Phileena begins her book with:“So, come with me as we explore these touchstones of contemplative spirituality: Withdrawing to Engage, Finding Liberation by Discernment, Discovering Darkness Is Light, Exploring a Deep Well, Dying for Life, Unknowing to Know.” Phileena explores these topics in six different chapters.“You’ll be guided and supported not only by me but by these prominent wisdom teachers within the Christian tradition: Thomas Merton, Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, Clare of Assisi, Mother Teresa, and the fourteenth-century anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing.” Each chapter includes a wise past or more contemporary guide for your journey.“Let me encourage you to engage in each of the practices at the end of the chapters: breath prayer, the prayer of examen, lectio divina, labyrinth, the welcoming prayer, and centering prayer.” At the conclusion of each chapter a contemplative practice is presented for the reader to learn and further explore.Let me share eight key points that I pulled from this wonderful book.True Self“Remember, the contemplative tradition has one main objective: the deconstruction of the self.”“Who are you? What external forces shape your identity? In what ways do you feel trapped inside a self that’s not the truest you?”“This is where the greatest meaning in life is found—in the freedom to let go of who we think we are. When we let go, we are brought into alignment with the divine will, so that in union with God we might make the world a better place.”Who are you? We are not our thoughts. We are not who our families, friends, community and employers tell you us we are. Something wonderful happens when we continue a daily contemplative practice. We let go of who we think we are and who we think we need to be. We rest in the rest of God. We let God shape and mold us into the person God intends us to be: our true self.Loved, Safe, No Need To Fear“Like many good-hearted religious people of Jesus’ day, we too often fail to get the good news that Jesus is trying to communicate—essentially, that we are loved, safe, and have no need to fear.“God unconditionally loves us. Unfortunately, too many people do not believe this. The thought of sitting in silence with God is terrifying. It is in the silence that many painful thoughts deep within us begin to flow out. If we give it time, this same silence that once terrified us can become a silence that fills us with God’s love. (God’s love was always within us, we just did not realize it.) We begin to feel more and more God’s beloved child.Contemplative Prayer And Social Action“Contemplative prayer and social action must go hand in hand for effective social change. Otherwise our social action will too often end up being our imperfect will imposed on the world.”“In time, by withdrawing a few times a day for contemplative prayer, I realized that solitude was not a disconnection from the rest of the world but instead a necessary recalibration for more meaningful connection with the world.”“Over time, as we engage in contemplative practice, we become less self-absorbed and able to be of greater service to others.”We need a balance of prayer and action. Our times of prayer prepare us for our times of action. Silence teaches us who we are. Silence provides inner wisdom. Silence teaches us when to be silent and when to take no action. (Did you ever later regret something you said or did?) Silence teaches us that sometimes someone else, not us, is better suited for the action.Divine Alignment“When we are rooted in the ground of being and aligned with the heart of existence, there’s a different source of energy flowing through us.”“Through contemplative prayer we get in the flow of what God is already doing in and through us. It’s less about our effort and more about our alignment with the divine.”“When we’re grounded in love we are less likely to burn out, because love is directing our action, rather than unconscious, distorted motivations.“It is a paradox. We do not need to work harder to get more done. I have found that silence teaches me how to work with a calm intensity and at the same time be even more productive. Silence seems to gift me with wisdom for my daily tasks.Cooperation“Consider whatever physical, emotional, or mental challenges you may be facing, and let go of being in control. It’s not about being perfectly well or perfectly physically fit. God is at work in you and through you—even in your limitations. All that is required of you is cooperation with what is.“We must cooperate with God where we are at. In mid December, I began to experience pains in my hip, lower back and down my right leg into my foot. I went to the Chiropractor. There was no improvement. I went to an orthopedic doctor. The doctor prescribed a dose of steroids and sent me to physical therapy. Finally, some 2 1/2 months later I feel better. The pain has dissipated. The lesson I learned was that I must continue with my life. As Phileena mentions I found that God continued to work in and through me and I continued to cooperate with what was my situation.Dark Night“Gradually, through the mysterious season of darkness, God excavates our interior landscape, uprooting the layers of imperfections that keep us from fully cooperating with God in our world.”At one time or another you will probably experience a dark night of the soul. It is during this time that you will be challenged to operate by pure faith. You must continue to come back to your silent sit despite a feeling that God is absent. God is not absent and is still at work within you!Fruits“I am resolved to be free of fear, to be unafraid. To boldly and humbly live this one wild and precious life I’ve been given.”“You are stronger and more resilient than you realize.”Silence transforms us! Silence teaches me that even if I am afraid, I still need to take action and move forward. My barometer is if it excites me and it is an action that will not harm me or others, then I should move forward. Fear is never a reason not to move out of my comfort zone. This is how I grow. This is how I continue to become the person God intends me to be.Next Steps“The more of us who commit to the contemplative path—the path of seeing, observing, and taking responsibility for our life through meditative practice—the more possible it will be to experience God’s presence in the center of our being. From that center, we can build the world we all want to live in.”The contemplative path helps us open to and connect with the presence of God within. We rest in the rest of God’s love and naturally want to take this love into the world and serve others. When we do this, we continue to make the world a better place to live in for everyone.I encourage you to check out Phileena’s book, Mindful Silence!Rich LewisSilenceTeaches.com

