Review

“This is a book to savor in a favorite chair. Maybe you’ll even find the one you’re sitting in reflected in its pages: Now I Sit Me Down is charmingly illustrated with postage-stamp-size images of many of the chairs discussed―all drawn with obvious care by the author.” ―Henry Petroski, The Wall Street Journal“Rybczynski adds another delightful volume to an already impressive shelf of books notable for formidable learning worn lightly and an infectious fascination with the way we craft the built environment . . . His prose has the engagingly conversational tone of an accomplished lecturer. You needn’t be a student of architecture or design to enjoy Now I Sit Me Down, but you will certainly come away knowing a lot more about the practices and principles that shaped chairs throughout history.” ―Wendy Smith, The Boston GlobeThe book is a slim, insightful introduction to the piece of furniture that shapes not only the way we sit, but the way we live, too.” ―Mark Medley, The Globe and Mail“Whether describing the Egyptian stool or its surprising descendant, the Hollywood director’s chair, Rybczynski elegantly sums up the social trends and technological innovations that have conspired to change the way we sit . . . There is a tactile quality to the writing.” ―Amanda Kolsen Hurley, Architect Magazine"[Rybczynski is] a refreshing voice on the design writing scene.” ―MiChelle Jones, The Dallas Morning News“With wit, scholarship and perspective, Witold Rybczynski's history of chairs and how we use them is a pure delight.” ―Shelf Awareness(starred review)"Who knew sitting was so complicated? Or so fascinating? Rybczynski . . . has a special knack for making everyday objects and ideas seem captivating, in part because he places them in a larger historical narrative. In his telling, the chair becomes a seemingly immortal character traveling, Forest Gump-like, through the vicissitudes of our shared history.” ―Doug Childers, Richmond Times-Dispatch“The chair becomes anything but everyday in Rybczynski’s discerning history . . . A worthy addition to Rybczynski’s well-regarded oeuvre, this cultured examination should be read in one’s favorite reading chair.” ―Booklist (starred review)“Rybczynski is totally engaging in this smoothly flowing, sharp, witty narrative―another winner from a top-notch writer on design.” ―Kirkus Reviews“[A] detailed and comprehensive history of the chair . . . .Rybczynski’s relentless curiosity is easily transferred to the reader as he astutely zeroes in on the details of what makes a chair design special or significant. This latest contribution from Rybczynski serves as further evidence that he is one of the best writers on design working today.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A short but delightfully detailed history of chairs, imperial and lowly, gilded and plastic--with simple line drawings which enhance the information. It made me walk around the house critiquing my conglomeration of seating products. Author even cites The Onion's satirical claim that the US doesn't need to produce any more chairs, there are plenty available in houses and stores and garage sales. From French courts to IKEA, chair designers want to solve the simple problem of where to sit and how to make an inviting and attractive chair. Rybczynski distills their quest into this tight account.

An architect knows that little things mean a lot. This is a gem of a book. It's about chairs: their importance and their history. There is fascinating history behind the designs and designers... why chairs look (and sit) the way they do. I especially like the thumbnail biographies of the designers: the crafting and marketing of this household work of art and science that we take for granted. All is covered in a great story telling fashion.

This is an interesting history of the development of chairs from ancient Egypt and China till our time. Unfortunately the book includes many verbal descriptions of various chairs without their pictures, and as a result these descriptions are not so clear.

A thorough, understandable review of the subject

This the 5th book I have read by this author and as with the previous 4 it was a pleasure. The author manages to distill an entire history of a particular subject into a enjoyable read for the most pedestrian historian. I plan to work my way through many more of his sizable works.

Brilliant history of how we sit from the tree-legged stool to the Eames chair. A social history as well as the history of the chair and it’s struc.

Brief coverage of the subject with nice sketches of the chairs.

Wide-ranging look at chairs.

When I travel, I always bring along the LONELY PLANET and EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE books. The LONELY PLANET books usually have more information on all aspects of travel while the EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDES are full of pictures of the sites of a country so you can plan your trip. This was the first time I found myself using the EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE more than the LONELY PLANET book for planning my days in Cyprus. Although Cyprus is a small country, bus service can be limited to out of the way places. I could look at the EYEWITNESS GUIDE and get a clear idea if the site was worth the effort to visit. It was amazingly helpful and I will keep this book as a souvenir of the trip because of the wonderful color pictures.

