Unlike in the Time quintet, the evil in this book is human... There is, of course, the evil that is the thing that a human has done. But there is also the evil that is the relational mess and emotional turmoil that goes on and must be resolved. This is a beautifully wirtten and beautifully created story that will draw you into its life to experience the emotion and the resolution fully. The heroine is a young blind girl; and as a female who is blind, I must say that I am most impressed with the character development. Emily is not portrayed as a person with some kind of superhuman ability that develops in spite of her lack of sight; nor is she portrayed in any way as someone who has something to overcome that has to do with blindness itself. Her blindness is a personal characteristic that is sometimes irritating to her and causes her frustration at times; but she also is skilled at coping with it in her daily life, and when presented with the opportunity to take advantage of it in order to solve the community dilemma, she does so. Emily's true struggle is in other areas of life; and this is the genious that is L'Engle's work in developing her character. She is a child struggling to find her identity; and she is acutely aware of the relational and emotional issues affecting the family with whom she lives. The depth of her friendship with Vicky is truly touching. As deeply touching is the impact of that friendship on Susy--and while I was never personally drawn to Susy, I found myself empathizing with her at times while reading this book. I had difficulty deciding whether I identified more with Emily or Vicky. (It is still a toss-up.)

Her books are always a good and thoughtful read in which I always learn something. She tells a good story, and I've really enjoyed following the Austin family.

good

Fun and entertaining and with some theology and ethics thrown in. Adults m, young adults and some children could all enjoy this in different ways

awesome story and the book was pristine.

Part of a series by L'Engle. Be sure you check out the sequence so as not to get confused. Always a good read!

The Young Unicorns was a little bit of a disappointment. I love The Austin Family Chronicles; love Vicky's knowledgeable insights, all the chemistry between the characters, the different settings and magic yet realistic feeling of that the writing conveys. But The Young Unicorns just didn't quite hook me the way the other books in the series do. This could be for many reasons. The Young Unicorns, unlike the other books in the series, is written in third person. I understand this is because this story doesn't particularly revolve around Vicky, but it just seemed off, like a piece is missing out of her life. The book had a completely different feel than its companions. We leave the quiet countryside for the busy streets or New York and submerged in one of the oddest mysteries, involving a gang called the Alphabats, a greedy bishop, a underground abandoned subway station and a beautiful cathedral. Intriguing, yes. Yet, the story seemed to drag on at times and I thought it was never going to wrap up. I also find myself wishing that there was more about their new friends, Emily, Dave, Mr. Theo, and the Rabbi. The characters in this novel are much more diverse in comparison to some of the others in this series, yet after this book, they are hardly mentioned again. I feel like the author got bored of the series and felt like writing a mystery and sort of through the Austins into it. It was a little strange. To be honest, I would have given this book three stars if I wasn't so attached to this series. It really wasn't nearly as good as the other books to me. Thankfully, it's just this one book that didn't meet my standards. I'm a huge fan of the other books. All in all, I wouldn't have missed this book, but I don't think I'll be coming back to it.

Granddaughter enjoyed as usual.
