If You Ever Want to Bring an Alligator to School, Don't! (Magnolia Says DON'T!), by Elise Parsley

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Is Magnolia a rebel or natural leader? Readers will need to decide when this young avant-garde student brings an alligator to school for show and tell. In second person narration, readers are warned against bringing an alligator to school, as the text and illustrations use Magnolia and her mischievious alligator as examples of the havoc that such a creature can bring to a classroom setting. After the alligator chews gum in class, tries to eat a student, and shows funny pictures during the teacher's lesson, he is finally introduced during show and tell. When Magnolia reveals a surprising fact about alligators (they are only afraid of other alligators—and humans!), the troublesome creature makes a run for it. Magnolia, could be the sister of David, from David Shannon's picture book series, with her large round head, wide mouth, and wiry hair. Magnolia is as busy as the alligator and just as prone to tomfoolery. The endpapers continue the goofy fun. VERDICT This is an engaging debut picture book written in free verse will appeal to a wide age range. Here's hoping for more adventures with Magnolia!—Gwen Collier, Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, NY

I recently bought this for my 2½ year old granddaughter who was coming for a visit. They live on the West coast and I live on the East coast - thank God for face time. She absolutely loved this book. She eventually got to the point where there were certain passages she would say out loud with me. I also bought If You Want to Take a Piano to the Beach, DON'T. She loved that one too. They spent a week at the beach with friends who all have young children and they all loved it. The illustrations are phenomenal. You find something new every time you read it. My granddaughter loved having long conversations about the illustrations. We spent a lot of quality time reading and talking about this book. I have another granddaughter who is only 3 months old and I will definitely buy these books for her when the time comes.

Story: 5 out of 5 starsArtwork: 5 out of 5 starsCharacters: 5 out of 5 starsThe artwork and the writing of this book brings the characters to life. Any child, no matter what age, will enjoy seeing the hilarious antics of the alligator and the panicked responses of poor Magnolia who just wants to get to show and tell without her poor choice of a subject eating any of her classmates. Magnolia herself is very relatable for any young child in school who is just trying their best to stay out of trouble but can't quite seem to manage it--especially when the "pet" alligator is determined to make that dream impossible! The book is endearing, funny, and makes you want to read it again and again. I will definitely have to check out other books by Elise Parsley because I know my seven-year-old niece and eight-year-old nephew will love this book!

The illustrations are hilarious. The little details are great, like a boy who drops his shiny rocks on the floor to start a one-man standing ovation. The facial expressions and body language on all the characters are a great part of the narrative. The way Magnolia tells her story - not really admitting to having firsthand experience; just warning everyone else in case they're ever in this situation - a great choice. Most importantly, my 3-year-old daughter loves it. She is so excited because she already knows what's coming on the next page. And (you'll understand why if you get the book) she has been randomly shouting, "BOOGA BOOGA BOOGA!" without warning.

By now, of course, you’ll wish you’d brought a hollow stick or a bird’s nest or some sparkly rocks for show-and-tell instead of an alligator. By now, you’d rather have some dirt than an alligator. IF YOU EVER WANT TO BRING AN ALLIGATOR TO SCHOOL, DON’T!Magnolia and her alligator never get old. That’s because their creator, Elise Parsley, made them so darn funny. As you turn the pages, follow the paper airplane; admire the colors, textures, and shadowing; read the names on the lockers and the facts on the blackboard; notice the classroom diversity, giggle at the alligator’s shenanigans; and count Magnolia’s teeth. You might accidentally learn something. I sure did.Like the paint on page thirteen, Parsley mixes humor, mischief, and a dangerous supporting character with the universal school theme and stirs it to a satisfying circular end. Haven’t we all experienced the anxiety of show-and-tell? Haven’t we all feared that teacher?Everything you see is a part of Parsley’s charming life and imagination--even the complementary font. And that’s why I'm sure you’ll love this book.Anyone who disagrees deserves three checks by their name and an underline.~ Anna

This book is a riot!!!Totally recommend for ages 4+I'm not sure my two year old appreciates the humour, as you need a bit of an appreciation of sarcasm to get some of the jokes...so I wouldn't say it's appropriate for ALL ages if you want your kids to appreciate the true beauty of this book but five stars anyway...if not more!My twenty something year old sister actually borrowed the book from my kid to read herself! It was that good...It's also GREAT for encouraging your kid to think outside the box and be creative.

So fun. Used this book as a guest reader in my daughter's kindergarten class. They loved it. The illustrations are exceptional. I'm looking forward to more work from the author!

I really enjoyed this book. I teach preschool and many of the boys in my class have this obsession with alligators so I figured they would enjoy this and they did. As soon as I finish reading they ask to listen to the story again. This is one of the books I don't keep in the classroom just for that reason. I bring it out randomly or I'll get stuck reading this a zillion times a day.

This book is the best! The first time I read this book with my son I had to keep stopping because I was laughing hard. The story is cute and funny but the illustrations are what made the book pure perfection! Magnolia’s facial expressions were wonderfully done. I love when you find a book that both you and you child love reading together over and over again. Thank you Elise Parsley! I want wait to read more of her books with my kids!