Since I had no idea of what to expect from Famagusta in North Cyprus, I bought this travel guide. It was somehow helpful with some general information before heading out to the Island. Nevertheless, it became worthless when I got to the Island. The guide is outdated, the maps and the Greek/Turkish phrase book are too small to read, the places to visit are only atractive to historians and the "survival guide" doesn't realy have practical information. Luckly, I was given a real North Cyprus tourist guide as well as a big map at the hotel which both had terrific and current information. If you want to get to know a little bit more about North Cyprus, go to [...] and see what's is going on. One more thing--things in North Cyrpus are very unexpensive and people are extremely friendly. Have a nice trip!

The guide does help plan a trip but is too general, do not give enough information on hikes, nature trails, starting point of trails which is my maim interest. Also information about the cities is mainly about museums and churches not enough about markets, times when the markets are open; special quarters to city hike and not enough information about good night life. The first pages have suggested trip plans which were useful to me.

I own about 40 DK Eyewitness Travel Guides and usually take one on my travels to complement a more thoroughly written guidebook like Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. The photos are always excellent, providing a fine visual overview of places. DK Cyprus, though, was perhaps the least useful DK Travel Guide that I have ever used. The descriptions of places were drier than Cyprus' summer weather, and the photos added little to what was in the more compact, less expensive DK Top 10 Cyprus book. Carrying 4 guidebooks (DK, DK Top 10, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guide) for our travels throughout all regions of the island, I soon realized that I could have been perfectly happy if I had only carried Rough Guide and DK Top 10.

i will be traveling to Cyprus this winter and am looking forward to it. Will be doing more exploring than swimming at that time, but I feel that having read this book, I am will be well prepared. Great pictures always!

The book was the only one we carried with us as we toured both the Republic of Cyprus (South) and the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. There is excellent information on line about the South, but the book was absolutely necessary for the North. It is light weight and tells about the sites. We used the internet to confirm times in the South and found some of the times for the North that way. In the south we used GPS but it doesn't yet exist for the north. This book had helpful informaion that with the maps provided by the TRNC tourism information booths, made it relatively easy to find our way around--remember the days before GPS and internet. In planning the trip I also used a couple of other tour books that I borrowed from the library.

Nice but a little bit to short. Gives good first impression of the place.

photos and layout and content make for good quick guide. we toured with cyprus natives and besides a few hole-in-the-wall restaurants, did not venture beyond what this guide would have suggested anyhow.

The Furious Longing of God was recommended to me by a young Episcopalian priest after I asked for reading suggestions. I didn't think that I was having a crisis of faith. Instead, I thought I had questions about faith. After reading the first chapter of Brennan Manning's book, I realized with some embarrassment that I was looking at my faith backward. I was the person who patted herself on the back for regularly attending church, taking the Read the Bible in a Year challenge and throwing in a good deed here and there. This small book, which packs a huge wallop, was a game changer for me. I savored every word and even read it twice. It now rests next to my bed as a kind of touchstone. Brennan Manning addresses his thoughts to Everyman. He does not preach. He does not hold himself out to be a spiritual magician who can transform his readers as we reach the last page. Instead, he comes across as a guy I would love to spend a few hours with at a coffee shop having a back-and-forth conversation.By integrating Scripture and writings from several philosophers (and Shel Silverstein!), he explains the true meaning of Christian faith to me. Jesus becomes a regular guy instead of someone whose wrath is to be feared. Some might consider the idea of Jesus as a surfer dude, someone to hang with, someone who talks in my vernacular to be blasphemous. On the contrary; I love this Jesus, and most important, he loves me, warts and all. Framed on my bedside table are the following words: "Abba, I belong to you." and "I am my beloved's and His desire is for me." For anyone struggling with becoming a better Christian, a more God-like person, Brennen Manning convinced me that Jesus loves me just as I am. What a comforting thought, that carries unintended consequences of striving harder to be a true Christian who walks in Jesus's love.

