wanting some or more training in drawing and painting to invest your money and time in learning from Lee Hammond. I know you will walk away knowing how to draw and how to paint. I really love Lee's artwork. I have always thought if you want to learn how to do something new then you should find someone who is professional at what you want to learn and learn from them. Lee Hammond is just that, a professional artist. You can only win in your efforts in learning from Lee Hammond.

I bought about 6 books on painting landscape, wanted different perspectives. Her technics and color schemes are beautiful. I am still study her processes love her results in the book, hopefully, I will be able to have similar results.

I'll say that my own review of "Out of the Pocket" was influenced by a review posted here by Zach - a gay high school athlete whose own take on this book was really interesting and helpful for me.This YA novel about Bobby Framingham, a star high school quarterback coming out and dealing with the consequences, is refreshingly different from many I've read. It does not focus on a romance - although there is one suggested. I was so pleased that it is totally PG rated (except for the general disgusting behavior of teenage boys).This book gets you inside the head of a really good kid - who is a star and popular and all that - but not full of himself; truly a gentle, caring thoughtful young man. His personal efforts to embrace his gay self are turned upside down in a plot twist that felt very real for me, as painful as it was. This betrayal throws Bobby off track, as he watches his perfect ordered world begin to crumble.I love YA books where families matter - and Bobby's complicated relationship with his parents is excellently drawn, and becomes one of the several catalysts in the book's ongoing narrative. But his relationships with his friends - the devotion of sports teams to each other and their coach; his friendship with Carrie, the girl who - in a typical world - would have been his girlfriend; are what make this book feel so authentic.What is really appealing to me about this book is that it's all about Bobby - whatever else is happening around him, we learn about how everything touches and changes him - his thinking, his behavior, his perspective on the world. We feel his pain and confusion; we share in his happiness and growing maturity.Do read Zach's three-star review - it's a positive review, but offers insights that, as an old gay man (in spite of my two teenagers at home) I cannot. But read the book. It's worth it.

Today I want to recommend a book that is really amazing: Out of the Pocket by Bill Konigsberg.Out of the PocketQuotes are in (brackets)Bobby Framingham is the star quarterback at the Durango High School football team, extremely talented and nobody has a doubt he'll be a successful pro one day. He has nice parents, friends and teammates and everything would be wonderful - if he didn't know he is different in a way that might destroy everything he's living for and dreaming about: Bobby is gay.Bill Konigsberg has written a novel about coming of age and coming out that is far more than the typical "I'm gay and unfortunately I'm a brilliant jock as well" story.There are no parents who disown their son, no coaches who threaten to kick him out of the team, no long term friends who kick his butt when he tells them. And most of the teammates are ok with it as well. It is a story that describes in an often funny, touching and very compelling way that being gay is still trouble - even when you are supported by most of the people you care for. You still are isolated at a point and have the feeling everything is too much to bear.Not because everybody turns against Bobby but mainly because it still is a big thing when a young man - a star quarterback by all means! - is discovered to be gay. Bobby is drawn into focus, whether he likes it or not.What makes this story so unique is the subtle changes between Bobby and all the people who are his friends, family and teammates. Yes, there are some who aren't cool with it, but most of them can handle it. But nonetheless being gay changes the attitude between Booby and everybody he knows. And if it is only the time people need to come to terms with the news: It hurts and Bobby feels utterly alone. Not only pure hatred and big drama but also this "gay thing " at all being such an issue is hurting and out of place. Konigsberg shows this masterfully all the time i.e. with a scene, when Bobby is interviewed after a game:(The reporters were silent. Maybe what I'd said wasn't what they'd expected, I don't know. The same guy who had asked me before the game about being a gay quarterback spoke."So how was it, being openly gay and quarterbacking a team to the championship game?"In the ensuing silence, I could feel the tension. First lines for newspaper stories across the area and even the country were being devised as I spoke."I don't know. Sort of being an openly straight quarterback, but with a lot more media attention on me, " I said.)Not only the plot but especially the characters make this story so outstanding and vivid. Every friend, Bobby's parents, the coach: The depth of them is amazing, everybody is an individual, you can tell who "speaks" just by the different phrasing Konigsberg uses for all of them.As a woman I especially appreciated the women appearing: His mother who isn't described stereotyping at all: She neither is the mother hen supporting Bobby as much as she should nor is she the dragon who drives her son out of the house as soon as she finds out he is gay. She is a warm, caring person but still has troubles to get used to a gay son. And considering all circumstances you can understand it, you know why she is troubled, fearful and yet loves her son unconditionally.And there is Carrie: Adorable, funny, big mouthed Carrie, who everybody considers to be Bobby's girlfriend, though they never really dated. At the very beginning of the book - Bobby isn't out yet - they meet in their favorite diner and Carrie starts to discuss their relationship.(She started talking loudly about her virginity."It's still here," she said, wrapping strands of her dark hair around her index finger. "And it doesn't want to be. It wants to move to Hawaii and retire, drink pina coladas under a palm tree, and get catered to by muscular Samoan boys in short shorts.") Have you ever read an announcement: "Hey, I want to have sex" that was more hilarious? I haven't by a long shot. And one of my favorites:(Carrie was there. She hated football but sometimes she came to my games. She came up behind me and placed her chin on my neck. "That was one of the finest basketball games I've ever seen," she said. I turned to her and smirked."Hockey," I corrected."Look, I may be white, but the name-calling is totally out of place," she said, kissing me on the cheek and heading out toward her car. She's so weird. I love her.)So everything about this book is amazing, a book I wasn't able to put down and stop reading before I reached the very end. In case you understand anything about football you might enjoy the book even more, I'm sure I missed some metaphores because I don't know anything about football besides the quarterback must be some really important guy for this game and that being in the pocket seems to be safer than being out of the pocket.I hope Mr. Konigsberg will publish another book soon.Just for the record: I'm not alone judging this book to be a very great one: Out of the Pocket won the Lambda Literary Award 2009.