Such a great book. Every chapter has a contemplative prayer for you to use which is awesome for a newbie like me

With a voice so sweet, tender, wise and healing, Phileena shares her wisdom and love with us through this book. She shows us the ability to be present through the practices of Solitude, Silence and Stillness in this world of deep pain. With her work through both Gravity Center and the words on these pages, she holds space for our brokenness, uncertainty, pain, anger, and all of life’s heaviness. Phileena teaches us how to embrace our true selves. She teaches us how to truly see ourselves for what we are and to take our pain and transform it into healing ourselves and the world.Give yourself a gift: read this book, learn these practices, not only because you need to, but because the world needs you to.

I loved this book. It is such a great resource for people curious about or new to the contemplative tradition - deep and beautiful and full of wonderful stories and also accessible and gentle. It doesn’t assume previous knowledge of contemplative practices and introduces the reader to several along the way. But, longtime contemplatives will also love it and be reminded of the tenderness of discovering a deeper way to know and be known. I have already recommended it to several clients and friends. The author’s first book, “Pilgrimage of a Soul,” is also a worthwhile read.

The author was both instructive and transparent which made the good so very engaging. I am recommending it to our staff and to friends who are ready to go deeper and add some new tools to their inner lives that can spill out to others. Thank you Phileena for sharing your life, knowledge and being helpful to us the readers.

This book is so refreshing. Deeper than rules. We are all one.....ALL. God is Love.

clear, deep and lovely -phileena nails it once again. a true believer and ambassador of the contemplative movement. so worth the read and a delight in person.

