I had to purchase this book for a program design course I was taking. Since I knew very little about UML I was looking forward to reading it, especially since I knew that this book was the 'bible' of UML. About half-way through I quit reading the book because I wasn't learning very much. Here is the main problem. Fowler presents concepts using high-level, theoretical and sometimes incomplete terminology and doesn't illustrate with good examples. I frequently read and re-read passages but still left scratching my head uncertain what he was talking about. If he could have just included some concrete code examples, the book would have been much better. I also detect a little of the purist and elitist mentality in Fowler's writing. Purist in the sense that he is a true believer in UML and elitist in the sense that he doesn't think it necessary to explain some of the things he is talking about. Finally, there is some of the artificially-inflated complexity that comes with certain fields in CSci. If you really want to have a practical understanding of UML to use in your coding or programming, this is not the book for you. All IMHO.

Fantastic, this is what puts software design into a new world and cuts through all the impractical clutter of full UML. Fowler shows mastery by cutting everything that is NON essential from UML and showing a methodology (I'm a distinct fan of the idea of UML 'sketching') that generates a novel language of high practical relevance for large softwqare bodies, in fact any kind of domain specific knowledge structuring (building relationsships in an ontology in a sense). Masterful ...

As the front page subtitle states, this is a brief guide to the UML. It is also a good one.The first chapter is an introduction to UML, including some short history on the language. The second chapter covers the Development Process with a quick overview of a couple of them - i.e. Agile, RUP, ...- followed by some guidance on choosing the right one.The following chapters cover the main UML diagrams, respectively, the Class, Sequence, Object, Package, Deployment, Use Case, State Machine, Activity, Communication, Composite Structure, Component, Collaboration, Interaction Overview and Timing Diagrams. At the end, there is an appendix that summarizes the changes between UML versions. Not all of the diagrams get in-depth coverage. Whereas Class Diagrams get the most attention of the author with two chapters specifically dedicated to them, Object, Deployment, Communication, Composite Structures, Component, Collaboration, Interaction Overview and Timing Diagrams get only a few pages, between two and four. Some of them are just limited to the sample diagrams that illustrate the chapter, with no or little text to support them. Rather than a shortcoming, this seems to be ensuing from the author's willingness to have the book limited to a few pages - 150 exactly, without the appendix -, covering what he considers to be essential. As such, this book is no replacement for the three classic UML books, i.e. the User's Guide, the Reference Manual and the Unified Process of the Booch/Jacobson/Rumbaugh Object Technology Series that the reader, in my opinion, will anyway have to go through until he/she gains sufficient working proficiency with the language. If the reader's intention is so, he/she'll be better inspired reading "UML Distilled" after, or better, in parallel with the User's Guide, diagram after diagram and have a look at the Reference Manual on selected dictionary terms, as necessary. The Unified Process book can be read independently. This is not a book an OOA/OOD. As prerequisite, the reader is expected to be comfortable enough with OO concepts such as Class, Object, Relationship, Aggregation, Composition, Inheritance, etc. Although not required, working proficiency with a former OO modeling method - e.g. Fusion, in my case - will help.

When I first read this book I thought, hmm, that's a really good first step to learning UML. I then read many other books including Larman's Applying UML and Patterns. After some time and achieving decent knowledge in OOAD, I took another look at UML Distilled. I realized that I missed out on about half the concepts because I really didn't have the background. This book is a goldmine of distilled information. The way the author seperates the perspectives is much better appreciated when the reader has some background. I would recommend reading this to get a start in UML, then reading some intro OOAD books and finally coming back to this and reading it again. The only complaint I have is that you need to read slowly because Fowler has something good to say just about everywhere.Definitly a classic.

There are hundrends if not thousands of articles and tutorials floating around on the net which are written on or around or about UML, some try to cover everything in a shallow manner, some try going deep into a very specialized aspect of one kind of diagrams. As a software architect, people like me need something concise and handy which we can constantly refer to which chalking out different diagrams which are required in software project following RUP methodology, this book serves this purpose in an excellent manner and I am certainly happy using it for the last couple of projects I handled. One thing I must say is that I found the coverage of 'Development Process' (Ch 2) very sketchy and superficial, and most probably it does not even belong in a book so focussed in being used as a reference for a software project. There is only one more thing which I expected from this book. Different UML diagrams are sketched and used in different stages of a project, if only these were overlapped with RUP project phases (inception, elaboration, construction and transition) along with a representative of other documents used in those phases the use of the UML diagrams could have been realized from a better perspective.I would highly recommend the book 'Building J2EE Applications with RUP' (Peter Eeles, Kelli Houston and Wojtek Kozaczynski) for the J2EE practitioners, these two books complement each other very well in the J2EE/RUP world.