Out of the Pocket tells the inspiring tale of self discovery and coming of age of the 17 year old Bobby Framingham, a senior quarterback.The other reviews described the story pretty good - so here my thoughts on the book itself.It is wonderful written with such a care and love for the details of the characters that it draws you in and never lets you go. The books describes the journey of young Bobby on the way into adulthood. Combined with the discovery of his sexuality and how he wants to live his life as a gay man - inside a non-gay-football-community, especially after some unexpected turnarounds happen in his young life.The author captures the main characters with a perfect sense of wonder, amazement, fear, respect and self-awareness that one is simply stunned with care and compassion for Bobby. You will fell the angst of him in many aspects, as well as the joy of life.You will like this book if you enjoy a great coming of age (as a gay man) story, without any judgment. There is no sex in the book, just cuddling and a bit kissing. Their is a small romance, but it is not the main story - and that is good. The book is about oneself and how one looks at the world. You might look at it different, after reading this book.I've really enjoyed it and truly hope to read more about Bobby in the future.

Never read, but it was a gift for a friend who's hobby is into collecting vinyl records. He said it was his favorite Christmas present.

A magnificent book! Absolutely beautiful, and so resonant, so enlightening - I love it.

An amazing view on why physical, analog music is so important in today’s, yesterday’s and tomorrow’s society.

Some of the folks interviewed I found very interesting, but after awhile I found myself skipping through quite a few, since I couldn't relate to them. Maybe if this book had more interviews with musicians and others that I find relevant to me I would have enjoyed it more. The overall message is there though. It wasn't a blockbuster for me, but I'm sure tons of others will really enjoy the whole read.

"Edison's wax cylinders ... dominated the marketplace, until the early 20th century when Emile Berliner developed discs cut by lasers in an attempt to usurp the wax format"-from the introduction.I like the book, and the interviews are great, but the author expects us to believe that in the early 1900's the first disc-shaped Victrola records were cut by laser technology that didn't exist until the 60's? Hmmm....If you want people to talk about how much vinyl means to them, this is your book. If you want something that analyzes records as historical and cultural phenomena, it isn't.

I have really enjoyed this series. I can't really write anything about this book because I didn't really see what was coming until it hit me! I felt stupid that I didn't see it! But, it was perfect! A great lesson from the author! Now, I want more and can't wait to see Savenek's story!

I've been anxiously awaiting book 3 in this series. Book 2, Cage of Darkness was absolutely fantastic. I loved the dark turn it took. Book 3 picks up right where CoD left off. I was on the edge of my seat reading this book. Although it didn't have the darker tone that I love, I enjoyed the twists and turns! I look forward to reading anything Jennifer Anne Davis writes!

A fitting conclusion. I do wish it would have went more into the relationship with Kerdan though. Excellent writing, so much so that I actually purchased the whole series. I don't do that except once a year and 500 books read. Love this story and happy that it ended this way.