The word “Christian” in the title drew me because I often find that spiritual direction and silence and solitude bring with it resources other than the Bible or in addition to the Bible and I just want Bible to the main vein flowing through all direction. This book leans more on Catholicism than on Protestantism. She has a sentence that says: “All great religions…” after she mentions Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam with Christianity tagged on at the end… This is very early on in the book. This book has the potential to lead us down a path we don’t want to go down. There are 2 ways to use Scripture: one is to use Scripture to support what you are trying to say and the other is to have Scripture support itself. I read this book and noticed in quite a few areas that the author's source of truth is other than Scripture as her main source and she pulls from many people and religions/sources that are even to the extent of anti-Christ. When you choose to add these types of people into your spiritual life you are saying that what these people have to offer is equal to the Truth you might find in the Words of Jesus. As one would say after reading Galatians 1:6-10 there is no other gospel. These other individuals would say that there is another gospel apart from Christ, John 14:6. The very essence of Colossians is Jesus plus anything is no longer the Gospel. We are complete in Christ. Colossians 2:8 gives us the warning to be sure everything is according to Christ. If you choose to read this just know that you need to be on guard against statements that would lead you to belief in other viewpoints than Christianity.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I think the examples are poor. The mane is black. How many kids these days know what a mane is. And half the horses head is cut off so it's not even that easy for kids who are not around horses...... Page 16.....the five is on the kite......actually the five is next to the kite. Another page 22, the home is yellow, page 24 the home is green. I see what they're doing with cube/tube tub/tube etc ...but......I think this is a sad little book. Beet/feet....again seed/weed.....the pictures are poor representations. I may be able to use parts of it. This is my 4th book purchase to help tutor 1st graders......not at all up to the standard of the other books I've purchased. Page 37 toe and tie pictures......really... for 1st graders to recognize an oblong hanging from a little piece of a collar. When there are so many images in the world, and this is what is picked to use ?My first and last purchase of an Educators Publishing Service product.

I have been teaching for 20 years. I used the Primary Phonics series with my son. I use it any time I have a student who is unable to read after having the district approved reading series...whatever that may be. I like the way the children can be successful. I also like the way it makes the children think. I especially like that after a little bit of explanation, a child can do the work independently. This is great when I do groups. I usually buy the first three Primary Phonics Workbooks together. That way, I do not have the problem that the red book was easy and done quickly and NOW we have to wait for the second book. Also, some children have enough knowledge that they can start with book 2 or book 3.

Excellent workbook for 1st grade phonics. Pages have a list of words that are seen, said and written (on a line with a picture). This is the 2nd in a series of 6. This one is equipped with several pages of each of the long vowel words (a-e ,e-e, o-e, i-e, u-e). Other pages have these same words, but in sentence format to print or to answer questions. One of the best I have used with students.

Amazon review EPS workbook 2In thirty years of using the EPS system to help children learn to read I have never found another as effective as this one. Not even close. These EPS readers and workbooks introduce phonics concepts in a progression that is logical and truly consistent. They give the children plenty of practice as new letter combinations are added. This second set of readers and workbook introduce long vowel words. The readers that go with it stick to a limited set of long vowel words but Barbara Makar was amazingly creative with this limited vocabulary.

Since schools have drifted away from phonics I love this workbook. They have the readers that go with each work book. Start with the consonant book and then get workbook 1 and 2. The consonant book allows kid to look at a picture and fill in the first sound. Gradually difficulty is increased. Book 1 works mostly on short vowels and book 2 works mostly on long vowels. After workbook 2, unless your child is stuggling with reading - probably more fun books to read. Also nice because kids can work independently on books.

Used in conjunction with the reader books, these are very helpful for teaching reading. Simple, direct, not too difficult for 3-5 year-olds ready to learn reading. Highly recommended!

I've successfully raised two literate 4 year olds thanks to Primary Phonics. I love its no frills, no gimmicks, old-fashioned approach. Kids are actually READING, not memorizing sight words. I recommend this series to everyone who asks how I taught my kids to read so early.

Necessary when reading the books because it helps to emphasize the words they are learning.