Brennan Manning writes about God's love for us no matter what we've done to run, dodge, deflect, or reject that love. His message took wings with The Ragamuffin Gospel and was reemphasized with books on emphatic faith (Ruthless Trust) and emphatic gentleness (Relentless Tenderness of Jesus). In this book from 2009, he speaks again of God's determination to love us, come what may, supported with his own experience, biblical passages, and quotes from a broad spectrum of spiritual writers in a few brief chapters. Most chapters could be the basis for a great deal of personal reflection, even without the points to ponder that end most of them. I read a chapter a day as part of my morning prayer time, and that worked for me. This is a book to be sipped and savored.

Manning writes with the force of raw prose but the music of poetry. Thus he speaks to the deepest longings, fears and hopes in my heart. He speaks of "Abba's love," Papa's love for us. I keep repeating the sentence that he has shared with others. "Abba, I belong to you." It's a confession that has worked miracles in the lives of people who doubted God's forgiveness and love. And what moving and on-target stories he shares with us, from his own life and the lives of those he has touched.I think this part of the FOREWORD tells it all. "Remember, the Father desires to say something to YOU in these pages. Such is His furious affection for YOU. Such is His love for YOU." He builds on his key biblical text, Song of Solomon 7:10: "I am my beloved's, and his desire is for me." That is the Father's desire for each of us. It is His "furious longing."I found myself going deeper -- and deeper -- into the feeling and knowing that God loves me without any reservations. He wants to unite with me and me to unite with Him. "It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." (Galatians 2:20). YES! As I read this book, and plan to re-read it many times, that is the union both my Father and I desire.

I started reading Brennan Manning in 2003, when I was in a spiritual wilderness recovering from some deep wounding experienced in ministry overseas. His book, Abba's Child, helped me sort through the pain and confusion, leading me to God's Word and to understanding His love. I read his classic, The Ragamuffin Gospel, quite sometime later and was blessed by the life-changing message of God's unswerving, overwhelming love made possible only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Manning's, The Furious Longing Of God, was a great devotional read this Thanksgiving week. His poetic storytelling, quotes, and references to Scripture refreshed and challenged me to forgive as I have been forgiven, love as He loves, and rest in the knowledge of His trustworthiness. His repeated reminder that "I belong to Abba" is perhaps the greatest takeaway. If you've not yet read Manning, this is a good place to start; if Manning is an old friend, this is one not to be missed.

I believe this is the best of Manning's many works. It is concise whereas some of his other works ramble but this little volume summarizes his basic message of the love of God is yours before you ask for it or deserve it! His message is one that we all need and this little volume delivers it in a direct and powerful way. If you get only one Manning book, make this the one!! I read it over and over again and will lead a study group at my church for those who want to get a birds-eye view of this wonderful book and Brennan Manning.

Grace Frick introduced English-language readers all over the world to the distinguished French author Marguerite Yourcenar with her award-winning translation of Yourcenar’s novel Memoirs of Hadrian in 1954. European biographies of Yourcenar have often disparaged Frick and her relationship with Yourcenar, however. This work shows Frick as a person of substance in her own right, and paints a portrait of both women that is at once intimate and scrupulously documented. It contains a great deal of new information that will disrupt long-held beliefs about Yourcenar and may even shock some of her scholars and fans.  Joan E. Howard is the director of Petite Plaisance, the former home of Marguerite Yourcenar and Grace Frick, and is the author of From Violence to Vision: Sacrifice in the Works of Marguerite Yourcenar. She divides her time between Augusta and Northeast Harbor, Maine.

Joan Howard's biography is an amazing depiction of a world in which Grace Frick and MY share love of travel, literature, nature and each other. The research that went into producing this biography is astonishing and the writing is first class. I was so very sad to end this book and leave behind the world I looked so forward to entering each time I read. Joan Howard has given us a moving, deep and entertaining story that also makes the case that Grace Frick deserves her rightful place as the personal and professional partner of MY.

I am an author and playwright whose subject matter is often lesbian history, and I also live on Mount Desert Island, where Marguerite Yourcenar and Grace Frick lived for most of their lives together. For both reasons, I was eager to read the Savigneau biography, and for both reasons I was disappointed in the dismissive treatment of Yourcenar's lesbian relationship with Frick. We Met in Paris restores the truth about Frick and Yourcenar, giving detailed and documented credit where credit is due, in terms of Frick's deep engagement with her partner's work and how much her "people skills" factored into the quality of life they both experienced on a remote and rural Maine island. It was a fascinating book, meticulously researched... clearly a labor of love by a woman who knew both and who has her own roots in Maine. Grace Frick stands out an extraordinary woman, every bit the equal to her eccentric and brilliant partner, and I am forever grateful to Joan E. Howard for correcting the record, for documenting this powerful lesbian relationship in all of its complexity and dynamism, and for restoring the reputation of a legendary author to her full humanity.