Macbeth (Picture This! Shakespeare)

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–Each book includes a brief introduction to the play, followed by an illustrated cast of characters and a glossary of literary terms. Annotated text from the play alternates with black-and-white illustrations of selected scenes, in the style of a graphic novel. It is unclear why the editors did not make these true graphic novels throughout. The black-and-white comic art is undistinguished, and as most of it simply depicts two characters in conversation, it does little to clarify what is going on. The first two plays in particular offer marvelous possibilities for the illustrator, so the ho-hum comics are disappointing. Think about it boxes contain study questions such as, What has worried Macbeth? and boxed Literary terms give examples like, ‘Hermia...Hermia...Helena...' is...alliteration. Teacher's guides accompany the books. Those interested in a graphic-novel interpretation might want to consider Arthur Byron Cover's Macbeth (Puffin, 2005), which is illustrated in manga style and would probably appeal more to reluctant readers. These titles might be useful for teaching Shakespeare to reluctant readers, but a better choice might be a simple annotated Shakespeare such as a Sparknotes No Fear Shakespeare series (Spark), supplemented by Bruce Coville's William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet (1999) and William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (2003, both Penguin), which are picture-book prose adaptations, or Adam McKeown's Romeo and Juliet: Young Reader's Shakespeare (Sterling, 2004).–Kathleen E. Purchased this as required reading for my sons' high school literature classes. They have used several in the series, and it makes understanding Shakespeare MUCH easier. They juxtapose the traditional play on one side with modern translation on the other....most kids don't realize what amazing stories he tells because the language just seems...well, weird. They can finally understand what the teacher is actually trying to talk to them about -- imagery, figurative language, symbolism and style -- in a way they can actually relate to. Very useful book to expand on why Shakespeare was one of the greatest storytellers of his time.

There are many versions of Shakespeare's play that give excellent annotations, and as far as that goes, I like the layout of the book. But the line numbers are done wrong. This will not matter to many, and if you don't care about line numbers then this will be a good book for you. I teach English and spend a couple of class periods explaining how the numbering works and how two or three actors can each have a single part of a single line of poetry. None of that lesson works with this book except to point out how even editors can get it wrong or don't really care. Still I want to emphasize that if you are not picky about line numbers then this is a 5-star book for you--good intro and good materials at the back of the book.

I didn't actually realize this was a book/DVD combo. I just wanted the DVD but the book version is very nice as well. I'm a teacher and used this DVD at a previous school but my current school didn't own a copy so I bought this one. This presentation is a video of a stage production and I really like how it's done. In a few scenes, the producers have meshed two parts together or switched a couple things around but I actually like it because I feel like it flows better and make sense chronologically. If you're showing it for school just be aware that the Macbeths engage in PDA pretty frequently and there is a generous use of fake blood. All in all I feel the producers do a great job of staying true to the play itself and also the vibe Shakespeare would have probably been going for while helping modern audiences relate to it.

This is a fast moving and rather swashbuckling and bloody staging of the Scottish play. It isn't as creepy and scary as the Patrick Stewart version currently available - aside: Stewart really worked at creating scary and succeeding. . . However, this version does scare as all sorts of odd things and people (ghosts and witches and daggers) magically appear onstage in a way that would make Penn and Teller proud... It is really entertaining. OF all the versions of the Scottish play I've seen staged and listened to, this is the one I would show to a younger audience. The stage is smallish and serves up an easily followable play. The dialog is understandable and not overly dense. The players are earthy, dirty, stinky, and not well mannered (sometimes). It is easy to Identify with those characters. It is still one of Shakespeare's bloodiest plays. So beware of that.