The A.D.D. Nutrition Solution: A Drug-Free 30 Day Plan

From Library Journal

Nutrition-based therapies have been used effectively to treat a wide variety of health problems, ranging from PMS to cancer. In this helpful guide, clinical nutritionist Zimmerman discusses how diet therapy can provide long-term relief and even a cure for attention deficit disorder (ADD). During the past decade, the use of Ritalin, the drug most commonly prescribed for ADD, has risen 600 percent, but its effects are temporary and possibly harmful. Zimmerman's program for getting off medication involves eliminating allergic foods, additives, pollutants, and harmful fats and instead focusing on unprocessed, nutrient-rich meals supplemented with fatty acids, minerals, and vitamin co-enzymes. Her 30-day plan provides food charts and recipe ideas. This effective, natural approach, based on extensive research on the link between diet and brain function, will be greatly appreciated by parents of children diagnosed with ADD. Highly recommended for public libraries.AIlse Heidmann, San Marcos, TX Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Zimmerman prefers the term attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) to attention deficit disorder (ADD). The teacher and nutritional biochemist posits prevention as the first priority in dealing with AD/HD, but once it is manifest, the most effective approach is to treat causes rather than symptoms--and Ritalin, she believes, is a symptom reliever rather than a treater. She discusses the various causes and stresses the importance of a carefully worked out diagnosis. Once that is reached, treatment can proceed realistically. Proper management of the child's activities and attitudes at home and at school is vital. Suitable foods, attractively prepared and presented, constitute the main element in her program, and she counsels sitting down, relaxing, and chewing at meals. Sugar is dangerous, the widely touted olestra can be troublesome, and even optimal regular nutrition needs supplements, so Zimmerman helpfully details acceptable and unacceptable supplements. The informative book is itself supplemented by lists of AD/HD-provoking additives, sources of appropriate foods and supplements, and resources for further information. William Beatty

We were living overseas and could not do all the supplements that were recommended by the author, but by following the diet plan which involved removing all possible food sources of ADD for 30 days, then slowly adding back each one bit by bit we found out what triggered my son's ADD. We could then avoid those food additives. What was amazing to me was that after we had been on the 30 day cleansing diet my son described how his brain was working better and the way he described it as a ten year old was a child's description of what the author had explained was happening. This book was literally a Godsend for us. I cannot recommend it highly enough. As a PS I would also add that if you can only add one supplement to your diet I would recommend omega-3 fatty acids. It is the critical nutritional supplement for the brain and memory. The best way to get this is with cold-pressed flax oil. Harder to get and more expensive than fish oil, but seems to work better. I personally was using it for something else and then found my own memory was tremendously better. (My son literally thought I was getting Alzheimers before I started). I put it in my morning smoothie. It should not be heated for cooking. Do not use Gingo Biloba in a child, it causes headaches and I found this out the hard way when I took some myself to help my own memory. I had been giving this to my son before I read the book because I had heard it helped with memory.

My friend really enjoyed it as they are trying to avoid drugs.

A good resource for a parent of a child with ADHD, but not necessarily an easy read.. provides more of a straight forward opinion, as opposed to providing many or multiple options on how to best serve your own child.

AAA+++

Ok

this book was a big help in coming up with our food options. we have seen behavior changes and now can see what effects our son

Didn't really help me. I only found a few things useful which I saw in my 2017 Earth Science Regents

Useful

My daughter has complained many times about not fully understanding her earth science teacher when she taught lessons. But when she used this, she got a very nice score on the regents as well as in the last marking period of the class.

Excellent source of Regent preparation.

My daughter's teacher does not recommend this book. It is outdated. We bought it just to have another reference.

This book is great. I used if for my first child when we were traveling and I had to homeschool him during that time. All the while, I knew we'd return and he had to immediately sit for the Regents Earth Science. This book coupled with a whole load of practice exams, which are available online, were amazing. There is a practicum section of the exam and this book told us exactly how to go about the practicum--the three things to bear in mind. He scored well on the exam, despite mom teaching him. I never took this material myself. I just used the book. The bad rating, below, is because the user didn't realize that this was for NY State, apparently. Not sure if that counts as worth 1 star.