I stumbled upon the precursor series to this one via Amazon recommendations, and with no expectations, loved it far more than similar series I had been reading. I started the Reign of Secrets series, and liked the first book enough to purchase the second, which I thought was okay, but this one was great!I feel like I saw the growth in our main character here more than in the second book, which is why I didn't like the second one as much. I felt like Allyssa really comes into her own in this book, and really starts to heal from everything she's been through. This book also focused much more on some of my favorite characters from the original series - Darmik and Nathenek - which was pretty much worth the 4 stars right there.Favorite parts - Darmik as a father. I loved all of the parts with him giving Allyssa advice, and being protective when Kerdan shows a romantic interest in her. The scene where he walks in on them in her room had me cracking up. Her embarrassment at having to talk with Darmik about who she should marry/if she was in love/ was awesomely awkward! I actually appreciated his story more than Rema's in the original series, so having him such a large part of this one was awesome. I got more Darmik and Neco playing off of each other, too, which is always entertaining. Nathanek's general sarcasm and laying down the law with Allyssa was also great.I love that Allyssa is resourceful, but obviously not the end all and be all fighter. Other similar series usually have the female heroine as some exceptional fighting machine who, as a teenager, is inexplicably the best person alive for whatever has to be done. That always feels unrealistic to me. (Though to be fair, I'm not a teenager, who is likely the target audience). At the same time, Allyssa could hold her own, and wasn't afraid to try and escape, or fight or whatever it was she needed to do. She wasn't always successful, and I like that in my heroines.The book before this did get pretty dark, and Allyssa deals with the aftermath of that here. This time though, her feelings and thoughts about things made sense, which I was missing in the last installment. Maybe her thinking being all of the place was supposed to reflect all of the really horrible things that happened to her, but I didn't feel like I had enough development for her to all do some of the dark deeds she does at the end of Book 2. This time, I feel like I got the development of thinking and weighing her choices that I needed before.There was also some good realism in her confused feelings about both Kerdan and Odar, which is pretty true to life. I appreciated that she really had two very different choices in both Odar and Kerdan, but picked the one who would let her be true to herself, even if she had more intense feelings for the other. I thought at the end that she wouldn't choose either of them, which I kind of wish she wouldn't have, because that would been different and empowering than what you usually see in this kind of story, but the fact that it was even mentioned and she considers it was appreciated.Kerdan was great here. I love how much he unintentionally made Darmik mad. He is one of the more interesting characters of the series, who I wasn't super on board with in the last book, but grew to love this time around.Why not 5 Stars? -Seriously, Darmik goes from being super relieved and happy she's alive after he had been told she was dead, but then plans to use her as bait against the enemy that she barely escaped from in the first place. Characters who didn't trust easily trusted too easily, and for the emphasis on how many millions of backup plans should be had, a lot of stuff goes down that doesn't seem to have been well-thought out. I had a hard time suspending my belief sometimes on those counts. Allyssa continues to be as impulsively reckless as usual, which is the thing that annoys me about her character, but we all have flaws, right? Some of the expressions and very little of the dialogue were sometimes awkward, but overall, the characters are sharp and witty, which is a prerequisite for me with good characters. I guess I like sarcasm.So basically, after the first two books in this series, I liked it, but didn't love it like I did the True Reign series. But I loved this, and read it in two sittings - one of them way past my bedtime, so I obviously enjoyed it. Best installment in this series, and I'm really excited to see things from twin brother's point of view next.

I enjoy this series and the different character dynamics. I would really like to see a few areas written a little more in depth to follow what protocol would have required for the time period. Most who will read this book will probably not notice the subtle differences. All in all it was an enjoyable read and I will continue to read the series. Editing is superb and the storyline is not the type you have the book figured out right away.Ms. Davis is a true professional.

The Cage of Destiny series is one of my favorites and am so glad that I happened upon it. There have been only a few book series that I had to buy the next book as soon as I finished reading the one before it - although the author clearly warns you in the prologue about that...All 3 books in this series are well written, exciting, thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable.

I didn't think the second book in the series could be as good as the first book in the series. But I was wrong. What a ride! The adventures kept be breathless. I didn't want the book to end and when it did I thought once again, no way can the third book top the first and second in the series. Again I was wrong. Fabulous tell full of adventure, intrigue, and romance. Everything a great series should be about.I highly recommend the series!

I loved both of these series. Im' so glad she picked the right prince. I can't wait for the next one. Hopefully the story will be about her twin brother