The format on kindle is odd. I think the printed version would work better. The line numbers don’t match up with what the teacher quotes, and they are hard to determine while you are reading because of the way the pages are formatted. BUT, the modern interpretation is very helpful for my 15 year old. AND you can search key words like fair and foul, which make finding quotes (if not their proper line numbers) fast and easy.

In the theater, people apparently don't call Shakespeare's "Macbeth" by its actual name -- it's usually called "MacB" or "The Scottish Play." The dark superstitions that hover around this play really show its power: it's a harrowing portrait of a weak man who spirals into a personal hell of ambition, murder and madness.Shortly after a victory in battle, Macbeth and his friend Banquo are traveling home across a heath when they encounter three witches -- who greet him with "All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor! All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter!"When MacBeth is made Thane of Cawdor, he naturally begins to think that being king might be next in line. And when King Duncan visits his castle, Lady MacBeth goads her husband into murdering the king and framing a couple of innocent servants for the deed. As the witches predicted, MacBeth becomes king of Scotland. But the witches also prophesied that Banquo would be the father of kings, so MacBeth starts tying off loose ends by hiring assassins to kill Banquo and his young son, as well as a wily thane named MacDuff and all of his family. But though MacBeth believes himself to be safe from everyone, his fear begins to grow as madness and guilt torment him and his wife...One of the most fascinating things about "Macbeth" is how evil it is -- mass murder, insanity, bloody ghosts, a trio of manipulative witches pulling MacBeth's strings, and a nice if weak man who becomes a raving murderous paranoiac. Shakespeare starts the story on a dark note, and it gets darker and bloodier as the story winds on to its bleak climax. In fact, the entire story is a two-part spiral -- things get tighter and more intense, even as MacBeth and Lady M. get crazier and more violent. Shakespeare litters the story with brutally intense scenes (Banquo's ghost crashing the dinner, Lady M. trying to scrub her hands clean) and powerful dialogue ("Shake off this downy sleep, death's counterfeit,/And look on death itself! up, up, and see/The great doom's image!").The one flaw: Shakespeare's handling of the "no man born of woman" prediction is a bit lame. I mean, didn't that count as "born" back in Elizabethan times too?Honestly, MacBeth is both a fascinating and repulsive character. He starts off as a nice ordinary thane with no particular ambition, but his weakness and his wife drive him to some pretty horrible acts. Before long, he's become somebody you desperately want to see diced into little pieces. And Lady Macbeth is little better, although there's a slight disparity between her ruthless ambition and her later insanity."MacBeth" is a story filled with stormy darkness and all-consuming fire -- a powerful depiction of evil and how easily we can be seduced. Just don't say its name in the theater.

I got the global paperback version with the birds on it. It is mostly like US hardback edition except the questions in the back of the chapter is different. What I do is borrow a friends book, scan the questions with my phone, and then I'm all good to go with homework. If you can do that you'll save some money.

Text is beefed up to make it thicker, thus longer to read. Information and points should be easier to get. Its also very out of touch with modern technology used in Accounting today. A lot of this is obsolete and unrelated to real applications.

As far as accounting textbooks are concerned, I'd put Arens at the top of the heap. Unlike many other authors who are more interested in impressing you with their $50 SAT prep vocabulary, Arens is actually interested in getting the point across without bogging you down with details that aren't going to help you for the CPA anyway. However, one major difference between this version and the most current one is that this one lacks some critical statistical tables when it comes to MUS sampling (no ARIA tables), and there is a lack of explanation regarding how to calculate sampling interval in that chapter as well. Still, these are things that aren't too terribly hard to obtain if you don't want to splurge on the newer editions (which, as far as I'm concerned, is pretty pricey for a few additional fancy figures and flow charts). Despite this, it's still a rock-solid textbook which is written clearly, concisely, and competently.Edit: Wow. I cannot believe how unbelievably harsh other reviewers are about this textbook. Hard to understand and wordy? You all must not do a lot of reading, especially of other accounting textbooks (which are notoriously ridiculous). Stick to McGraw-Hill if you want to be spoon-fed scant details and high gloss pictures which have nothing to do with the text. If you actually have an interest in passing the CPA exam, you'll find Arens does a fine job of compiling information about a subject most lay people find confusing and provides problem work which lets you know pretty quickly whether or not you've solidified your understanding.