This was a review for the State of New York. If you were teaching New York geography and Earth Science it might be good. A waist of time and money.

the ratings are low, not sure what to trust here

I live in the Philippines 1 to 2 years at a time. I always take a travel guide with me and Lonely Planet is as good as any I have ordered over the years. One thing I have found that what ever guide you have it will not have the most accurate information. As soon as it is published some information will be inaccurate. Especially when it comes to public transportation which changes almost daily. This guide as well as others should only be used to give you basic information on where to go and what to see as you travel. Addresses of shopping centers, hotels, terminals and eating establishments etc can be relied upon. However, rates, time tables, festival dates change frequently. Just do not be alarmed if when you get there the travel guide is out of date. So no matter if you have a new edition or one a few years old it will be worth the price to carry along. Just go with the changes, you can't do anything about it anyway and have a good time. Do not be in rush! The Philippines is a beautiful and most enjoyable place to visit and the Filipino people greet you with a warm welcome.

Unlike some other reviewers, I don't think the travel warnings should be suppressed. Yes these things happen rarely, but better safe than sorry! The Philippines are a very friendly country but let's not forget there are rebels in Mindanao and guerillas (even though almost inactive) on Luzon, not to mention the high crime rates in the big cities, especially Manila - and Lonely Planet as usually does excellent job warning about all of these. The locals I was talking to confirmed all the information. It looks though like except for the travel warnings this guide is not updated frequently. A small example: it claims that the voltage in Baguio City is 110V while it looks like they switched to the countrywide standard when the US military has left, 15 years ago.

Bought this edition on Amazon to plan trip to the PI, borrowed the Jens Peters' book and the Rough Guide from the library. Jens Peters' is great if you're visiting the country for months or plan on living there because it is quite comprehensive and detailed. I'll probably buy it if I retire there or for relatives who are already living there. Overall, I wished I bought the Rough Guide instead. It reads better and more informative on places I want to visit. There were more options on lodgings and sights to see, etc. I second the criticisms on the LP posted by other readers. I was able to peruse an old version of the Moon Guide at the library and it is so much better than LP or RG and looking forward to a newer edition.

It is alright but the Philippines Travel Guide by Jens Peters is way better.

Here's the problem with this book(And I don't know if it's the book or my Kindle): They've replaced all the prices in the book with links that say "Click Here". When you click on the links they all take you to something totally irrelevant. For example, if I click on a link about the price of the zipline in Davao it takes me to a map of Bacolod.. Other than that the book is fine and helps me a lot.The links that are actually typed out in URL form actually do work..

Bought this for my brother.

I downloaded the Kindle version of this book to take to the Philippines. The content may have been ok but navigation through this book was difficult - the index at the rear of the book didn't allow you jump to the subject - some of the available links highlighted took you to a different section to where you thought you were going. The maps were useless as you couldn't read them properly even if you zoomed in on them. Someone in our party had the paper version which we referred to after too many disappointing attempts at using the Kindle version.Perhaps reference books like this shouldn't be sold as electronic versions.Definite waste of money.

This was an essential companion for my trip to the Philippines and its many islands. I couldn't tell you how many times I referred to it, whether looking for a good restaurant, places to see, or how to get there, it had everything an off the beaten path traveler would need.

Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power, by Noam Chomsky

Review

"A primer in Chomsky’s analysis of the faults of the American political and economic system. Taking as its backbone the idea that “a significant part of the American Dream is class mobility: You’re born poor, you work hard, you get rich,” Chomsky systematically documents the many ways the system is rigged from top to bottom to ensure that corporations always win."—Billmoyers.com"Since Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century, income inequality has not been novel material for a book. Nevertheless, the latest book from famed activist and linguist Chomsky (Who Rules the World?) seems fresher than almost any title on the subject in recent memory. The book, based on the documentary of the same name, is a compilation of interviews that the film’s directors conducted with Chomsky from 2011 to 2016. Chomsky observes the present-day United States with such lucid clarity that readers may feel they are viewing familiar terrain for the first time. He offers a “10 Principle” formula for how plutocratic interests operate (Principle No. 7 is “Engineer Elections”; Principle No. 3 is “Redesign the Economy”). Chomsky observes that much of what made the 1950s and ’60s the “Golden Age” of the U.S. economy was that, at the time, what was good for General Motors really was good for America: “When the U.S. was primarily a manufacturing center, it had to be concerned with its own consumers.” Chomsky also touches, fascinatingly, on subjects as diverse as “the psychology of nagging” (as employed by the advertising industry) and the disappearing sense of solidarity in our civic life. Chomsky and his collaborators have created a perceptive and revelatory examination of the forces driving America inequality."—Publishers Weekly"Noam Chomsky in Requiem for the American Dream directs the fierce light of his intellect on the utopian ideology of neoliberalism, the absurd idea that markets should dictate all aspects of human society. He dissects the disastrous consequences of this ideology for our society, culture, and politics. He explains how corporations indoctrinated the public, academia, and the mass media to sign on for a project that has devastated the lives of working men and women and obliterated the common good. Every promise made by the proponents of neoliberalism is a lie. Its power to write its own laws and regulations, Chomsky points out, has ultimately created a mafia economic system and a mafia political system that is exemplified in the rise to power of the demagogue Donald Trump."—Chris Hedges, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt"While many books attempt to explain how we got to this political moment (some successfully), Noam Chomsky’s latest, Requiem for the American Dream, provides necessary historical context. Zooming in on ten ways that government and corporate interests have kept the American people down, Chomsky offers a compelling history that explains today’s economic and political landscape. At 157 pages, it’s a short, beautifully put together book."—Huffington Post

Largely a rehash and summary of points already covered in more depth and detail in other books. It is a good introductory primer for your Republican friends with an open mind - if they exist.

For decades, economic scholars have commented on the dangers inherent in the growing concentration of wealth in Western society. Though misleadingly referred to as “income inequality” in the new media, this critically important topic actively entered public debate in 2011 with Occupy Wall Street. Nobel Prize-winning economists Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman and others added to the debate in the years that followed. Then, Senator Bernie Sanders flogged the issue at every opportunity in his presidential race in 2016, giving the issue further prominence. If there’s anyone alive and alert in America today who isn’t aware that the concentration of wealth is a growing problem for our society, I’d be surprised.Few contemporary American observers have a clearer-headed understanding of the issue and its causes than Noam Chomsky. Chomsky, born in 1928, is widely regarded as the father of modern linguistics and one of the founders of the field of cognitive science. He’s also well known—some might say notorious—as an activist and social commentator. He has written dozens of books on the technical aspects of his academic work, and even more on politics. But his latest, Requiem for the American Dream: The 10 Principles of Concentration of Wealth & Power, is not a book he wrote.Instead, the book was distilled from a 2015 film of the same name, a documentary patched together using interviews filmed over four years with Chomsky. Unlike the books he has written, most of which are slow going and many (the texts on linguistics, impenetrable), Requiem consists entirely of transcriptions from the spoken word. The style is conversational and uses only a bare minimum of jargon. It’s a quick read, and an enlightening one.As Chomsky notes, “Power has become so concentrated that not only are the banks ‘too big to fail,’ but as one economist put it, they are also ‘too big to jail.'” Given our experience over the past decade, it would be difficult to argue with that. And anyone who closely follows events in American society today would say the same about this observation by Chomsky: “the rich and powerful, they don’t want a capitalist system. They want to be able to run to the ‘nanny state’ as soon as they’re in trouble, and get bailed out by the taxpayer.” If the American people fully understood how much tax money is funneled to corporations as subsidies, and how much the tax code has been distorted to favor them and their shareholders, they would storm Washington DC by the millions. In Requiem, Chomsky presents ten “principles” that together explain how the massive concentration of wealth in America today has come about. (His analysis applies to other wealthy countries as well, but it fits the U.S. best.) His argument is best summed up as what he calls a vicious circle: “Concentration of wealth yields concentration of power, particularly so as the cost of elections skyrockets, which forces the political parties even more deeply into the pockets of major corporations.”The 10 principles underlying this reality, as Chomsky sees them, are: Reduce Democracy Shape Ideology Redesign the Economy Shift the Burden Attack Solidarity Run the Regulators Engineer Elections Keep the Rabble in Line Manufacture Consent Marginalize the PopulationI’ve never seen a more comprehensive or economical explanation of how wealth has come to be so concentrated in so few hands in the U.S. today. Most of these principles are self-evident at a glance. Only two may require explanation. Chomsky uses the word “solidarity” as a synonym for empathy, caring for others, or “concern for your fellow man,” to cite another archaic expression. His Principle #8, “Keep the Rabble in Line,” refers to the coordinated 45-year effort by Big Business and Right-Wing ideologues to destroy the labor movement. The editors of Requiem—Peter Hutchison, Kelly Nyks, and Jared P. Scott—have interspersed short passages from other sources among the 10 Principles. The sources range over the centuries: from Aristotle and James Madison to Harry Truman and Martin Luther King Jr. These short excerpts from classic documents, speeches, press reports, and social commentaries add depth to the book’s presentation and enhance understanding of Chomsky’s message.Chomsky’s views have often been regarded as extreme. Certainly, he is vilified by commentators and scholars on the Right. But if you read Requiem for the American Dream, I think you’ll find his reading of history is accurate, his logic is sound, and his view of America today is—sadly—right on target.