This deeply researched and beautifully written biography of Grace Frick performs a major correction to previous accounts of her life and character, and gives a far better sense thasn we've had of Marguerite Yourcenar's life in America as well as her relationship with her life companion. A first-rate book, from its beginning to its moving concluding chapters.

Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression, by Mildred Armstrong Kalish

From Publishers Weekly

Kalish's memoir of her Iowa childhood, set against the backdrop of the Depression, captures a vanished way of traditional living and a specific moment in American history in a story both illuminating and memorable. Kalish lived with her siblings, mother and grandparents-seven in all-both in a town home and, in warmer weather, out on a farm. The lifestyle was frugal in the extreme: "The only things my grandparents spent money on were tea, coffee, sugar, salt, white flour, cloth and kerosene." But in spite of the austere conditions, Kalish's memories are mostly happy ones: keeping the farm and home going, caring for animals, cooking elaborate multi-course meals and washing the large family's laundry once a week, by hand. Here, too, are stories of gossiping in the kitchen, digging a hole to China with the "Big Kids" and making head cheese at butchering time. Kalish skillfully rises above bitterness and sentiment, giving her memoir a clear-eyed narrative voice that puts to fine use a lifetime of careful observation: "Observing the abundance of life around us was just so naturally a part of our days on the farm that it became a habit." Simple, detailed and honest, this is a refreshing and informative read for anyone interested in the struggles of average Americans in the thick of the Great Depression. From Bookmarks Magazine

One of the most endearing qualities of octogenarian Mildred Armstrong KalishÂ’s Little Heathens is that it runs counter to what the memoir, sadly, has too frequently become—self-indulgent, self-promoting gossip. Despite circumstances that could easily have left her embittered, Kalish, a retired English professor, recalls her formative years fondly. Through simple, honest prose punctuated with "her old pagan rhythms" (New York Times Book Review) and a host of memorable examples, Kalish performs her greatest feat, which is to make some of us under 80 just the slightest bit envious—crazy to say, but such is human nature—that we never experienced the Depression-era challenges and triumphs so lovingly recounted.Copyright © 2004 Phillips & Nelson Media, Inc.

I could peripherally identify enough with this author's experience having spent the first 10 years of my life on farms in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in the 50's. Twenty years later than the time period of this book, but we were very poor. I was in second grade when my parents, four older brothers and I left Pennsylvania for a series of rented farms in Wisconsin, some without electricity or indoor plumbing. Winters with frost on our bedroom walls, hot stones at our feet and quilts piled so heavily we could hardly turn over. To this day I need a cold room to sleep properly. So many of the values she speaks of in this book were also taught to me. This book kept my interest all the way through. Highly recommended.

An amazing book! A memoir, plainly told, of a farm childhood in a small Midwestern town. The details of everyday life were in part a revelation and in part a reminder of stories my grandmother had told me. The current generation of young people should read this book to get a clue about past generations.Older generations should read this book to remember the treats and travails of a much more difficult life. Mildred Kalish is a keen observer and an expert writer. Never self-pitying,never cute, never condescending, never sentimental, always clear, her balanced prose opens a door to yesterday. This book is a treasure!

My childhood, also rural, was not as harsh as Mildred's and was without the disruption of half year in town and half on the farm. Helping with the vegetable garden, laundry, 4 H animals, sewing, cooking, baking, canning and church activities were all similar. We lacked cousins in the area, for my Dad`s sisters had settled in other parts of the country after college and my Mom was an only child from Iowa who met, fell in lve with Dad during college and married after a year of teaching. Our hands must not be idle, for the devil awaited such opportunities! Reading was a treat and a joy! Mildred yearned for cottonlike Wonder Bread like the town kids had, so did I. My brother and I, salt shaker in pocket, sat in the dirt and ate tomatoes warmed by the sun. We sang around the piano as my Mother played and accompanied us in her full, rich alto voice. We listened to war news, while Mom knit socks and sweaters for boys in the Army and Navy, suffered through rationing, feared invasion over our hills....All considerations for someone born 11 years later. I am grateful she wrote her memoir!