I bought this book on Amazon because it was cheaper than in my school bookstore, and although igotthe exact same edition, there are some things that are different about this book. I cannot do the end of chapter review questions because about half of them are different and the ones entiled "Becker Review" are not there at all. Also, the page numbers are off. If my professor says to look at a certain figure on a specific page, my same figure is many pagers later. This makes it difficult to participate in class and is very frustrating. Also, there are some places in the text where it refers to something on a different page, but when you go to that page, it isn't there. But in my classmates' books, it is on the page that is referenced.

Packed full of long, rambling explanations that do little to illustrate concepts or serve any real pedagogical value. Overall chapter layouts are confusing and follow no logical presentation pattern. Homework problems are okay, but difficult to answer from the poorly-written chapters. Probably about as good as it gets for an audit textbook.

Got this book for school, seemingly the "newest" edition, yet turning the cover over leads to a note saying that many errors have been introduced in this "new" edition. Great impression there, and when using the text for references, many of the in text references to other pages for figures are completely incorrect, telling me to go to a certain page and look at a figure, but the page is the section review questions. There are many typos that are distracting and it just seems like this "new" edition is another way to scam students wallets. You know College is big business when it allows mediocre texts like these to be the course's main content.

I purchased the Kindle edition of this book because I previously ordered the incorrect edition and I needed the correct edition promptly for my class.Pros:Fast DeliveryEasy to read and change the size of wordsYou can make flashcardsEasy to highlight and take notesCons:The heading color is aquamarine - it is too bright a color for reading on a bright screenThe page is blocked when searchingDifficult to find things quicklyCannot copy textOverall it is just okay because it was available when I needed it, but I would rather have a paperbook when using the book for an open book quiz.

the page numbers are different than the school issued book, but chapters, sections, and other content is the same - saved me a ton of money by purchasing this international version

Climate Changed: A Personal Journey through the Science, by Philippe Squarzoni

From Booklist

*Starred Review* French cartoonist-journalist Squarzoni, who practices his craft in the vein of Joe Sacco and Guy Delisle, digs deep into the science, economics, politics, international policies, and ethics that together force cataclysmic climate change into our very near global future. While the experts he interviews throughout this volume present accessible yet technically specific details about how we got where we are and what possible ways ahead are practical, it is by inserting himself and his personal exploration of responsibilities and choices that Squarzoni makes the most demanding call to action: we cannot address as mere individuals the inequities visited on the planet, but without recognizing our personal responsibility, we can’t address it culturally or politically in a timely manner. Squarzoni’s realistic, black-and-white art presents expressive faces, a geographic range of naturally dramatic landscapes, and the occasional succinct hyperbole, one of the most potent of which riffs on Eddie Adams’ iconic 1968 Vietnam War execution photo, here with a gas pump replacing the original handgun. The plethora of contributing experts, a detailed index, and its multifaceted exploration make this required reading for both the general public and subject specialists. --Francisca Goldsmith