Clear summary of the fundamentals and history of the mechanisms enabling and sustaining concentration of power to the few with wealth.Included are excerpts of related writings supporting the topics from a variety of sources: Adam Smith, James Madison, Aristotle, Alan Greenspan, Citigroup document, Standard and Poors research, John Dewey, etc. The related material gives you a hint that what Chomsky is writing about is not far fetched but grounded in a rich history of ideas about how the world should work.

Chomsky's elaboration of how we got to now and the techniques and strategies of the wealthy ruling elite is delivered in a succinct and easy-to-understand text. Essential reading for those trying to make real sense of the world today or looking for ways to take control back from the few and give a voice to the masses.

Excellent read that should appeal to all reading levels and offer insight into how American has evolved into a two class society ruled by plutocrats. He details the evolution of business and markets and the role our government plays in allowing a powerful few to rule the masses.America has gone from being a manufacturing economy with small finance sector to being a finance economy with a small manufacturing base. One thing that has always boggled my mind is how people constantly vote against their own interests, especially on the right, but also on the left as well. Well Noam explains it very eloquently. The parties are dominated by special interest and business lobbies shape policy and our political talking points.Which brings me to another point which he outlines very well. The current Republican party would not have been a party at all in 1971. They would be off either party’s charts in 1971. An extremists group that wouldn’t have even make a blip on the political radar. Nixon policies on the other hand, were far left of the modern Democrat.Today we have a majority of Democrats that consider themselves centrists but would have been Republicans in 1971 by most policies. Call them Reagan Democrats or Rockefeller Republicans, but it’s resulted in policy paralysis for the working and poor and accelerated the wealth of the masters of society and business.Noam keeps the paragraphs short, tries not to use too many 5 cent words, and assembled a lot of great observations and information in 10 short paragraphs. I have yet to watch the movie, but the book cut straight to the heart of the matter. He doesn’t pull any punches and he offers the straight scoop on wealth concentration, social imbalance and the impacts it has on our society. The positive thing I take from the book is that this is a political problem, which means there is a political solution. The majority of Americans agree on a lot of principal matters that would result in a lot more prosperous healthy lives for the most of society. When things get this far out of balance, historically the public has pressured the governments and businesses to make concessions such as in the New Deal. It's up to us to organize and sustain grass roots pressure to shape policy. We the people, can overcome the power of money but we need to act urgently and work together for grass roots change. Sustained pressure from a small but persistent and patient group of citizens. That’s what Noam emphasizes has resulted in the freedoms we have won in the past.