I come from a long line of men and women who "worked the land" and this book gave me such a great appreciation for the generations that came before me. My father and mother were teen-agers living on farms during the depression and even though they were not in Iowa, I suspect, Nebraska farming was much the same. The story is told with great humor and intelligence, candidly and without judgement. I believe that the author held her early years in high esteem, as she did the people who molded her personality during such a difficult time. It was such a pleasure reading her story that I bought multiple copies to share with family & friends that I think will appreciate the trip down memory lane.

I absolutely loved "Little Heathens". Mildred made farm life so real and so appealing. From milking cows to pot-luck dinners, I was mesmerized with the everyday events of farm life. This family had it all, not ease and luxury, but solid family life, with grandparents and parents who had good values and knew how to "grow up a family'. Times were not easy in the days of the depression, but to see how people handled life when there were no conveniences like we have today, makes one know that the conveniences we do have today have made us soft, and taken away something very important in growing up and learning how to work.

I read portions of this book to my teenage granddaughters who think that helping out in the kitchen for under half an hour is oppressive. What our past generations did at very young ages to contribute to their families lives and how early they worked in various capacities is amazing. They were know at early ages for their character and work ethic, unlike today when some hold their first job at 20 years of age. There is a great deal of ingenious information from those who made do with what was at hand. Pack this one with the "survivor" kit of duct tape and jugs of water. If it doesn't help you survive, it will surely entertain you.

I absolutely love this book! I had it in paperback but gave it to a friend. I bought it on my Kindle so I could read it again and again. It's such a fun book, serious too, but told in a manner that is sweet and caring and so down to earth. It takes the reader back to such a different world. Hard work, family values - it's all here. But there is also much humor. Very few books make me laugh out loud or laugh until I cry - this one does both. Love your story, Millie!

This book is great. My mom read it in her book club and recommended it to me. She grew up on a ranch in Montana about the same time Mildred Kalish was growing up on a farm in Iowa. Mom was struck by the great number of similarities in their lives in rural America during the 20s and 30s. Mildred is a great story teller. She gives you a realistic picture of life in those days.

