She is also a nutrition professor in the biology department at City College of San Francisco. Be forewarned: this book is written for financially stable, middle-aged white women. How do I know that? The author says so herself. Her supposedly revolutionary study only focused on this one demographic, meaning that if you have other challenges in your life other than being unhappy with your body, such as financial difficulty, this advice isn't "proven" to work for you. I've suffered from eating disorder problems in the past, and I actually regret reading this because of how much it just seemed to gloss over certain issues. I was left with a helpless, hopeless feeling while reading this book. She really makes it seem like there's nothing you can do to control your body weight, which is definitely not true. That said, the author does a great job of backing up her claims with research, which I do appreciate, but this becomes overkill at a certain point, and I felt like I was being slammed over the head with the idea that it is impossible for anyone to lose weight no matter how hard they try. Plus, it's easy to selectively cherry-pick studies when you're writing about such an incredibly broad topic. Overall, I found this book extremely frustrating. I can see how it would be helpful for some people, and I may revisit it at some point in the future, but I really gained nothing from reading this.

I am dedicated to reducing childhood eating disorders and recommend this book as "required reading" for any parent raising a child today. There is a clear correlation between eating disorders and diet culture, and this book does an excellent job of describing the dangers of diet culture and the horrors of the "war against obesity." We wish that every parent would read this book so they can reduce the pressure they feel to raise a thin child or convert a larger child into a smaller version of themselves. In my efforts to reduce eating disorders, I consider Health at Every Size to be a fundamental element of successful prevention and recovery. This book does an excellent job of presenting the facts parents need to raise healthy kids.

Really good book, which gave me pause to reconsider so much of what we've been told about health and weight. I've been overweight most of my life (fluctuating 20-50 pounds over the years) but have always been very active and eat a balanced whole food diet. Now middle-aged, I have no health problems, despite society and the medical establishment assuming I am inherently unhealthy because I am (by their standards) obese. I myself had come to assume I should, or would eventually, be plagued by all sorts of weight related ills. Now I know better! This book (along with a few other good reads, such as Intuitive Eating) really helps to reinforce living a proud healthy life, regardless of weight, while challenging all the stigma that comes with being larger. This book didn't change my life, but I did come away a tad less self-critical. It's not a weight loss book, but is worth reading for anyone struggling.

Fantastic information. So liberating, but also encouraging to develop good habits. Well supports the premise that behavior is more important than solely size for health. I've actually improved my health promoting behaviors by losing the shame around size. Wish more information like this was out there. While I'm pro-medicine and science, these professions fall into the size bias which doesn't serve patients well.

OMG THIS BOOK. This book is so good. I learned so much about why biologically it is difficult to lose weight. She references a lot of scientific research in a way that is not difficult to understand. I also learned some really interesting facts about the food industry. I work at a clinic and this is the model that the clinic uses for treating clients with eating disorders, and I can see why. Really informative, helpful read.

While my opinion at times is somewhat different than the author, it gave a lot of information to ponder and reflect on. It seems this area is ever changing with new information and studies, so this will need continuous upgrading as new studies become available. I’ve read intuitive eating books before and they touted losing weight as the benefit. When I tried it, I didn’t lose weight, so I figured it didn’t work. This book seems better laid out in that weight loss isn’t the benefit, but health is. I’ve been searching for the way to lose weight and be fit for most of my life, and it hasn’t been attainable for me. Maybe I was focusing on the wrong thing. Maybe you are focused on the wrong thing, too.

This book is full of contradicting information and health opinions. A large portion of the book still focuses on nutrition, when that's not the right first step to establishing a healthy relationship with food after years of disordered eating and food fear mongering.

I've read "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" several times now (I've also taken the "Seven Habits" management course), and the book's powerful message never ceases to have a positive effect on nearly every aspect of my life.This is a book about organizational excellence, but with a key difference than most others on the same subject: Covey believes that the foundation of organizational excellence is personal excellence. The seven habits he describes in great detail are tools leading to that goal. They can be applied in nearly every situation in our lives, and, if successfully practiced, will help us to improve our lives at home, work and play. A word of caution, though: the book may not be for everybody; you have to be willing to face yourself honestly and courageously, and apply the seven habits daily, in order to become more effective.For the most part, "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" is well written. Covey tends to "sermonize" in places, and his writing style is at times long-winded and a bit patronizing (a flaw common to many writers of management books who think of theirs as the "best way"). However, despite its stylistic shortcomings, the book's message is powerful and profound...for those who have the courage to accept it and put it into practice.

I finally decided to read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I had purchased it some time ago and recently determined that now was the time to read this self-help classic. What a COLOSSAL disappointment! I am amazed that this mediocrity is so popular. I found it to be little more than 1980s managerial balloon juice.From “paradigm shift,” to “think Win/Win,” to (ugh) “synergy,” there is no empty self-help cliché left unturned. I should have stopped reading the first time I saw the word “synergy.” (I get countless “business proposals” in my email every day and, if I bother to skim any of them at all, I delete them as soon as the word “synergy” makes an appearance.) No word represents the trite emptiness of this book better than “synergy” – except maybe the verb form of the word: “synergize,” or the adjective “synergistic,” or the adverb “synergistically.” But they are all here. (The author also repeatedly refers to “things that are learned” as “learnings.”)The book doesn’t even try to live up to its title. There is no argument at all to support the idea that these are seven actual habits that real people have used anywhere in the world to achieve real success. In fact, these seven so-called habits appear to be nothing more than seven things that the author thinks are really good ideas, with weird examples of how they helped him deal with his kid being bad at baseball and also helped his kid learn the value of cleaning up the yard. The book’s title doesn’t match the book itself, but then no one would spend their money on a book called, “The Seven Things Some Random Guy Thinks are Really Nifty-Keen.”Here’s some useful self-help/time management advice for you: do not waste your precious time with this book. There are dozens and dozens, if not hundreds, of better self-help books out there. Synergize your win/win paradigm shifts with some of those.

I rarely if ever leave reviews on purchases, but I felt the need to share this one. I've spent the past several years trying to figure out what I was doing wrong when it came to happiness. I had every reason to be happy, but yet felt this deep hollowness inside. I've tried all the positive thinking quick fixes, meditation, law of attraction, etc. Nothing seemed to click or "cure" this aching inside. It wasn't until I read the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, that the fog finally lifted. This book taught me why all those quick fixes don't work and how my happiness depended on my own internal work and efforts. I encourage anyone who is struggle with a similar situation or everyone for that matter to read this book. It'll change your perspective on life!

This is, hands down, one of the best and most powerful books I've ever read in my life. I have recommended it to countless people. Ways you can start to shift your thinking by taking an emotional inventory of your life and what you're doing/feeling every day. Just writing about it makes me want to go back and read it again. If you're here looking for a book that will help you harness that little spark inside of you that's saying, "You can be better" then this book is it. You're not an animal. Life doesn't condition you like a dog. This book is about the untouchable part of your human spirit that no one besides you controls. This book is about carrying sunny weather with you where ever you go, learning how much a proactive attitude benefits you, and really how sad and wasteful it is to walk through life allowing things to ruin your day. Things don't ruin your day. YOU ruin your day. You are always in control.Seriously, read this book. You won't regret it.