Climate change is one of those problems that is so enormous, most people cannot even begin to wrap their minds around. Due to the issue’s sheer magnitude and its complex nature, climate change is a very difficult topic for common people to approach and study. Due to this, many people opt to simply ignore the problems at hand. With this in mind, Phillipe Squarzoni penned his graphic “novel” Climate Changed: A Personal Journey through the Science with the intent of making climate change an accessible and comprehensible subject. He does this by intertwining scientific dialogues with graphic images, personal anecdotes, and interesting analogies. On one level, Climate Changed provides its readers with an overload of scientific information. Squarzoni quotes myriad scientists and researchers to present the reader with all of the research he has come across which he believes is essential for the readers to know. At times, these sections of the book dragged on and felt repetitive. However, I realize that this component of the book is entirely crucial for attaining a clear sense of what climate change truly is and how much it can affect our lives. With that being said, it felt to me that these sections of the book were not necessarily incorporated well with the “graphic novel” concept. Seeing 10 panels in a row of a scientist giving his or her statement about various aspects of climate change looked boring and bland in graphic form. I would not like to see this aspect of the book cut out entirely, though I would like to see the repetitive parts (the parts about nuclear energy and social inequality in a climate-changed world felt excruciatingly long to me) trimmed down a bit, and I would have liked to see a more graphically creative way of blending these sections into the book.On the other hand, there is the “personal journey” aspect of Climate Changed. In these sections of the book, Squarzoni tells his own story of how he approached the idea of writing about climate change. In addition, he talks about the changes that he personally makes in order to help the planet (e.g. limiting himself to one flight per year) and the difficulties that arise from this self-restraint. To me, these sections of the book felt much more visceral for numerous reasons. The graphics and images of his trips to America or his comparisons to movies and novels were much more captivating than merely images of French scientists sitting at a desk and spewing out facts. Additionally, in these sections Squarzoni was able to take difficult topics and break them down to a level which anyone could easily comprehend. He used analogies to a dish being pushed over the edge of a table or a man skydiving sans parachute to really illustrate the direness of this situation. Finally, hearing one man tell of how to make a personal change just seems much more convincing than hearing a scientist present us only with statistics and facts. In the personal journey sections, Squarzoni was truly able to bring this climate change narrative to life and leave an impact on the readers. In the end, there is no definitive answer to the climate change problem. However, this book provides readers with the necessary facts in order to make informed environmentally conscious decisions in life. While I cannot say that Squarzoni or any of the scientists he quotes have convinced me to ditch my car and go live simplistically out in the woods like Henry David Thoreau, I certainly feel inspired to try to make a series of small yet positive changes in life. While Climate Changed may not have been an entirely engrossing read, I would consider it severely important for anyone who wishes to be more aware about the global climate change issue.

While this graphic novel may fail people looking for a comic book in the way most comic books are written, it truly tackles the complexity of climate change and all the nuances that are apart of it, in a fairly easy-to-read format. If you need a movie comparison, it is a little bit like Koyaanisqatsi, but narrated by Werner Herzog. If it falters, it is perhaps a little too introspective as the scientist author voices his doubts and ponders great unknowns. All in all, I appreciate it very much, and found it to be a very human look at science from a man on the inside, with all the data in front of him.I have personally recommended it to an ecologist professor who uses excerpts for some of his classes. There is a considerable amount of detail here -- it goes way beyond carbon emissions, and looks at many factors behind the rise of global temperatures, as well as the far reaching impacts climate change will have on the planet.

I had to search for this graphic book on the climate crisis. And found this gem--500 pages of exquisite drawings, distilled conversations with leading scientists in economics, climate research, energy, and political thinking. In addition the author reports and shows his personal feelings, conflicts and ambivalences as he discovers the terrible truths of our changed world. The take home message for me now, in 2015, is that we can't undo the climate changes already in place but we have to work hard and smart to keep the crisis from becoming even worse.

Climate Changed: A Personal Journey Through the Science is an extremely effective piece of work. The reader is along for the ride as Phillippe Squarzoni takes a personal journey to understand an extremely significant and inevitable natural phenomenon called climate change. He weaves details from his own life in with larger topics that are pieces of the complex web of the human effort to curb the effects of climate change. He is doing important work that is arguably as crucial as the scientific work done by professionals, which is effectively making climate change approachable and understandable to people who may find the scientific explanation confusing. The author does not come across as preachy in ways that scientists can be on occasion. He enters the topic with a purely curious and open mind state, which is something everyone should be able to appreciate. It is important to understand that climate change is not something we can ignore or forget about, and Squarzoni takes an extremely complicated idea that takes shape in numerous ways and shows us how it can and will effect us on a personal level. We do not know exactly in which ways as no one can predict the effects of the climate, but he shows us how climate change will become a part of everyday life. We are all a part of this issue, and when one begins to see real, tangible ways that it impacts our day-to-day lives, climate change becomes less of a thing to shrug off and more of a threat to our species’ existence. Even if you do not like his story or approach you still have to appreciate how effective he is at getting his point across.

This graphic text book is chock full of details about what we humans have done and continue to do to our planet. This presentation is a unique way to tell the story of the ways human activity is harming our Earth. If you do believe that the climate is and will continue to change because of human activity and you would like to help save us from disaster, please read the book. If you are a climate denier, you must read the book!

A great revealing book that explains climate change in terms my 17 Year old has understood and enjoyed

best book ever in terms of creating short cuts to address all the causes and effects of climate change and global warming

I was required to read this for a college class, no problems with the order. The book was a little overly catastrophic if you ask me, but it is climate change we're talking about..