Pope Julius II was a fastidious man whose eye for the arts was always set on his lofty standards of beauty and perfection that few artists could satisfy. So when the pope saw the Pieta whose beauty surpassed the ancient Greek and Roman sculptures adorning the tomb of a French cardinal, he wanted the same awe-inspiring adornment for his tomb, whereupon one Michelangelo Buonarroti from Florence was summoned for the commission for the work. From then on, that’s how Michelangelo at age thirty-three reluctantly embarked on his Herculean task of frescoing the vault of the Sistine Chapel. This book by Ross King recounts such background stories of the making of the Sistine Chapel frescoes and descriptions of the personal traits of Michelangelo.Michelangelo’s work on the frescoes resulted from part Divine Providence of endowing the humanity with an awe-inspiring masterpiece of art to delight the senses of mankind through the ages and part secular ambitions to mark the names of both the commissioner and the artist themselves. Pope Julius II also wanted to renovate the Sistine Chapel that had been used as a living quarter for the guards, a fortress against papal enemies, and a jail. As no one pours new wine into old wineskins as said in the bible, the pope’s plan to revert the chapel to its original place of worship, which made him drop his tomb project, was met by his idea of frescoing the vault in its entirety. Michelangelo, who was a breadwinner of his family, accepted the commission with sumptuous amount of salary and commenced four-year of labor of woes and dramas on the vault of the chapel. There are revealing truths that should be known concerning the process of frescoing the Sistine Chapel as follows: Contrary to popular belief that Michelangelo did the work while lying prone on his back, he worked with his upper body bent backward like a bow. Also, it wasn’t done by solely by Michelangelo but a work of concerted efforts made by a contingent of his assistants chosen by Francesco Granacci, a close friend of Michelangelo. Michelangelo was innately a solitary worker who had a strong distrust of others who worked with him. As a matter of fact, Michelangelo was never a jolly fellow whose sociability would have endeared him to all, as in the case of his contemporary Raphael Sancti. It is also interesting to pay special notes on the figures Michelangelo used for the frescoes, which shows his ingenuity of selecting unique subject matters distinguished from his contemporaries. To illustrate, he used 7 prophets from the Old Testament and 5 sibyls from pagan myth to decorate the Sistine vaults. He was fascinated with prophetic knowledge of the sibyls who dwelled in sacred shrines and predicted the future in fits of inspired madness. This offered a compelling link between the sacred and the profane, the church and the esoteric pagan culture by reconciling pagan mythology with orthodox Christian teachings. From this book, readers will find that the position of a painter/sculptor was not esteemed highly; he was more of a skilled laborer, a craftsman, given exact orders how to produce his work by his commissioner or patron. As a matter of fact, the image of a solitary genius who would wield his brush and pallets to portray his world of imagination from the fathoms of his soul was a romantic fable. In Michelangelo’s time, an artist’s creativity was fettered by the demands of marketplace or his patron. Nevertheless, Michelangelo often disagreed to the pope’s own artistic direction and even had a temerity of broaching the shipping charges incurred in transporting the marbles from Carrara for the aborted tomb project at a dinner table with the pope .Michelangelo was said to be a man of aesthetically unpleasing appearance without sociability; his direct altercation with Leonardo da Vinci as described in this book was amusing to discover. Both of the masters of the arts did not like each other publicly, but it was on the part of da Vinci who instigated such heated feud. He disregarded sculptors, including Michelangelo, as mechanics in the appearance of unkempt bakers.King’s research into this daunting subject matter is indeed impressive and highly laudable. Reading his account of how Michelangelo worked on his frescoes enabled me to envision the scene very vividly. The descriptions of the streets, alleys, and the Sistine Chapel are realistically rendered as if they were pictures. However, I could not help but feel a subtle tone of anti-papacy or even a remote sense of anti-Catholicism in this book. Evidently, there were corruptions among the church officials, clerics, not to mention the laypersons. But I wonder if King should have spent several chapters about Pope Julius II to discern just what kind of person he was in a negative shadow, the fallacy of his character, of the papacy in general. I ascribe such tendency to culturally transmitted anti-Catholicism in England, a home of the Episcopal Church, from the time of Henry VIII because this is not the first time I recognize such sentiment in English writers.Notwithstanding the above sentiment, the book has its magical way of transporting readers to Italy in the early 16th century and invites readers to meet with Michelangelo as he was in his disheveled hair and untidy outfit dripped with colors from the unfinished fresco. Despite all his personal foibles, he is indeed a person bizarre fantastico whose muscular nudes in frantic but graceful gyrates have both the beauty and the sublime that produce in the spectator a kind of astonished wonder so formidable and so fantastic throughout the ages.

The topic of this book is an artistic and historic blockbuster: Michelangelo's famous frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The author tells the story in great detail -- arguably in too great detail. Every artist and assistant artist and many of their relatives and patrons are given, along with their towns and some of their history -- often with little relevance to the story. This is a lot to wade through and is more than is necessary. Their names are long and hard to pronounce, at least for a non-speaker of Italian. There is a fair amount of repetition as well. For example, we are told at least three times that, contrary to (supposed) popular belief, Michelangelo did not do his painting solo and while lying on his back (as in Irving Stone's "The Agony and the Ecstasy"): He built elaborate scaffolding to make his work and that of his assistants easier. We are told about the sexual reputations of not just Michelangelo (meh) and Raphael (stud), but of many of their friends and associates. This sounds promising but is actually not that explicit and hence a bit disappointing when the book could have used a bit of pizzazz...Arguably, the person who has the most developed and interesting character is not the artist but the man who commissioned him: Pope Julius II -- a domineering and vain and aggressive person, who was perhaps more interested in the power struggles among the Vatican and the Italian city-states (and against France) in the 16th century than in the finer points of the Catholic faith. We never get a definitive idea of how Michelangelo himself felt about Julius -- though it seems negative in balance. We also don't get much info on Michelangelo's attitude toward religion, though it is suggested that he was a believer (with little supporting evidence).Although the book is about Michelangelo as a painter, he considered himself primarily a sculptor (and is perhaps remembered that way). Yet there is not much about his work with stone and its relation to his painting. One of the book's major shortcomings is the lack of good illustrations. There are just a few color plates and not that many black and white ones. I had to go to the Wikipedia entry on the Sistine Chapel to get decent close-ups so I could follow the descriptions in the text. The author should have included at least this link (and probably others that might be even better). The author's analysis of the frescoes artistic features does not seem authoritative and at times seems sketchy. Of course, to be fair, there are plenty of expert analyses to be had.I had previously read the author's "Bruneleschi's Dome" which is more streamlined and easier to digest. "Pope's ceiling" was, though interesting, rather ponderous. Sometimes less is more as they say.

Unlike Brunelleschi's Dome which I have found more tedious, I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It is entertaining and very illustrative of the times Michelangelo and all of the Renaissance masters lived. The papal intrigues also come out as a kind of Agatha Christie mystery in a sense. The hardships Michelangelo had to go through in order to achieve the completion of this supreme work sound quite real and it is astounding to learn how he managed to outdo some of the masters of the time when he was new to fresco. YES, here I learned that believe it or not, this was his FIRST experience with the technique. I considered him a genius in his own right before reading the book, but now my admiration is boundless.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Renaissance art who is not looking for a scholarly volume but is interested in coming closer to understanding these people's geniuses. I would also recommend reading it BEFORE going to the Vatican in order to be able to know where to look and to appreciate the work to the full without having to listen to parrot like guides. I have bee to the Sistine Chapel twice but I can't wait to go again and check the facts for myself.

This is a classic, of course. Elegantly written, insightful, philosophically sophisticated, with a lot of insight for those who want to understand international relations. Castlereagh simply wanted to maintain a balance of power in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars in order to facilitate Britain's security. Metternich, representing an Austria that was in the center of Europe and could not simply seek a discrete balance, wanted a conservative social contract at a time when the forces of nationalism were ultimately destined to sunder the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They wanted the same thing for different reasons. Castlereagh, dealing with resistance from his own Parliament, wanted a realpolitical solution. Metternich, the ultimate practitioner of "Machtpolitik," understood nonetheless the importance of ideas and ideology. I bought and read the paperback edition of A World Restored more than thirty years ago. I bought the hardback so that I could read it again without having to physically hold the book together. A necessary read for those truly interested in international relations.

Dr. Kissinger wrote an informative book on the Napoleonic Wars and their resolution at the Congress of Vienna and subsequent conferences. The balance of power after 1814 and 1815 was achieved with great diplomatic skill and the wisdom not to punish France too heavily. The machinations of Austria through her cunning foreign minister are particularly well-analyzed. Some of the writing is a bit too abstract or else I am not smart enough to understand it after one or two readings. The book ends before we see the mistakes Austria made in 1914, but those mistakes are obvious now. I did not realize how Czar Alexander's views changed so much or vacillated, and how enthralled he was by Metternich. This book makes more sense when we consider the chaos of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. This book ought to be and likely is required reading for diplomats. This is good history, and like all history allows us to see the mistakes and triumphs of others clearly.

The knowledge, thought and hypotheses are remarkable. For any interested in the post Napoloeonic period and the Congress of Vienna, a thesis not to be missed. Outstanding.

Henry Kissinger's "A World Restored: Metternich, Castlereagh and the Problems of Peace 1812-22" is not for just anyone interested in that period of history. I read about a fourth of Kissinger's "White House Years" ("W H Y"), and loved his writing and clear thinking in that book (the book was destroyed in a fire). But it was apparently written long after "A World Restored" was written, because the excellent writing in "W H Y" didn't exist in his earlier book. In "W H Y", I could just follow his thoughts and not have to re-order or evaluate them to fully understand (and appreciate them). BUT, in "A World Restored", I had to constantly mull over sentences to get what he was trying to say. So this book is for very intelligent readers who already have a good grasp of the historical situation. Kissinger delves deeply here, but with inadequate writing skills, in my opinion. I'm reminded of what I decided was the difference between me and the truly brilliant students at Stanford. They could intuit what the professor was trying to say, but I could only get what he was actually saying.

My son-n-law is a great respecter of Henry Kissinger and a history buff. He was very pleased to receive this book.

Great quality for the price!

All good

amazing the amount of research that has gone into this book.
